Brexit MegaThread - part 14

Thread 13. We had a debate about whether there should be a new one but if no one answers this the whole series after 8 years plus will come to their end.

Brexit happened, although one time Leavers do not seem to appreciate this.
It's worth noting I think that Brexit was a Tory initiative and the Tory party has just received its worse electoral thrashing since 1832. Could it be entirely unrelated?

What next? A gradual rapprochement with the EU? A Norway style agreement?

Quite a lot of the world still bears the scars from last time Europe was "great".
Granted,Except that the European Union works to improve the lives of ALL while acknowledging there are widely different expectations and needs across the 27 countries. The thousands that have had their homes and property trashed due to innundation or fire are in need of a EUrope (if not global) plan to try to prevent repeats.
MAGA in the USA is simply a meaningless slogan for the simple thinkers as the USA as an entity has all the resources necessary for a good life for all BUT wealth and oportunity are not divided in a good manner. Speaking a common language (or two) should be an advantage for the USA but they still can't get it right.
Meanwhile the Brexiteers continue to whine and be negative towards the EU.

IItisymoi · 11/11/2024 08:43

Obviously Brexit isn't hard enough so the Brexiteers want to see blood on the streets of the UK. I am sure a hostile nation could oblige in some way.

Now I wonder what Liz Truss would have to say about the cheese issue. That it's a disgrace?

The EU would never allow it.
Single market non voting maybe
but full voting - never

GlobeTrotter2000 · 20/11/2024 09:08

@SerendipityJane

44,425 votes is not very impressive. It's less than 0.1% of registered voters.

I remember people getting excited when the petition to revoke Brexit topped 6 million, but it came to nothing. Apparently many signatures were the same people using different email addresses.

@Talkinpeace

The EU would never allow it.

Correct. It would be seen as an admission by France and Germany that the EU would be better off if its former third largest net contributor was allowed to rejoin.

I personally would only vote to rejoin it was agreed:

The UK would be a net taker like all the Eastern EU members.

UK shall be entitled to deport people to France by applying the same logic as Denmark and Germany applied when they deported all Albanians to Albania - they arrived from a safe Country, so they should return.

DuncinToffee · 20/11/2024 10:32

The UK shall be entitled to deport people to France

Which people do you have in mind?

Globe's ChatGPT hasn't realised that we used to be able to send people back to France when we were in the EU.

Oh dear...

DuncinToffee · 20/11/2024 12:09

Peregrina · 20/11/2024 17:05

Well, It would be good to deport Farage.

The EU wouldn’t want us back because we’re more trouble than we’re worth to them.
Unfortunately for us, that doesn’t work both ways..

Story on the BBC News website -
"UK wants to hire EU negotiator to 'reset' relations"

"The job posting says the role will lead the government's relationship with the European Union and negotiations with the EU "on key UK interests", with mentions of trade, security and border policy.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has committed to a “reset” of relations between the UK and EU, and previously said he would seek a better deal on trade than the one negotiated by Boris Johnson in late 2020."

Of course Starmer has also said no to a customs union or single market.

I can only wish the successful candidate, if any, the best of luck squaring that circle when it comes to trade

Loving all the folks who think that a petition will make the Government call an election when they do not need to !

Same! And who do they think would end up in government?

Peregrina · 24/11/2024 14:13

Perhaps they are hoping for a Reform Government?
They are apparently doing well at the moment.
In the past though there have been times when there were many UKIP Councillors - but they never seemed to last more than one term.

OP posts:
DuncinToffee · 24/11/2024 14:13

They want Mr Brexit, the man of the people 'residing' in Clacton

Talkinpeace · 24/11/2024 15:09

@Peregrina
THe UKIP councillors did not even last a full term in the one council where they actually took control
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanet_District_Council_elections

I find the "hard of thinking" levels around the petition quite hilarious
