Brexit mega thread part 15a - looking forwards

Just rebooting the most recent thread

At the moment the UKs issues are rather over shadowed by events elsewhere
but maybe that is a good thing.

The German election on Sunday is worth watching
Right wing European politicians pulling out of CPAC speeches because they realise its not a good look
Farage floundering to stay relevant

and the possibility of the return of free movement for our kids if not us

Relations between mainland Europe and the UK remain a worthy topic for discussion

The Ukraine is neither in the EU nor in NATO. Zelensky wants funding to continue so he can continue to siphon off money for himself.

Where is the evidence that Russia wants to take over the EU?

Peregrina · 10/03/2025 09:40

Where is the evidence that Russia wants to take over the EU?

Where was the evidence that Hitler wanted to take over parts of W Europe until it happened?

Note that I don't say the UK - he quite admired the British, and with certain members of the upper classes being admirers, he might well have wanted to cut a deal with us.

The perfect outcome would be a Britain that was trading with Germany and staying out of the war.

When the US starts selling arms to Russia, you'll know where the idea came from.

In hard military terms, Britain is a pig to invade, let alone hold. It's strategic value would need to be neutralised. If anyone wondered why Russia has thousands of nukes, do some logical thinking.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 11/03/2025 10:11

@Peregrina @SerendipityJane

The EU spends more on imported gas from Russia than it gives to the Ukraine in aid. So, Russia will never run out of funds to buy weapons. Hence they will win by attrition as they did in WW2 when they thwarted Germany’s operation Barbarossa.

Never forget that Russia was an ally in defeating Nazi Germany.

@DuncinToffee

The youth mobility scheme will never happen until the EU drops the 90/180 time limit on all UK citizens. Both France and Spain are in favour of the 90/180 to be scrapped.

Peregrina · 11/03/2025 10:27

Never forget that initially Russia and Germany were allied, until Germany, (perhaps foolishly) turned on them and opened up the Eastern front.

Khrushchev was of the opinion that Russia would not have won WW2 without assistance from the US.

But hey, who needs to study history when we have Globetrotter200s potted history facts?

DuncinToffee · 11/03/2025 10:31

Never forget that Russia invaded Ukraine

Trump is making Europe great again

Donald Trump will never win the Nobel Peace prize. But he should be a strong contender for the Charlemagne prize — which is awarded each year to the person who has made the greatest contribution to European unity.

Trump is making Europe great again

The US president has provided the biggest stimulus towards European integration since the end of the cold war

@DuncinToffee

You Have forgotten the reason why Russia entered the Ukraine. It was an objection to:

Eastward expansion by the EU.
Ukraine wanting to be a NATO member.

ie. Russia did not want to be fenced in. Who would?

The war will continue as long as both sides are funded. That will please Zelensky as he will be able to siphon more billions for himself.

DuncinToffee · 12/03/2025 11:43

Russia invaded Ukraine, they could have objected without leading an invasion.

Have you forgotten about Bucha @GlobeTrotter2000 ?

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2025/mar/13/uk-food-and-drink-exports-to-the-eu-down-34-since-brexit

British food and drink exports to the EU have tumbled by more than a third since Brexit, according to new trade body figures highlighting how bureaucratic barriers have changed the relationship between the UK and its most important trading partner.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 17/03/2025 12:27

@DuncinToffee

You are getting ahead of yourself.

UK can export to the US instead as UK has not had the same tariffs applied by the US as have been applied to the EU.

Also, the period referenced in the Guardian conveniently covers the COVID years from 2020 to 2022.

https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-uk-cooperation-crisis-eu-westminister-european-commission/

Our starting point is a simple truth: European security is indivisible. The U.K. may no longer be a member of the EU, but when it comes to keeping our continent safe, Europe cannot afford to be less than the sum of our parts.

This moment of crisis demands closer UK-EU cooperation

Britain may have left the EU, but when it comes to keeping our continent safe, Europe cannot afford to be less than the sum of our parts.

@Talkinpeace

Good luck with the move to Finland. Mega cost of living and high taxes.

I will retire in Bulgaria. Second cheapest place to live in the EU and maximum tax rate is 10%.

And before remainers pile in and say it’s not possible for non-EU persons to retire in Bulgaria, you are all wrong. Only two requirements are:

Somewhere to live (already sorted in my case)
Minimum monthly income of €550

Attractions are:

Not that big a country. So, easy to go from the beaches in summer to the ski slopes in winter.

Beautiful forest and mountains scenery.

Very low immigration compared to other EU countries.

Also, Bulgaria is a net taker from the EU with €3 taken for each €1 given. So, whilst I am paying 10% tax I can laugh at; France, Germany, etc., who pay much higher taxes, but continue to become poorer as they continue to give money away to the net takers.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 18/03/2025 13:31

@DuncinToffee

Hilarious. The EU was initially ultra arrogant when the UK parliament voted leave on 29 March 2017. However, they let the cat out of the bag in December 2018 when they stated they would not object if the UK unilaterally revoked article 50.

Now they want UK help to fight a war! Not too surprised though. Of the approx 80 wars Germany has fought, they won 42. A success rate of 52%

France won 109 from 169. A success rate of 64%.

England/United Kingdom Won 210 from 230. A success rate of 91%.

No wonder the EU are grovelling.

Brexit a key factor in worst UK medicine shortages in four years, report says

Nuffield Trust says supply chains have shifted, with drugs for epilepsy and cystic fibrosis among those now scarce

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2025/mar/22/brexit-key-factor-worst-uk-drug-shortages-in-four-years

But but but …. Project fear , We are free to open our own factories and produce all our own medicines & not rely on EU big pharma. (Said 1 brexiter when impact on medicines was pointed out!)

GlobeTrotter2000 · 23/03/2025 12:19

At Dunkin’ Donuts & toldyousolittlebrat.

Please provide names and address for all those who have died in the UK solely due to lack of medicines.

As per BBC QT broadcast last Thursday, Labour’s proposed welfare cuts may force many into poverty and result in deaths. Before Labour won the last election, they estimated cuts to winter fuel allowance could result in 4,000 deaths. After they won the election, they cut the winter fuel allowance.

I have taken 5 different medicines each day since 2000. Not once have I run short.

As for Project Fear, I suggest you read the link previously provided by DunkinDonut. It provided a report prepared by Professor Mahon Anand which concluded the disasters forecast, just ny a vote to leave, by remain campaign never materialised.

I briefly saw a disgusted Express headline about "EU to freeze UK out of $500 billion defence spending".

The same Express that told us the EU had nothing to offer the UK.

Facts have changed.
