Brexit mega thread part 15a - looking forwards

Just rebooting the most recent thread

At the moment the UKs issues are rather over shadowed by events elsewhere
but maybe that is a good thing.

The German election on Sunday is worth watching
Right wing European politicians pulling out of CPAC speeches because they realise its not a good look
Farage floundering to stay relevant

and the possibility of the return of free movement for our kids if not us

Relations between mainland Europe and the UK remain a worthy topic for discussion

So as you say yourself, it's not a simple case of just rejoin.

Glad we agree on something.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 21/10/2025 19:46

I don’t think an application to rejoin will ever be made due to:

Trade deals the UK has made since leaving the EU may not be acceptable to the EU.

Almost a quarter of all UK exports are to one country, the US.

Services sector (81% of UK GDP and 83% of employment) has grown significantly since Brexit.

No conclusive proof that being an EU member reduces immigration or guarantees prosperity.

This is demonstrable nonsense

So, where is the demonstration and accompanying evidence?

I think more accurately re services the answr is, it depends.

The other question would be what might it have looked like (in terms of services) if we hadn't left. We might have had a strong financial services market as well.

How are you sure? Did you contact each of the 498 UK MPs who voted to leave the EU?

Where is the evidence that both Lithuania and Czechoslovakia will be richer than the UK five years from now?

GlobeTrotter2000 · 28/10/2025 09:05

@MaybeNotBob

As per the article you have posted, the most powerful passports are those from countries outside the EU.

Both France and Germany can visit 174 countries visa free compared to UKs 169. A difference of 5.

Countries that France and Germany can visit visa free, which UK cannot, include Iran and Iraq. How many people in the UK would want to visit either of those countries?

US passport holders can visit 168, but they are the largest economy in the world. The number of US citizens who have a passport is approx 51%.

China can visit 93, but they are the second largest economy in the world.

So, I can’t see a connection between passports and economics.

@DuncinToffee

Did Brexit cause the conflict in Ukraine? The EU expansion eastwards in an attempt to ring fence Russia was the cause.

I know this as I was working for Lukoil in 2012 to 2016. They would have invaded sooner had it not been for COVID.

Russia does not intend to invade the EU as their view is that the EU is already being invaded and will slowly die from within as money is spent on both purchase of Russian energy and supply of arms to Ukraine.

Did Brexit force people in the US to vote for Trump?

DuncinToffee · 28/10/2025 09:14

Indeed Globe, Russia interference.

Peregrina · 28/10/2025 09:41

For once Globetrotter manages to say something which makes sense - undoubtedly the expansion of the EU eastwards affected Russia. And IMHO was probably a mistake at that time, or could have been handled better. For which I think we have Tony Blair to thank.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 28/10/2025 11:46

@DuncinToffee

Where is the evidence of Russian interference? How was Russia able to control how people marked a physical ballot paper?

@Peregrina

Tony Blair’s personal target of becoming EU president was one reason for the massive expansion into Eastern Europe. Other reasons were:

German ego. They attempted to take over Europe in two world wars and failed. So, they expanded eastwards to create the illusion that they were controlling Europe economically and owned the EU

Cheap labour. This has been detrimental to both the more wealthy Western EU members and less well off Eastern European members.

Wages have come down in the Western European countries as cheaper labour can be easily sourced from Eastern Europe. The Eastern European members are losing their skilled workers.

Did you get paid to write that question Globe?

GlobeTrotter2000 · 28/10/2025 14:50

@DuncinToffee

Did you get paid to write that question Globe?

Again, the question was avoided. Maybe you did not understand what I asked. So, to rephrase.

“How can a mark made on a physical piece of paper in privacy, and placed into a box folded, be controlled externally by another country?”

Even the illusionist, David Blaine, could not pull that off.

To answer your question, I confirm that no payment is received for my posts.

It's a stupid question and people can be coerced into voting a particular way. Not physically in the ballot box, no.

Influence works differently

Do you think Russia had free elections?

Peregrina · 28/10/2025 15:43

German ego. They attempted to take over Europe in two world wars and failed. So, they expanded eastwards to create the illusion that they were controlling Europe economically and owned the EU

A very simplistic understanding. My impression is that they would always have preferred eastwards expansion, and had not wanted to go to war with the UK.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 28/10/2025 15:44

@DuncinToffee

It's a stupid question and people can be coerced into voting a particular way. Not physically in the ballot box

So, what were the coercions/influences that were allegedly used by Russia to control:

The outcome of the 2016 referendum result?
The outcome of the 2019 general election result?

Do you think Russia had free elections?

Don’t know as I am not eligible to vote in Russia. Free or not, how would that relate to Brexit?

MaybeNotBob · 28/10/2025 16:43

What's "disingenuousness" in Russian?
