It's going to be 4 years since we withdrew our membership in European Union. Apart from the passport colour (some people might prefer) can anyone name one positive change which happened since then.

@Exasperatednow Global events will always happen. The world is unpredictable.

As per remain supporters and the UK Treasury, Brexit was certain to be a disaster and from Q32016 to Q32018 the UK (even though still in the EU during that period) UK would be trashed.

If however, youre argument is that it couldnt work because of global events and that Brexit was dependent on perfect conditions to work then it's a pretty bad idea

My point was that global events have prevented Brexit from fully happening as the World is side lined and dealing with immediate issues.

@HannibalHeyes So it's obviously sensible to notbe in your local trading bloc which happens to be the richest, and most powerful in the world

That neither US nor EU sanctions against Russia have not stopped the War in the Ukraine demonstrates they are not the most powerful.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 29/12/2023 12:37

I don;t drink wine. So, I am unable to name a shop that sells pint bottles. However, if someone wants a pint of wine, can they not pour from a regular bottle of 750ml into a 568ml pint glass?

Zonder · 29/12/2023 13:25

You need to take this up with David Cameron. He was both the UK PM and a remain supporter who made the binding commitment to every UK household

Hahaha like any Tory manifesto promise gets acted on!

Why am I not surprised that COVID is being blamed for Brexit not working.

Brexit was an idea. A belief system, full of unfalsifiable hypotheses.

It will be interesting to see which way any and all parties lean after the next election
(I suspect they will say as little as possible in the run up)

SerendipityJane · 29/12/2023 16:12

Whoa ! COVID was Brexits finest second hour surely. Remember how the rest of Europe fell to dust as untold millions died of being foreign whilst the plucky British vaccine took on all comers (especially in reality ...) to conquer the world ?

No me neither. But it seems gospel in the Boys Book of Brexit.

I love the endless convolutions of @GlobeTrotter2000 . There's a guy who pops up on Remain YouTube channels incessantly telling us how Europe is doomed. He is not as good though. Possibly the best benefit if you don't have a HGV license.

Ah, I see we're on to non-sequiturs now.

However, if Putin hadn't been so successful in undermining a sovereign democratic country with his Brexit project, may be wouldn't have felt so untouchable that he invaded Ukraine...

They will always be a reason why Brecit isn't fully happening.

I've not been on these threads for quite a while
and not in this name for ages
but the same squirrel brigade are still here

amusing !

Is 500ml the same as a pint?

I wasn't tuaght at school because the wokey eating tofus had taken over so I don't know.

It's a weak point because the Leavers made us believe that the EU was the fundamental source of all the problems wrong with the country. And the World events which you are using as your excuse now, weren't happening between 2016 and 2020.

I don't recall the Leavers getting stuck in and working towards the Brexit they wanted. I will agree that for the right wing Tories, Covid has given them a wonderful excuse to feather their own nests at our expense and maybe without Brexit, what they were up to would have been more apparent.

It is a touching notion.

@GlobeTrotter2000 how many PMs are we expecting the Tories to promise us in their manifesto if they win the next GE?

If the point was any weaker it would be Sunak.

Abhannmor · 30/12/2023 22:11

That's quite a big poll @SerendipityJane . Even so I doubt it will be a big election issue. Too many other problems. It's 'on the long finger'. But it will have to be addressed eventually.

Kendodd · 30/12/2023 22:31

You've got to wonder about the 20% of people polled who think Brexit has made it easier for the UK to trade with the EU 😂
I can think of a few posters who would believe that though. They'd have links and everything to prove trade was easier now.

There are number of posters who believe that the Tories care about women, perhaps they are related?

We all know people whose "facts" have fuck all connection to reality.

I could conduct a poll today that would return a figure of 20% blaming Jeremy Corbyn for the recent solar flares. This doesn't tell us that Jeremy Corbyn has harnessed the power of neutrinos though. It only tells us that 20% of any sample are probably at best not paying attention, and at worst a bit dim.

Also, even in Brexit la-la land, 20% is way short of a majority. Fuck 'em.
