It's going to be 4 years since we withdrew our membership in European Union. Apart from the passport colour (some people might prefer) can anyone name one positive change which happened since then.

nobody's stupid enough to care more about the colour of a passport than the rights it gives you and doors it opens.

The only people banging on about passport colours are people like you Ken. You go on about empires, brown people coming in, EU nationals waving their passport in your face when you have to join another queue at the airport and say it's those who voted Leave who talk of nothing else.

These threads become echo chambers with the 15 or so people longing for rejoin and I get it, you're upset. You want to rejoin because your life will be so much better because...I'm not 100% sure, but for lots of Brits it's not important, not on their radar, but that is their view and they are in the majority. And then you call them stupid, thickos.

Look across to the EU countries. It is not the land of unicorns. Read the news. Dont just rely on The Guardian, although there was a pro-Brexit piece in there last week.
I always read media from both sides and foreign news as I'm not rigid in my views.

I've got news for those who say Brexit is a disaster: it isn't. That’s why rejoining is just a pipe dream | Larry Elliott

Many still hanker for how things were: but looking across the Channel, it’s completely illogical to do that, says Guardian columnist Larry Elliott

“Even now, it is really a choice between Labour and Conservative, and that is like choosing between syphilis or gonorrhoea”

@HappiestSleeping This is the best summary of British politics that I’ve seen for ages 👏😂

Peregrina · 08/12/2023 08:53

....You go on about empires, brown people coming in,......

I think you will find that the Tory Party is currently experiencing a Civil War over brown people trying to get into the country.

Peregrina · 08/12/2023 08:55

We had Larry Elliot on the other Brexit thread. He is the Guardian's tame Brexiter. They never ever open up Comments when he posts because they know that his arguments will get ripped to shreds.

In fairness to the describing people as 'thickos' comment you made, most Leave voters I know IRL are not the brightest sparks. Most are massive racists as well. One thought Pakistan was in the EU.

JollyGood777 · 08/12/2023 10:05

We'll never see another Conservative government....

There are no advantages whatsoever to Brexshit.

Come now.
We have £350million a week to spend on the NHS, bendy bananas and straight ones too and have taken control of our borders to great effect to improve the country.

Kendodd · 08/12/2023 10:12

Another one thought we could only import/export stuff to the EU and not ROW so Brexit meant we could now trade with everywhere. This was despite working in a factory exporting turbine blades China with a massive picture of the MD in China behind her desk in reception.
Another said Aldi only employ Polish people and she could get a
job in Aldi now. I have been to her local Aldi, entirely staffed be white
British looking and sounding (local accent) people.
Another said Romanians dump their rubbish straight in the
street, don't use bins. She has no Romanian neighbours and when asked, has
never met a Romanian.
Another blamed the EU for her corner shop closing down.
Oh I could go on and on and on with the Brexit stupidity and
racism I've heard over the years.

Kendodd · 08/12/2023 10:15

That last post was to @SoIf btw

Kendodd · 08/12/2023 10:32

Oh. and how could I forget, my favourite example of Brexit brilliance.
"you can't trust experts, they're all remainers"
Hmm why would that be I wonder?

I can see why you are exasperated Ken, you are surrounding yourself with fools, but fools can vote too. Plus educated people can be just as narrow minded and foolish imo.

But I see your point and can sense your hopelessness with the situation.

I bid you a good day.

All I know is that the number of viewers this year is much lower than last year, can't imagine why that is!

Pesky non smart people. Not sure you can do much about that in terms of restricting votes though

Flyhigher · 08/12/2023 12:08

Brexit is a complete success for the right wing assholes that wanted to destroy everything great about the UK and get us infighting while we turned a blind eye to their personal profiteering.

They were ideologically opposed to the collective caring contract we had as a nation and in a wider sense within the EU. Initiated by Churchill to stop any war happening ever again.

It's far from 15 people it's the vast majority now. It was a majority even then, but lots of people didn't vote. Idiots. Lots of lower paid people voted leave and lots abstained not knowing enough. That just so stupid. Find out. Learn.

WorldGlobeTrotter · 08/12/2023 13:16

Some posters on this thread think otherwise. Trades people seem to be saying they are better off.

I don't see a great deal of difference in either direction, good or bad.

Is there any evidence it's the vast majority? That even labour has said they won't campaign to rejoin the EU suggests otherwise.

Lots of lower paid people voted leave and lots abstained not knowing enough:

Scotland had the highest majority to remain (62% to 38%) and by constituency it was 100%. Is all of Scotland wealthy?

Whether or not people voted seemed to be age related with older people the most likely to vote (80%+ for over 65s and 36% for 18-24 age).

That just so stupid

Unlike some countries, it's not compulsory to vote in the UK. Even if it were, there is nothing to prevent people from spoiling the ballot paper by ticking all options.

Turnout for the referendum was 72%, The largest ever in the UK. Considering the question, I would say that was low. GE are around 66%. Also low.

I foresee a low turnout for the next GE too. People seem to be unsure who to vote for and have lost confidence in both major parties.

Flyhigher · 08/12/2023 13:40

Reports of 25% are still supporting Brexit. Means 75% against it now. Big move from 51.4. It should have had to reach 60% for a major change like this. An actual majority. It never was a majority which is why it's been so divisive.

The whole thing was about divide and conquering the UK population. Bring in chaos for personal gain. Lower paid people hadn't seen a benefit under the Tories - austerity- so they voted out as a protest vote.

Now possibly half have changed their minds, some bury their heads in the sand.

Flyhigher · 08/12/2023 13:41

I'm sure trades people are earning a little more but that's offset by the price of everything going up. Fuel everything.

Polls show an easy vote winner and yet no one will touch it

Perhaps education would help. And having some kind of body which exists to fact check politicians and hold them to account when they're telling a pack of lies. Clearly the HoC isn't able to do that, and the Speaker either can't or won't.

Not so. The largest since the 1992 general election, not the largest ever. The largest ever was 1951 at 83.9%
