It's going to be 4 years since we withdrew our membership in European Union. Apart from the passport colour (some people might prefer) can anyone name one positive change which happened since then.

Thank you for many wonderful answers. There are some interesting points in relation to AI so I have started a separate thread. You are welcome to join.

Nigel Farage is no longer paid a salary from the public purse.

Does he not get a pension from the EU?

Peregrina · 06/12/2023 19:04

Another Brexit benefit is that Lord Cameron is able to be foreign secretary for which we are all very pleased. This would not have been possible without Brexit.

I think he could have been bumped up to the Lords anyway. This sort of nonsense has been going on for decades. He is of course, unelected, but Brexiters don't seem to mind unelected people making laws for us. Is this because they are not Foreigners? Can't really have the Krauts, the Frogs and the Eyeties making laws for us now, can we? Wink

Peregrina · 06/12/2023 19:05

Good question. Now that we are no longer members, who stumps up for his pension, if he gets one?

Lookinginthemirror2 · 06/12/2023 19:10

The beginning of the end of the Tory party.

Yes you sound it. I’ll leave you to find out more on AI as you wish. There is more to a workforce than social care though as a pointer

You could hear me typing that? Freaky!

Ah, but we have left the EU, so are not paying it...

Hang on isn't Lebedev foreign, or does that not count because he doesn't contribute to making laws in the House of Lords?

The beginning of the end of the Tory party.

It does look that way, and after such a landslide victory at the last GE.

MikiSu · 06/12/2023 19:16

The government can't keep putting the blame on Brussels for all that is wrong with the country, it should now be clear to everyone now that the UK problems are the fault of the UK government and not Eu. Whilst that's not much comfort today, a small small part of me hopes that future generations will see through the crappy slogans and really start to question their elected officials going forward

verdantverdure · 06/12/2023 19:20

That's fab. There's some really positive benefits being highlighted on this thread. Pay rises are great. More money for nhs is great. The vaccine speed was great. It would be nice if remainers could acknowledge these rather than pretend it hasnt happened.

@arethereanyleftatall

The reason Remainers were Remainers is because we had a reasonable grip on the facts and didn't fall for lies like that.

backbritishfarming · 06/12/2023 19:25

can anyone name one positive change which happened since then.

Less Irish beef imports have pushed the price of British beef up. Easier market access to China/Japan etc for British beef and many other British farm produce.
I appreciate they're not benefits for you all but more specific to my family and other farmers/traders. You did ask 😬

Payrises may now be on hold, since the minister - Jenrick who promised them for those in shortage areas like nursing and social care has apparently resigned.

ShowOfHands · 06/12/2023 19:34

With the new blue passport, you can no longer renew your driving licence online using your photo on the government gateway id doodah. You have to schlep to the post office and give 17 English pounds to the slightly harassed woman behind the counter. That's all fairly neutral, perhaps edging towards irksome. However, our post office is in the Spar and they had in some nice yogurts and I bought one. It was delicious. So it's not all bad.

The same.
In a fit of inspiration proving the stopped clock theory he has realised that sending no one to Rwanda won't stop any boats.

I hate, loathe, detest Brexit. I cannot think of one benefit. My daughter works in the financial sector and lots of banks have relocated to Frankfurt. My other daughter managed to get into a very competitive course, designed to prepare students for work in the European financial markets. Guess what, the year she graduated she could not apply for European jobs: only EU Nationals … why does Starmer not make negotiating re entry into the Single Market, a key component of his manifesto! Many people who voted for Brexit are now deceased, for example my friend’s 92 year old dad.

I wondered too

HannibalHeyes · 06/12/2023 20:08

I can't work out if Jenrick has resigned because the Rwanda plan is too stupid, or because it's not stupid enough...

Are you Jenrick?

I am pretty sure he doesn't know either.

everybluesock · 06/12/2023 20:20

All the British trades people are laughing all the way to the bank (or rather not, as many still don't pay tax) as they don't have competition anymore and charge what they like.
Meanwhile everyone else misses Bogdan with his reasonable prices, good attention to detail, work ethic and good time keeping.

It showed us truly how much of the population were either racist or stupid.

Otherwise it's all been spectacularly disastrous...

I think you need to temper this with "pay rises for some may be great despite the cost of living increasing at a rate faster than the pay rises, therefore the net effect is a decline in living standards". Also add that many have lost their income entirely as their job has moved to the EU. More money for the NHS is debatable as it comes at the cost of the benefits we received from EU funding that we received due to paying in. Also, the vaccine speed was nothing to do with the EU as we could have done exactly the same as a member as the EU rules allowed is to do what we did.
