Brexit mega thread part 15a - looking forwards

Just rebooting the most recent thread

At the moment the UKs issues are rather over shadowed by events elsewhere
but maybe that is a good thing.

The German election on Sunday is worth watching
Right wing European politicians pulling out of CPAC speeches because they realise its not a good look
Farage floundering to stay relevant

and the possibility of the return of free movement for our kids if not us

Relations between mainland Europe and the UK remain a worthy topic for discussion

@MaybeNotBob

Both France and Spain wanted the 90 days per 180 to be scrapped for UK persons who had bought property in those two countries. Frances attempt failed, but Spain continues to make the case.

@DuncinToffee

The Schengen guideline allows non-EU persons to be in the EU for a maximum of 90 days for every 180 rolling days. However, if you delve into the legalities, it’s actually 90 nights per 180 rolling period.

So, if a non-EU person arrives in the EU Monday and leaves Friday, that’s four nights. Do that 45 weeks per year and they will be in the EU maximum 180 days.

If someone wanted to play safer, they could be present 3 days one week and 4 days the next week and never exceed 90 days per 180.

@DuncinToffee

You are mixing legal and illegal migration.

Both Alastair Campbell and Farage agreed on the 5 December 2024 episode of Question Time that immigrants entering the UK to work was no issue. Increased longevity and a declining birth rate makes it necessary for the number of working immigrants to be increased.

Iimmigration from outside the EU has increased. Just as Farage promised He now wants to deport those with IRL, guess he changed his mind since that QT

I am not talking about refugees or the Farage boats.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 09/10/2025 20:04

@DuncinToffee

The home secretary has the right to revoke the ILR of anyone who is not a UK citizen under Section 76 of the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002.

2002 is 7 years before Article 50 was passed by the EU in 2009, 14 years before the referendum in 2016 and 18 years before UK left the EU.

So, revoke of ILR is not Brexit related.

DuncinToffee · 09/10/2025 20:07

Thanks for the information @GlobeTrotter2000 but it has nothing to do with what I posted.

Talkinpeace · 09/10/2025 20:13

One of the things I most remember from the big Brexit marches
was standing with solidly Left wing, anti establishment friends
and cheering Michael Heseltine.

The calibre of modern politicians is poor.
Sadly forcing them to give up 'external interests' has resulted in "professional politicians"
who know absolutely nothing (and care less)
about how running a business actually works.

Hezza is the last of the good ones

@DuncinToffee

Farage wants illegal immigrants to be deported. As do Conservatives and as Labour promised, but so far have not achieved.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 10/10/2025 08:50

@Talkinpeace

Heseltine left office in 2001. The World has changed a lot since then.

Peregrina · 10/10/2025 09:55

Heseltine left office in 2001.

Lord Heseltine is still an active member of our legislature.
Whether you agree or not with the current system.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 10/10/2025 20:21

House of Lords can claim £361 per day attendance (sleeping) allowance plus travel and expenses.

MaybeNotBob · 10/10/2025 20:25

Wow! That's informative...

GlobeTrotter2000 · 11/10/2025 10:48

Maybe House of Lords will be scrapped in Reforms cut government waste policy?

The Green Party leader was on BBC Question Time last Thursday. He thinks women’s breasts can be enlarged using hypnosis. Wonder how many women vote for him at the next election?

DuncinToffee · 11/10/2025 10:53

Maybe 🤔

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8der86r6n0o
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has called on the prime minister to allow him to appoint peers to the House of Lords.

Guess uneleted bureaurats aren't as much of an issue after all, Gove, Frost.....

MaybeNotBob · 11/10/2025 11:44

Note the word "hereditary" in there.

Or is reading not your forte...

GlobeTrotter2000 · 11/10/2025 13:52

Hereditary should be stopped. UK laws being determined by unelected (as opposed to uneleted) bureaucrats (as opposed to bureaurats) based on being in the right family is nepotism.

MaybeNotBob · 11/10/2025 15:26

Who is disagreeing here? Your basic comprehension seems to be lacking...

GlobeTrotter2000 · 11/10/2025 16:07

Another 100 posts and yet another mega thread will be over. Wonder when they will end?

After all there seems to no mention of another referendum or any party who wants to rejoin. So, what are the OPs of these threads looking for or hoping to achieve?

MaybeNotBob · 11/10/2025 16:57

We'll continue to point out what a disaster it has been until we eventually rejoin. Which we will. It's just a matter of how much damage we're willing to put up with until then.

MaybeNotBob · 11/10/2025 18:15

Farage: "I think you are a nutcase! You are really a nutcase! Brexit is the best thing to happen: for Russia, for America, for Germany and for democracy."

No mention of it being any good for the UK then...

DuncinToffee · 11/10/2025 18:39

His mate Nathan Gill was happy to take Russian bribes when he was an MEP

MaybeNotBob · 12/10/2025 18:08

And that's why we always trust Brexiteers!

GlobeTrotter2000 · 13/10/2025 16:24

@MaybeNotBob

There may not have been benefits for you, but you are only one person in a population of 69 million.

The ultimate proof that the majority of people don’t want to rejoin the EU has been demonstrated in the three general elections since the referendum. Remain/rejoin parties have never come close to winning any of those elections.

@DuncinToffee

Again, you have conveniently forgotten the following facts:

UK has a better trade deal with the US than the EU. An event which remain campaign said would never happen.

The regulatory requirements of the TCA applies to goods only. Services, which is 81% of UK economy and 83% of employment, are excluded.

So, for every potential 17 losers there are 83 winners. Could be a coincidence, but there are 538 elected MPs from pro Brexit parties in parliament. This is 83% of 650.

Farming is a tiny 0.56% of UK economy. However, I have yet to meet a farmer who is not well off.

UK has lower immigration than; Germany, France, Spain and Italy.

The only EU member that has a larger economy than the UK is Germany. The same as before Brexit. Germany has a larger population and a larger manufacturing sector.

If being in the EU is guaranteed to bring prosperity and wealth, why are the 27 EU members not the top 27 economies in the world?

DuncinToffee · 13/10/2025 16:46

Again, you are talking shite @GlobeTrotter2000
