Brexit

Genuine question - what does anyone like about Brexit?

I have always been a committed remainer - I work in an industry that depends on seamless logisitics, particularly entering / leaving the UK. Brexit is a shit show for my sector.

Just had to pay £96.80 to UPS to release a package that I'd paid express delivery for, that should've arrived 2 days ago - I'm pissed off. The German firm has already agreed to reimburse me but it's all such a ball ache.

So I have a very bleak outlook when it comes to Brexit.

Genuinely, I would like to hear of good news stories around Brexit.
How has it made your life better?
If your pay has increased - how much by and which industry are you in?
If there has been a legal upside for you - which law and how has it helped?

I am genuinely hoping to 'reframe' my thoughts / feelings on Brexit and was hoping this board could help me

Reluctantly, I have to admit I do prefer the navy blue of my new passport (but still hate why it has changed colour)

I know UK voters voted to exit the EU by 51.9% to 48.11%.
But Norway and Switzerland are not members either.
I wonder why ?
What are their border patrols like ?

Peregrina · 28/01/2024 11:08

Norway sends men with sniffer dogs onto the trains from Sweden. The Russian border is observed by "Schengen huts" from the Norwegian side.

I have no idea what happens with Switzerland.

Article about Norway-Sweden border

Frictionless borders: learning from Norway https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-41412561

NB: it talks about the importance of collaboration and mentions the right of each country's police force to operate up to 16km into the other's territory, neuter if which I can see being likely/acceptable with current UK attitudes Hmm

@SilverBranchGoldenPears I am pleased for you. That's a lovely outcome. Was it easy becoming a dual-national?

It’s an Irish one so not hard at all, just time and money. But in 6 months I’ll have been in the EU long enough to get a German passport so that’s exciting!

What do you do in Germany? Did you speak German when you first arrived there?

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 28/01/2024 21:50

Not a word when I first arrived. I work in a tech company.

@SilverBranchGoldenPears please could you adopt me and my family?

Hardly objective.

Who? The BBC?

Peregrina · 30/01/2024 10:09

Some intelligent people seem not to realise that Brexit has happened.

The contestants on University Challenge last night were asked which two countries were both in the EU and the Commonwealth. One team said the UK and Malta, and the other team said the UK and Cyprus. The answer being of course Cyprus and Malta.

yes- the BBC.

They showed facts, not sure what is wrong with that.

It took them long enough, I give you that.

But they didn't- they said 'the price will go up'. Hardly a fact.

You typed "hardly" when you meant to type "exactly". Maybe your autocorrect is on the fritz ?

If not a fact, then what is it?

A consequence?
A lie called out?

sigh....it's not a fact until it actually happens. Jesus.

So are you saying that report on Newsnight about checks coming in and consequences wasn't true?
Please don't tell me you STILL believe Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg on Brexit?

DuncinToffee · 31/01/2024 08:54

Andrea Leadsome to Kay Burley

businesses need to "adapt" to leaving the EU single market and the rising cost of checks on food and plant imports as a result of Brexit.

Can anyone remember when the Leave campaign warned voters about this?

Peregrina · 31/01/2024 10:10

Can anyone remember when the Leave campaign warned voters about this?

I certainly remember easiest trade deals, not, trade deals with more friction.

Who knows most about it - those business leaders who actually have to see that the paperwork is done, or an out of touch MP?

Sovereignty, controlling our borders, better trade deals from literally the other side of the world. Who I wonder is Leasdom trying to kid?
