It's going to be 4 years since we withdrew our membership in European Union. Apart from the passport colour (some people might prefer) can anyone name one positive change which happened since then.

@Zonder Thus also adding to the pile of evidence that some leave voters may not have been the brightest...

The only qualification required to vote is to be over voting age and registered. There are no pre-qualification requirements or selection criteria.

Of my relatives who voted leave, most were retired or on decent earnings for the area they live. The main reason was more money for the NHS and the EU had vastly changed since UK joined in 1973.

Of those who voted remain, most were younger with mortgages and children. They cited fear of losing their jobs, crash in property values that would create negative equity.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 16/12/2023 17:27

@Kendodd Most (not all, just most) people I know who voted Leave ARE racists and this was the only thing they cared about

Making the reasonable assumption that the total number of people know does not approach anywhere near 17.4 million. I would be surprised if the number of people you know personally exceeds 500, which is Approx. 0.0003% of 17.4 million.

Extrapolating the opinions of a small number of people to argue it represents millions of others is highly subjective. It’s the likely reason why polls are often wrong.

Racisim will have been the reason some voted leave, but I am not convinced it is a large as remain supporters think.

96waystobehappy · 16/12/2023 17:35

Yes, it pissed off really annoying people that whinge and moan about things fucking years after they happened. Brilliant outcome.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 16/12/2023 17:39

@jgw1 The confusing thing is ardent leavers like Johnson and Sunak have systematically increased migration to the UK when they have been Prime Ministers.

This comes back to what Anand Menon said on the QT episode 22 June 2023. Leave campaign was to control immigrations as opposed to reduce the total. For example, One million people who can provide services/skills that can’t be sourced locally is preferable to half a million that can’t, but have to be allowed in on the basis they are in the same union.

In the countries I have worked in outside the EU, the client/employer had to demonstrate why the same position could not be sourced locally. Seems a fair question to me.

96waystobehappy · 16/12/2023 17:41

@TooBigForMyBoots Try not to make things up to make yourself feel better. No one who voted leave is sitting round wishing they didn’t. I don’t know anyone who falls into that category. Most are thinking “Pff, should have known it wouldn’t work out like they said, it’s all a show”

Not quite sure what your response has to do with my comment. I think it's kind of obvious something is amiss if someone thinks voting for Brexit means stopping the Syrians coming over here.

@TooBigForMyBoots

How many people were polled in the links you have provided? If it was the entire UK population, it could be argued to be representative. However, if measured in thousands, I would not give them much credibility.

Polls prior to the 2016 referendum indicated a remain result. They were wrong.

For me, the only polls that count are GE and referendum results.

Cameron thought a leave vote may result in WW3. Macon thought it would destabilise the West.

Again you've quoted me and followed it with a non sequitur.

HannibalHeyes · 17/12/2023 22:41

That's what she does. It's her MO.

No honest engagement, just here to obfuscate.

@HannibalHeyes No honest engagement, just here to obfuscate.

the OP question was:

Can someone give me one benefit of Brexit

i and several others answered. However, the majority of posters immediately turned the thread into yet another:

All leave voters are thick, racist….
The entire country has changed its mind…

Those are the obfuscators.

Fuck me, for a moment I thought we would get all the way to Wednesday before this weekly thread came up.

Sums it up well. Same question over and over for 7 years which receive the same replies.

You're not answering the original question either in your responses to people. Threads often meander.

And still no answers that stand up to scrutiny, excepting Farage was out of a job as dog whilstle in chief rather taken over by a series of ever more useless Home Secretaries, and Boris got to play king of the world for a while.

How it was of benefit to the rest of us nobody knows.

To be fair, the OP only asked for one benefit, and didn't specify who it should be a benefit for. Boris being King of the world for a while was definitely a benefit for him.

Too bad there aren't such benefits for the rest of us.

A very good point, and of course he would still be king of the world if he had not been ambushed by a cake that did not know what a woman was placed by But Jeremy Corbyn in order to put a 20% tax on luxury purchases.

All while he was merely tending the pot plants.

Because most of the responses made in this thread do not relate to the OP question

Threads often meander.

In the same direction, which is to repeat the same statements made since June 2023 which are:

Referendum was advisory.
Leave campaign based on lies
All leave voters are both thick and racist

Nobody said all Leave voters are thick and racist or that the entire country changed their minds. And I did point out that those who voted Leave to destabilise the country are delighted. The ones who voted Leave because God told them are a bit confused though. And the racists are raging.Grin

GlobeTrotter2000 · 18/12/2023 09:20

At the end of the day though, the debate is futile. We had a referendum, the majority of those who voted put an x in the box to leave, so we left. That's how democracy works.

This was posted by a remain supporter who has lost their job due to Brexit, but they understand how democracy works. The same poster also acknowledged that the opportunity to cancel Brexit was presented in the 2019 GE, but remain supporters did not capitalise.

To be fair, the OP only asked for one benefit, and didn't specify who it should be a benefit for

Nor did the OP specify for how many people the one benefit should apply.

A Brexit benefit for me is that since the UK fully left the EU in January 2021, UK Citizens must follow the 90/180 Schengen guidelines for time in the Schengen zone. This, coupled to COVID demonstrated how much work can be done from home, created hybrid working.

Since January 2020, I have worked in the EU more than anywhere else. The attraction for EU companies to employ non-EU is that it allows local staff to work hybrid too on the basis of equal fairness. The French energy company I work for now has more non-EU persons than EU in both the London and Paris offices.

Companies have been able to save money on office costs too due to hybrid working.
