Brexit

Genuine question - what does anyone like about Brexit?

Pipsquiggle · 11/11/2022 18:32

I have always been a committed remainer - I work in an industry that depends on seamless logisitics, particularly entering / leaving the UK. Brexit is a shit show for my sector.

Just had to pay £96.80 to UPS to release a package that I'd paid express delivery for, that should've arrived 2 days ago - I'm pissed off. The German firm has already agreed to reimburse me but it's all such a ball ache.

So I have a very bleak outlook when it comes to Brexit.

Genuinely, I would like to hear of good news stories around Brexit.
How has it made your life better?
If your pay has increased - how much by and which industry are you in?
If there has been a legal upside for you - which law and how has it helped?

I am genuinely hoping to 'reframe' my thoughts / feelings on Brexit and was hoping this board could help me

The problem is that we no longer have the calibre of politician who can make it work.

it is quite normal for people to want to run their own affairs though, many countries seem to be able to run their affairs competently without needing to be controlled by a colonialist overlord.

Are you making an arguement for Scottish independence?

@Needlesandsafetypins We had a referendum to join the EC the UK joined the EC, I think your argument is saying that since it happened those who didn't like that should just get over it and put up with the many benefits of being a member of a community of nations that work and trade closely with each other?

Brefugee · 07/03/2023 08:42

Brexit happened, just get over it people.

that wasn't the question though. It is difficult to get over something that, for some people, completely turned their life upside down and caused great distress and expense.

For me? Good thing: i can finally vote where i live because i had to get dual citizenship.

@Needlesandsafetypins
I posted this query last November, I can't control when people choose to answer.

Anyway, you haven't answered my question - how has Brexit benefitted you?

I am still having a shit time - particularly over the last few weeks with produce / salad availability being shocking. Yes poor weather related but also Brexit.

When you haven't got enough stock to give to all your customers - who would you prioritise? The largest market that has minimal red tape to deliver to or a relatively tiny market that has a shit load of red tape and your stock will probably go mouldy in the truck due to all the waiting time?

So which comes first, joining the Single Market or the Customs Union. When only voted on the EU not the SM or the CU.

And yet (as predicted, there is a pattern here) Brexit is still making headlines. And will continue to do so for many years. Getting in the way of everything else you might want the government to look at.

It wasn't necessarily a reason to vote to stay in the EU. However the fucktonne of legislative and regulatory work that leaving required (which, by the way, the UK hasn't even started yet) was correctly flagged as taking up years of government time.

And when that prediction was made, it was assumed we would have a vaguely competent government. Not the shitshow of lowest common denominators we have arrived at.

The irony is, "Brexit" will probably outlive a lot of the people who voted for it. If I were a 20-something, that would colour my opinion of the society I live in and might lead to some novel politics.

Time, will tell.

Brexit is still limping along ballsing up the country as it does. Once the shambolic fuck up stops fucking things up, people might stop talking about it.🤷‍♀️

Hoppinggreen · 07/03/2023 10:30

I hate Brexit
However,I love skipping past the large queue of non EU passport holders when entering or leaving an EU country due to DH and the DC having EU passports and me being allowed through with them.
We flew to Spain at half term and arrived around the same time as 2 other planes from The UK. Passport Queue was huge while we were waved straight through.

I would happily queue though if it meant we were EU members again

Grantanow · 07/03/2023 10:53

Brexit remains a colossal mistake as evidenced by Sunak telling NI that they have the best of both worlds - access to both the UK and EU markets, which we all had before Brexit. It will take years to catch up with what we had and flag-waving sovereignty does not cut any ice with trade and economics. All in the interests of BoJo becoming PM and his backbench, knuckle-dragging supporters.

Grantanow · 07/03/2023 10:54

And I don't like anything about Brexit.

SerendipityJane · 07/03/2023 11:13

Actually, that quote has been taken out of context. What Sunak meant was that NI is lucky to have Brexit and the DUP.

We are all lucky to live in a world in which the DUP can exist.

We are all lucky to live in a world in which the DUP can exist.

there's an article in the Belfast Telegraph yesterday with a head and strapline that the DUP have been so badly stung by the Brexit they backed, the only remaining option is a time machine back to 2016.

@Pipsquiggle Anyway, you haven't answered my question - how has Brexit benefitted you?

Why do you want to know?

Anyone who answers these types of threads positively is subjected to outpourings of bile from the Lefties.

I'm doing fine with Brexit and it's working for me.🙂

@Needlesandsafetypins

Have you actually read my OP and then my responses to other posters?

Where have I been rude/ spewing bile ?

I do get irritated by people who say Brexit is 'fine' yet can't give their own examples & /or deny the detrimental effect on lots of industries - including mine.

From this thread basically drivers and builders are doing way better now due to Brexit - are you a driver or a builder?

  1. We don’t the the disgusting debacle of Anne Widdecombe and the UKIP MEPs turning their backs to “Ode to Joy” on TV.
  2. Blue Passports
  3. We can ship Whiskey to Saudi Arabia and proper British sausages to Pakistan
  4. We don’t have to call them British Offal Tubes anymore so the mixture of sawdust, sweepings off the abattoir floor, sewage water and stale bread in chemical casings can now be Called the “Great British Banger”
  5. We don’t have to season our food or have any flavour like these Europeans
  6. Poor welfare, Growth hormone and antibiotic injected beef can now flood in from Australia, ensuring our farmers are undercut allowing food manufacturers to make a greater profit
  7. We can pump sewage into our waterways without having EU standards to adhere to, ensuring that we can exceed our much lower UK standards
  8. We can now go back to shillings, pence, inches, furlongs, yards, groats and bushels so we can trade with the world
  9. We can lower worker’s rights and welfare, undercutting the EU for wages
  10. we can have bendy bananas

I could think of hundreds.

If you really want just a single benefit, we were able to abolish tampon tax - but I suspect you don't just want a single benefit and will now argue why that isn't enough to justify it etc etc...

They could have done that anyway. That was another lie

Ummmm, some medicines that were previously prescription only (I think POP and a rather good antihistamine) are now over the counter.

Just that. That's all I can think of. Makes it all worth while right!?

They always were. That's also nothing to do with brexit

😂😂😂

It was all worth it then.
And I have actually had people, in real life, arguing that the 'freedom' to swim in shit filled seas is a benefit for us.
