Sunak is still busy making the case for rejoin this morning

Rishi Sunak says "NI has this very special position where it has access to the UK & EU markets, which makes it an incredibly attractive place to invest for businesses"

This is exactly what i mean.. and the voters will lap it up! just like Tory MPs are, they'll be no scrutiny.

Earlier my OH disagreed with me but then, on reflection said "You ve a point, we did vote for Brexit and then for Bojo"

DuncinToffee · 28/02/2023 18:29

This is quite an interesting thread on how things might develop or not for Sunak

How to assess the framework’s political significance? Right now the mood music is very good. The papers are adulatory. Johnson and ERG largely silent. Sunak can credibly claim to have achieved something his predecessors never could. His premiership was about showing not telling…

TheHateIsNotGood · 28/02/2023 20:14

Isn't anyone here at least a little bit pleased that the NI Situation is moving towards resolution?

DuncinToffee · 28/02/2023 20:17

What makes you think we aren't pleased?

TheHateIsNotGood · 28/02/2023 20:20

The tone of the posts; but if you're pleased a bit than that's good to duntoff.

pointythings · 28/02/2023 20:26

@TheHateIsNotGood I have family in NI and I'm pleased as anything for them, but the incongruity of it all is going to make my head explode. I seem to recall you being pro Brexit, so maybe you can explain why it's a good thing for NI to be in the Single Market and Customs Union, but it's a bad thing for the rest of the UK?

borntobequiet · 28/02/2023 20:34

Of course we’re pleased. I’m especially pleased because my father’s family come from NI. I can remember the roads dug up on the family farm near the border during the Troubles.

We’ve been discussing the situation re Brexit and NI since before the Referendum and our concerns were routinely trashed. We know about these things and care about them. It’s a bit rich that avowed Brexiters are now accepting plaudits for making something marginally better when it was they who fucked it up in the first place. It’s a better outcome for NI but what it emphasises is how badly the rest of the UK is faring and will fare without easy access to the European single market.

And don’t tone police us.

TheHateIsNotGood · 28/02/2023 20:42

You recall correctly pointy I did vote to leave the EU, not for the bus, xeno, dumb tory voter reasons often thought here to motivate my vote and everyone else that voted to leave the EU.

The situation for the people in NI has been awful since Brexit. The NI Protocol being the main reason. It didn't have to be that way - and blame can be placed on all sides, and a lot of disingenuous politicking, but that isn't helpful.

The good thing is that a 'deadlock' has been broken and the people of NI can now look forward and get back to their House of Democracy.

And now I bow out as I don't fancy being the live meat to feed the zoo.

But good news all round x

pointythings · 28/02/2023 20:46

Annnnd.... the squirrel swerves the question. Surprise, surprise.

DuncinToffee · 28/02/2023 20:48

So just a lecture on not celebrating enough then?

borntobequiet · 28/02/2023 20:52

and blame can be placed on all sides

A line perfected by D Trump.

countrygirl99 · 28/02/2023 20:53

We're mostly delighted for NI. We just wish the whole of the UK could have the same access to a massive market.

Chevyimpala67 · 28/02/2023 20:58

Maybe we should start a campaign to join NI...?

Have the DUP accepted it then?

Btw, I agree, lucky NI what a shame the rest of the UK can't have the same deal.

Unless TheHateIs actually lives in NI I don't think her opinion is worth anything. Do we have any NI posters on the thread who can tell us how it really is?

As for where the blame lies - fairly and squarely on Boris Johnson's shoulders and his fellow travellers like Rees-Mogg.

Exasperatednow · 28/02/2023 22:17

Peregrina I have family in NI. The only awfulness wasn't the protocol, it was the lack of governing. However, I'm not convinced that the DUP will ever work constructively with anyone.

SerendipityJane · 01/03/2023 08:47

So with the smoke clearing, the question is who is NIs guardian angel ?

Because there is no way on Gods Green Earth that Rishi Sunak has done anymore here than take some very sage advice from people who know what they are doing, and how to manipulate him.

Maybe they've been there all the while. Obviously they could never have pulled this off with Boris - whose signature dish is incompetence. But with someone who hasn't quite flagged up his capabilities, they could just pull it off with Sunak.

Either way it seems the ERG have been contained, and the DUP boxed into a corner.

I suspect that if this deal doesn't cut the DUPs mustard (and anyway you spread mustard ...) then a referendum across NI will be the response. That'd be fun for them.

Or am I too cynical, and just need to accept that Sunak - alleged Brexiteer - did this all on his lonesome ? Maybe he never was a Brexiteer. Just someone who knew he had to go deep into their camp to bring them down from the inside ?

On a related note, I saw a comment recently from someone who wanted Humza Yousaf to become FM, as the sight of an Indian and a Pakistani discussing the partition of Britain would be just too much cosmic irony,

Peregrina · 01/03/2023 08:57

I am sure that Sunak was a Brexiter but probably not a dogmatic head banger and he can see the way the land is lying.

RafaistheKingofClay · 01/03/2023 09:02

The only blame lies with those that engineered Brexit and those that engineered a Brexit that involved leaving the single market and customs union without caring that it was completely incomparable with the Good Friday Agreement. Or caring what the people of NI wanted and just imposing it on them. You can’t put the blame for this on all sides. It lies very firmly with the ultra brexiteers.

SerendipityJane · 01/03/2023 09:27

And bought the mass of the media estate with him ?

Sorry, this is all pantomime. Something else is moving behind the scenes.

The same someone who wrote his speech extolling the benefits of being in the SM?
