Part 10 of our long running thread.

Not sure what to say, really, other than it is worse than I feared.

Strap in, folks. It's gonna be a rough ride...

UK car production collapses to lowest for 66 years
www.bbc.com/news/business-64399748

A relevant bit from the BBC story:
"Firms are worried that the UK is falling behind the US and the EU when it comes to offering state aid to manufacturers.

A very significant bit of US legislation - the Inflation Reduction Act - will offer billions in subsidies to car makers who create electric vehicle supply chains in the US.

Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT [Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders], said this will "hoover up" a lot of international investment.

An angry EU is considering retaliating by either explicitly relaxing state aid rules or doing so under the guise of extending Covid recovery or green technology-boosting programmes.

One of the benefits of Brexit was meant to be escaping from the straitjacket of EU state aid rules which limited the amount of support governments could give to favoured industries.

Mr Hawes conceded the UK could be in the unenviable position of offering less support to crucial industries than we did before we left the EU."

DuncinToffee · 26/01/2023 08:46

Minford in 2012 said this would happen and welcomed it.

He claimed that there would be more “gainers than losers” because cheaper imported cars would flood into the U.K. He agreed this would all but destroy U.K. car manufacturing

www.forbes.com/sites/carltonreid/2019/01/28/brexit-to-destroy-u-k-car-manufacturing-lead-to-cheaper-imported-cars-increase-traffic-congestion/amp/

This is what they voted for.

DuncinToffee · 26/01/2023 08:58

This could be an actual benefit

The UK's new farm subsidy systems are the one genuine benefit of Brexit - and, bizarrely, the one that no major Leave politician would discuss before the vote. If the UK gets this right, they could be used as a template for reform across the EU, whose system is a totaI disaster.

Do you remember Brexiteers describing Brexit as a process? I thought it was "done".

It suits both Labour and the Tories (not the British public of course, we have already been told to fuck ourselves seveN ways sideways since 2016) to push a narrative of Brexit as a process - like climate change. A permacrisis is political manna from heaven when it comes to bashing your opponents.
The next election will be fought along the lines of "make Brexit work".

We have always been at war with Eurasia

BBC R4 's lunch time news on UK vs EU vs USA for microchip manufacture and Green tech... an interview with a founder of ARM...

Eu 43bn, UK 50bn on chip development... UK £0.. no strategy & Similar with Green.

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at what we have done to ourselves, not the Brexit voters but our politicians, who should have known better but used the destruction of UK plc for their own ambition & even now, when we know what brexit is doing, the main parties have their heads in the sand.

It could have been. Unfortunately, there's unlikely to be much of a farming industry left, thanks to Brexshit.

And I don't think it's going to compensate for letting the water companies constantly pump raw sewage into our waterway either...

A little humour from Reddit wrt the Telegraph article linked upthread:

Edited

Huh.

Breturn? Brentrance? Brethink? Bronsecondthoughtletsnotbestupid?

Bregret?

BRB ?

Brexexit

Brethink is actually a cool one (bregret in the answers is also funny)

Brejoin

broomerang

Breturn

I like Breturn because it sounds like a guy with a weird accent trying to say Britain

EU-turn

none of these work
Neither did Brexit

Do we need another portmanteau? I’d rather call it “Britain finally realises Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson and Michael Gove are totally full of shit and decides to reverse its historic mistake” or BFRNFBJAMGATFOSADTRIHM which we can all agree is far more catchy than Brethink.

The Brodigal Son

Brejoin has been my goto.

Bromance

Brentry?

I believe they'll have to change the name to "We're Very, Very Sorry Land" for starters

Brenter

Breck off

Breunion (((Boys)))

Supercalifragilisticbrexitwasatrocious

Brenter

Boris told us he got Brexit done and he never lies.

I know a woman who says stuff like that entirely without irony. God help out country

quiteathome · 26/01/2023 18:17

Would they let us back in do you think? Or do you think someone would veto it

I'm absolutely certain more than one country would veto us Sad

Wouldn't even necessarily be the French this time Hmm

Why would any EU country trust the UK? Confused We've explicitly stated that not all international laws apply to us and have proven ourselves to be entirely untrustworthy with regard to international agreements that we sign of our own free accord Angry

countrygirl99 · 26/01/2023 18:34

I know Kier Starmer is criticisedfor hos stance but tbh I can't see any point in saying your going to do anything other than make the best of the situation. I can't see us being welcomed back for a long time. Breaks my heart but we need to be realistic.

We would need a complete change of Govt, all parties signed up to rejoin and at least 70% support among the public.
The UK is still (atm just) a strong military power, we ve a nuclear deterrent and have a decent GDP, our Universities are well regarded, we still have the life sciences, financial services and London is still a great place for theatre culture etc...

However, if we piss about and wait 10 or 15 years, how much of this will still be the case?

But.. i m late 50s, i do not think we will rejoin in my life time, i think there is a large % of the pop. and the tory party that would see the country become a failed state than admit they got it wrong.

Lightening the mood, my DD who is an OT said to me tonight "the only good Tory is a SupposiTory"

prettybird · 26/01/2023 19:48

I still retain hope that an independent Scotland will be able to join the EU - or at the very least, EFTA/the Single Market Grin

We did tell the EU to "keep the light on" Wink

But it's going to mean major problems with a land border with England Sad ....at least it's only 96 miles long and one of the oldest borders in the world, unlike the concocted Northern Irish border which is over 300 miles long Smile

So it's not going to be that simple Hmm

HannibalHeyes · 27/01/2023 08:15

So car manufacturing in the UK was rising up until 2016?

I wonder what could have happened in that year to cause it to tumble...

borntobequiet · 27/01/2023 08:23

It’s a mystery, isn’t it?

Chersfrozenface · 27/01/2023 09:27

I saw Simon Jack's item on the 6 o'clock news about this. He showed a line graph of those figures and definitely mentioned that 2016 was the year of the Brexit vote.

DuncinToffee · 27/01/2023 10:05

And right on cue there is Hunt telling us a story about unicorns.

prettybird · 27/01/2023 10:31

He truly is gaslighting us. Angry

Telling us that the stats are lying and that it's our fault for seeing the decline that it is happening Confused

HannibalHeyes · 27/01/2023 12:21

Is that like when we just didn't BeLeave enough?

SerendipityJane · 28/01/2023 09:53

I see Shell may be pulling out of the UK. Not quite sure how the Express will spin that.

Obviously they're lining up for a massive handout a la Nissan. I imagine a lot of big internation firms have suddenly realised they can blackmail the government into huge payouts to prevent them leaving (or even just talking about leaving) the UK.

I wonder if Tim Martin will announce he's pulling out of the UK and moving all the 'spoons pubs abroad.
