Can someone give me one benefit of Brexit.

It's going to be 4 years since we withdrew our membership in European Union. Apart from the passport colour (some people might prefer) can anyone name one positive change which happened since then.

@TooBigForMyBoots Nobody said all Leave voters are thick and racist

I suggest you read Hannibal’s posts

the entire country changed their minds.

Watch Anna Soubry on the Northampton episode of QT in 2019. She made the statement that leave supporters don’t want a second referendum because they know people have changed their minds.

And I did point out that those who voted Leave to destabilise the country are delighted

As the vote was anonymous, how is it possible to know what their reasons were?

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/12/2023 09:33

They told me. Brexit was quite the talking point.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 18/12/2023 10:02

@TooBigForMyBoots They told me. Brexit was quite the talking point.

How many people were there in “they”. I can safely assume it did not approach 17.4 million. That so, I would refer you to the reply I made to KenDodd about the risks of trying to extrapolate the views of a small number of people to say it’s representative of the entire electorate.

Daftasabroom · 18/12/2023 12:39

@GlobeTrotter2000 extrapolate the views of a small number of people to say it’s representative of the entire electorate.

Sums up our voting system and Brexit pretty well I think. Well done.

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/12/2023 14:04

I didn't extrapolate, you only quoted part of what I said @GlobeTrotter2000. I was quite specific.🤷‍♀️

GlobeTrotter2000 · 18/12/2023 16:46

@Daftasabroom And in case you missed it. Biden quietly shelves trade pact with UK before 2024 elections.

The US is already the UK's largest trading partner. UK exports to the US are three times more than to Germany and overall UK has a surplus.

@Tulipsroses @GlobeTrotter2000

I have only actually seen one tangible benefit in this thread. That is the removal of tampon tax. Even though the EU are doing this anyway, it is what I would call a tangible benefit as it benefits all (well, all who buy them).

Any other benefits quoted have been on a very small and individual level, so don't really count in my view (e.g. Steve the builder says he's had more work. This would only be valid if the building industry as a whole agreed that their market has grown).

GlobeTrotter2000 · 18/12/2023 20:08

Could the small scale be attributed to fact that MN is pro remain as opposed to pro Brexit? Hence very few posts from leave supporters.

How many unique posters MN has is impossible to calculate. Name changes or using different emails to create multiple accounts is easy.

I remember one regular remain supporter (Peregrina I think) encouraging people to use multiple emails to sign the person for a second referendum. On a different subject, my daughter used different addresses to vote Labour in 2017 as she was at University and liked the idea of student loans being scrapped.

The most prolific remain poster I remember was Bellinisurge. They were on every Brexit thread without fail. They acknowledged they had changed names.

Had the OP presented the same question on a Pro Brexit forum (if there is one), it may well have produced a very different picture.

It is a possibility, but I think it more likely that there haven't been many / any benefits of Brexit. I have read with interest some of the evidence presented, and it does seem that the UK has not fallen off a cliff in the way some predicted. I was reading a fairly well referenced article yesterday (I'll post the link when I can) where most economists do think that Brexit has damaged the economy. Maybe a better description would be that it was a very steep hill as opposed to a cliff.

World events since have muddied the water somewhat too.

How about @GlobeTrotter2000 you supply us with a list of Brexit benefits to consider?

HannibalHeyes · 18/12/2023 20:39

But that would involve actually posting something constructive instead of trying to nit-pick on throwaway lines that others have used...

Be fair, allow @GlobeTrotter2000 the chance to provide us with one or more Brexit benefits.

Merry Christmas GIF

No. Sure even the GBN viewers, who are mostly Leave voters, regretted their vote in the GBN poll I linked to above. Daubney's face is a picture when he cops the result.🤣🤣🤣

Brexit has caused massive damage to the UK and its citizens. And no amount of gaslighting will change that.

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/12/2023 22:27

Please excuse the Christmas gif. It wasn't meant to be there.Blush

Someone else will have to summarise that long list for me. I've given up reading their replies because they end up with what they're quoting and their own response all in the same font and it gets confusing. Most people seem able to do quotes clearly.

Abhannmor · 18/12/2023 22:52

Brexit withdrawal agreement was signed four years ago. Surely if it was as successful as its proponents claim then the government would be quite popular. They would be leading in the opinion polls , for example.

The Tories won in 2019 promising to Get Brexit Done. Regardless of the wisdom of leaving the SM and CU nobody can accuse them of reneging on that promise. And here we all are.

HannibalHeyes · 18/12/2023 22:57

And the thing is, Mumsnet is not pro remain (rejoin). Maybe the majority of people who use it are, although I'm not sure about that given the number of idiots/racists I've seen on here (!).

But Mumsnet itself is certainly not. They were very complicit with the Leave campaign. People, like a certain poster on this thread, came on only to post Brexshit propaganda and daily heil links. Didn't engage in any debate about the issues involved, and tried to wind remain supporters up so that they could get them banned. Mumsnet were complicit. One poster was banned for simply stating (truthfully) that some links posted were lies. Not calling anyone a liar, just stating that things like "we will be able to trade freely with the EU", and "we will still be able to retire to the EU" after the vote, were, in fact, lies.

BitOutOfPractice · 18/12/2023 23:25

Well GB News would be about as pro brexit as you could get and they didn't seem happy in their poll.

Fuck me, for a moment I thought we would get all the way to Wednesday before this weekly thread came up.

Sums it up well. Same question over and over for 7 years which receive the same replies.

Maybe we're just living in hope that all the benefits will start showing up? Keep asking every few week, 'any brexit benefits yet?' - 'no, still none but I'm sure they'll be along, with the sunlit uplands any minute '.

Peregrina · 19/12/2023 08:39

I remember one regular remain supporter (Peregrina I think) encouraging people to use multiple emails to sign the person for a second referendum.

Then you remember completely wrongly. I have never done that and find it quite an offensive suggestion. I can't be bothered to look back, but are you the same poster who decided that I was an SNP supporter? Perhaps you should spend more time looking for these wonderful Brexit benefits, which were all going to be so easy to obtain as I recall.

On a different subject, my daughter used different addresses to vote Labour in 2017 as she was at University and liked the idea of student loans being scrapped.

If your daughter was registered to vote at her university address as well as her home address, it's perfectly legitimate to chose which address to use when voting in a General Election. Admittedly if she voted more than once she was breaking the law, so best keep quiet about that!

This is what I have found so far, I remember a specific poster too, but not yet found.
