Brexit

Genuine question - what does anyone like about Brexit?

Pipsquiggle · 11/11/2022 18:32

I have always been a committed remainer - I work in an industry that depends on seamless logisitics, particularly entering / leaving the UK. Brexit is a shit show for my sector.

Just had to pay £96.80 to UPS to release a package that I'd paid express delivery for, that should've arrived 2 days ago - I'm pissed off. The German firm has already agreed to reimburse me but it's all such a ball ache.

So I have a very bleak outlook when it comes to Brexit.

Genuinely, I would like to hear of good news stories around Brexit.
How has it made your life better?
If your pay has increased - how much by and which industry are you in?
If there has been a legal upside for you - which law and how has it helped?

I am genuinely hoping to 'reframe' my thoughts / feelings on Brexit and was hoping this board could help me

@GlobeTrotter2000

Just leaving the latest YouGov Brexit tracker here

It's now 55% remain, 31% leave.

Booked a business trip to Ireland today - still annoys me that it's going to take bloody ages at passport control to get in

Yougov would say that, they are owned by a well known remainer.

@jgw1

YouGov use industry standard research methodologies. To this end, who 'owns' it is immaterial.

Please feel free to signpost me to any trended analysis Brexit surveys owned by a 'leave' supporter that shows that the majority of people still want to leave .............. Oh wait,............ There isn't one.

The ports of Dublin Rosslare and Cork are booming with direct sailings to Cherbourg , Roscoff , Calais , Rotterdam.

Unless you are talking about cargo....

Rotterdam or anywhere in The Netherlands has no direct passenger sailings to Ireland. You have to go either through England, Wales, Scotland or France.

You can check Rome2Rio.

Are these councils going bankrupt left right and centre anything to do with Brexit? I assume they lost a lot of EU money?

I saw this on x yesterday https://twitter.com/Aiannucci/status/1746811804817281240?t=o4Dr_5rarXJXe5bc5hIZiQ&s=19

A bit like Brexit, looks like councils going bust is entirely of the Tories making.

Nadhim Zahawi MP: Why I have decided to vote for Britain to leave the EU | Conservative Home

I believe that a change in our relationship with Europe could provide a fantastic opportunity to achieve this greater Britain we all want to see.

I found a Brexit benefit!
my friends got married*

*So that one could take a sizeable research grant that pre-brexit could have been taken in this country back to their own EU country, after a decade or so of living here, and that the other one could follow them without problem to that country (taking some highly specialised technical knowledge with them).

Pipsquiggle · 17/01/2024 06:51

@jgw1 Eh? What's your point?

I did know Zahawi founded YouGov, I didn't know how he voted in Brexit. He voted Leave.

I don't understand how you think posting an article from 2016 on Zahawi explaining why he voted Leave is the 'zinger' you believe it is.

Still waiting on any trended analysis from anyone that shows most people still want to leave

@Pipsquiggle Just leaving the latest YouGov Brexit tracker here. It's now 55% remain, 31% leave.

Does YouGov poll all registered voters, Approx 46.5 milion?

Never forget that polls over the period 2013 to 2016 favoured remain by a 2:1 ratio if differences of 4% or less were ignored. This has been explained in detail on another thread.

The UK has already left the EU with regards to the CU and SM.

Labour have stated they will nto campaign to rejoin the EU in the forth coming general election. Likewise Ed Davey of the LibDems said rejoining the EU is off the table as people are more converne about other issues.

QT last week as an audience who were undecided about who to vore for in the next GE. No comments made about the EU.

@GlobeTrotter2000 no research agencies poll 46 million people, they use representative sample sizes

Yep got my wording wrong.

Should have said a survey showing we were happy that we left the EU

Does anyone remember the only Brexit Arms threads?
I don't see any of those posters anymore, I wonder what happened to them?

GlobeTrotter2000 · 17/01/2024 14:47

@Pipsquiggle no research agencies poll 46 million people, they use representative sample sizes.

Sample sizes seem to be around 2,000. No way can 2,000 be extrapolated to reflect 46.5 million. If it could, why bother with elections or referendums?

Conduct a poll of 2,000, then say to the other 46,498,000:

The next Party to be in power is.......The outcome of a referendum would have been.....

We don't need your opinion as 2,000 others have decided for you.

Do you think that system would ever be accepted?

Is your basic point that you don't believe so many people are unhappy about Brexit?

I heard a joke today that reminds me of that a bit.

How many Brexit voters does it take to change a lightbulb?
None.
They'll all sit around in the dark and claim the light's working ! 😁

GlobeTrotter2000 · 17/01/2024 16:15

@Kendodd Is your basic point that you don't believe so many people are unhappy about Brexit?

Some are unhappy, but I am not convinced it is as many as others think.

Last week's Question Time episode was with an audience made up solely of people that don't know who to vote for at the next General Election. EU was not mentioned.

I remember the Brexit Arms thread. The regulars were:

BearBehind - Pro remain
Bellinisurge (who always fought with Bear) - Pro remain

Copper - Pro leave
Mummy - Pro leave

@GlobeTrotter2000 do you know how research surveys work?

I am not a researcher but have worked in research teams. There are clear and stated methodologies that are used in the industry and codes of practice.

Trended surveys over time tend to be the most accurate. Research agencies absolutely do take sample sizes of the population and extrapolate out.

Not sure what your issue is.

OP posts:
GlobeTrotter2000 · 17/01/2024 16:23

@Pipsquiggle Not sure what your issue is.

It failed to forecast a Leave result in 2016.

Maybe the people who were undecided at the time of the polls voted for leave in actual referendum 23 June 2016?
