Brexit

Genuine question - what does anyone like about Brexit?

Pipsquiggle · 11/11/2022 18:32

I have always been a committed remainer - I work in an industry that depends on seamless logisitics, particularly entering / leaving the UK. Brexit is a shit show for my sector.

Just had to pay £96.80 to UPS to release a package that I'd paid express delivery for, that should've arrived 2 days ago - I'm pissed off. The German firm has already agreed to reimburse me but it's all such a ball ache.

So I have a very bleak outlook when it comes to Brexit.

Genuinely, I would like to hear of good news stories around Brexit.
How has it made your life better?
If your pay has increased - how much by and which industry are you in?
If there has been a legal upside for you - which law and how has it helped?

I am genuinely hoping to 'reframe' my thoughts / feelings on Brexit and was hoping this board could help me

Sovereignty isn’t nothing.

Why do you think it doesn’t matter?

What is it? How does it change with Brexit?

jgw1 · 11/11/2022 19:17

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 11/11/2022 19:16

Nope. Can’t think of a single positive.

Oh come on. Those with the most money have got much richer since Brexit, which is a great thing for all of us to see our wealth flood up to them.

Lonelycrab · 11/11/2022 19:18

Sovereignty isn’t nothing

Sovereignty, in inverted comma’s, is a poorly understood concept. Unless you want to live in absolute isolation from the entire planet, and then it’s very simple.

I've just had my passport renewed and the new one has a lovely dark blue cover. Makes it all worth while Hmm

My DS got his and argued it was black, not blue. It is such a dark blue that it looks black to someone who doesn't know it's supposed to be blue. So we can't even really get that right.

jgw1 · 11/11/2022 19:31

One of the greatest advantages of Brexit is that I can feel smug that I was right. It is indeed a terrible idea.

DuncinToffee · 11/11/2022 19:32

The £350m extra per week for the NHS? Would do nicely paying for nurses wages.

Busses don't lie do they?

Brown sea water?

Like priests' socks.

I think you need to reframe the question. I don’t think brexiteers thought brexit would be amazing, I think they worried about what remaining in the EU would mean. However given we left and covid, the European Union’s mission isn’t what is was once going to be, but I don’t blame people for not liking the outlook.

GoodOnPaper · 11/11/2022 19:50

Whoever it was up-thread who mentioned about the tampon tax - we didn't need to leave Europe to abolish the tampon tax so even that can't be counted as a benefit I'm afraid....

ChocolatSouris · 11/11/2022 19:52

The EU’s mission is exactly as it always was, stronger together, peace in Europe, human rights etc.

When I read Brexiteers posts on here, I think sod you, we have EU passports and you don’t, my dc have opportunities in Europe and yours don’t.

Sorry for those who voted remain and do not have options.

Iammatrix · 11/11/2022 19:52

Just a question? Slate me!

Brexit overnight was never a thing.

If there is to be any benefit of Brexit, did anyone really expect it to manifest overnight?

Leavers and remainers.

I actually voted to remain.

I was a child in the 70s, a shit time.

Passport stamps is the only one.

Not for me. We got a stamp on the way to France and they didn't stamp me on the way back and only realised once we got home. Whilst I'm hoping we will be fine it's another new stress for travelling abroad next time!

Sovereignty isn’t nothing.

Why do you think it doesn’t matter?

Perhaps because we always were a sovereign nation? It was a jingoistic con.

Trolltrotters · 11/11/2022 20:18

Ummmm, some medicines that were previously prescription only (I think POP and a rather good antihistamine) are now over the counter.

Just that. That's all I can think of. Makes it all worth while right!?

Whippet · 11/11/2022 20:18

Nothing positive for me I'm afraid. Brexit meant I couldn't finish the third year of the degree I was doing via distance learning at a European university for FREE.
Now if I want to complete it I have to transfer the credits to the OU for a general 'Open' degree and pay £7,000 for the final year, or finish it at the uni I started at in Europe and pay as an international student (about £12,000).

@hamstersarse

How has the 'new' sovereignty benefitted you?

I always suspected the sovereignty phrase was an empty trope, however, if it has benefited you please let me know how.

I really did want some good Brexit examples

Well, 50 years perhaps, apparently.

But the way you frame that question makes me think… what are you expecting to “manifest” exactly? Poof- there comes some unicorn or something?

The only thing you’ll manifest from isolation is basically being poorer. As we’re all finding out.

Ablababla · 11/11/2022 20:28

And yet they are still here….

Pipsquiggle · 11/11/2022 20:35

oldbrownjug · 11/11/2022 19:14

I'm guessing OP didn't start the thread to discuss the benefits of Brexit.

@oldbrownjug

I honestly would like to know how people are benefitting from Brexit.

I am bored of going into work everyday and seeing what a shit show it is. Everything is so much more expensive which being passed on to the customer. It is honestly depressing. Hence my post

'Unicorns' will not 'manifest' from Brexit, certainly.

I can't answer OPs question. But I do have the right to comment as do we all.

What would the world look like if we weren't going through a pandemic?

What would the world look like if Russia hadn't invaded Ukraine?

What would the world look like if we weren't controlled be a patriarchal system?

What would the world look like if we didn't burn fossil fuels?

Non of us voted for a European war, non of us voted for a pandemic, etc, etc, etc ....we think.

SharpLily · 11/11/2022 20:44

I too am genuinely interested to know the upsides and I admit this is mainly because I only see the downsides - mostly because of how it affects me personally. I wasn't eligible to vote but I would have voted remain for its benefits to me personally rather than any wider political or societal beliefs however I'd like to think I could appreciate a wider viewpoint and would like to hear an unbiased, factually correct scenario in favour of Brexit.

I also admit that among the people I know, racism and general stupidity were largely the admitted motives for voting leave. I have heard that more intelligent people had better and more valid reasons but no-one has yet given me an explanation of what they are and I would be interested to know if they have worked out. Someone I vaguely know and admire voted leave for financial reasons and my experience is that he knows what he's talking about but I haven't seen him lately to hear the result. Is anyone here actually enjoying a financial benefit specifically from Brexit? Apart from dark blue passport manufacturers, obviously.

R4 PM tonight, unequivocally Brexit has not helped, we are bottom of the G7 in our economic recovery to pre pandemic level. I can't even be bothered to show an atom of smugness as it's all too sad and predictable.

Yes we all have the right to comment

But you asked for your argument to be slated.

There are many factors that obscure the effects of Brexit. They’re being milked as an excuse, and it’s a handy smokescreen.

The positive effects of Brexit will be reaped by a tiny minority, while the rest of the entire country stagnates and goes downwards.

jgw1 · 11/11/2022 21:01

The main benefits and aims of Brexit were stopping the internal infighting in the Tory party and ensuring Boris Johnson became Prime Minister. Both have been successfully achieved.
