Thread 13. We had a debate about whether there should be a new one but if no one answers this the whole series after 8 years plus will come to their end.

Brexit happened, although one time Leavers do not seem to appreciate this.
It's worth noting I think that Brexit was a Tory initiative and the Tory party has just received its worse electoral thrashing since 1832. Could it be entirely unrelated?

What next? A gradual rapprochement with the EU? A Norway style agreement?

Michel Barnier is certainly a bold choice given the election results. I think his party came home 4th in the legislative elections in July. Interesting times in French politics. Don't think the hard left or the hard right in Fance will like this much at all.

prettybird · 05/09/2024 16:41

He still has to win a vote of confidence (effectively "be elected") by the French Parliament, so he'll have to use all his powers of persuasion Wink

Herding the 27 countries of the EU to a consensus on the CTA, all the while dealing with BJ and Frost will seem like a piece of cake in retrospect comparison Grin

I'm wondering if that's why he was chosen! You can't claim the PM is favouring either side when denounced by both!

For once, I'm glad France is having political fireworks instead of us.

Noone happy is better than either "side" feeling unfairly treated I think

Finally the "B" word is cropping up in parliament...

The Choice of Mr Barnier is certainly interesting and possibly rather inspired as he has lived through all the arguments about EU membership with a priviliged view of all the other EU members. Of course all European countries have been and are suffering very similar issues so it will be interesting to see how things pan out. Bardella and RN have no experience and are unlikely to get any of their 'policies' accepted when you consider the ties between France and all it's neighbours and Mr Mechelon on the Left is also to idealistic for his policies to really take effect. what many countries leaders fail to convey to their electorate is the fact that in world politics they are in a straightjacket being constrained externally.

Firm but fair is the way to go. As the UK continues to try and cherrypick the response must be 'NON'. With Brexit many in Europe have had to waste time effort and money to accommodate the Brexit changes so after 5 years it is time to let the UK sink under it's own misplaced exceptionalism.

Gotta admit that was damn funny, well played 😂

Continuing to go well then;

"Make UK, the manufacturers’ trade body, said figures showed the number of products being exported to the EU had been reduced by 80%, with small- and medium-sized businesses worst hit."

Gosh, just what people on these threads have been saying would happen for years now.
What a way to wreck an economy.

HannibalHeyes · 07/09/2024 12:01

If only someone could have predicted all this...

You forget (and Louise is here to confirm) the economy and other peoples wealth and livelihoods were a price they were - and are - more than happy to pay for us to enjoy Brexit.

I expect some sort of mealy mouthed attempt to change the subject, but it's in countless posts on these threads so denial is impossible.

DuncinToffee · 07/09/2024 17:46

Good news, especially with the Grenfell Tower report in mind.

Not good news for Brexiteers who would rather people burned to death in a UK approved building than live in a European approved one. They will be fuming, if that isn't too bad taste.

DuncinToffee · 07/09/2024 18:18

I can't read the article but it will be quite an empty museum in that major city outside London

I ran an event today
One participant made various comments
his face when I pointed out that I am an economic migrant
{racist gits}

I'm not an economic migrant, but I am an EU immigrant. I love giving the xenophobe Brexiters enough rope by speaking to them in my impeccable English (and yes, it is - you can't tell) and then finding an appropriate point in the conversation to ask them whether it's me they have been talking about.

At least my late husband's Leave voting cousin has had the grace to admit that she got it badly wrong.

prettybird · 07/09/2024 20:44

I'm the child of a political refugee from an African country, who came here with the objective of studying to be a doctor. And had the temerity to come with his wife and two very young children Shock

So many people on these threads revealing themselves to be EU migrants, connected familially to the EU and/or not resident in the UK. No wonder I feel like I'm in such a minority in these threads 😳

Lets see how much backsliding Labour do.

What a nice way of saying our views don't count because we're foreign...
