Part 10 of our long running thread.

Not sure what to say, really, other than it is worse than I feared.

Strap in, folks. It's gonna be a rough ride...

Also, is it just me or is the current situation 100 times worse than the "winter of discontent" of 1978-9 ? Yet "mysteriously" no media outlet has seen fit to point that out. All the more incredible given it's collective obsession with nostalgia. After all, it's really the ultimate in Christmas repeats.

Although as far as I know bodies aren't going unburied.

Yet.

Thatsasmashingblouseyouvegoton · 16/12/2022 18:17

Feels very bleak indeed

quiteathome · 16/12/2022 19:00

I have been busy working but even so not heard anything about by elections. (Do half listen to R4 in and back.)

The media is trying to turn on the nurses and NHS staff from what I can work out.

DuncinToffee · 16/12/2022 19:25

Just caught this BBC South news

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-63984360
The number of people arriving at a UK port from France has more than halved after Brexit, a ferry firm has said

Brittany Ferries said many French visitors had switched to its sailings to Ireland.

Peregrina · 16/12/2022 20:24

I expect that's because people are much more likely to be cremated these days. But if it were a Labour Government, they would find some unburied bodies.

Days lost to strikes in November was the highest since 1990....

As British Rail would say.. We are getting there...

Even the RCN didn't strike in 1979.

Brittany Ferries have cut sailings from 7 days a week to 5.. in the 70s it was 4.

Just last night, we re-listened to this episode from one of our favourite podcast series; bear in mind they recorded this over year ago before the shit really hit the fan in terms of inflation and fuel prices.

Even my teen DDs kept saying "This sounds so familiar to what we keep hearing on the news this year!" and then "Actually in some ways what's happening now is worse isn't it?"

I think we all need to stick together now. The media seems to be desperate to get people to turn on other groups of people. Particularly the nurses and healthcare. At least that is the impression that I am getting.

I work on the NHS (AHP) it is like trying to fight a forest fire with a leaky bucket with one arm tied behind your back. I don't know what the answer is, but supporting each other will help. And the teachers when they go on strike, they also need to ensure that they communicate why they are striking properly.

It feels very tough at the moment.

Me too. I notice the "we're all supporting Putin" line has been reeled back.

I suspect the Tories will let everything coalesce into a nexus, and then jump ship and leave it to Labour to sort out. I suspect this because at the moment Labour could not be less prepared if they tried.

Given that Sunak can't turn in any direction on anything without facing some sort of split.

Who else had to contain themselves as Priti Patel amongst others launched a "Conservatives for Democracy" push recently ?

Nauseating, eh?
Ugh.

Peregrina · 17/12/2022 09:15

The So called Winter of Discontent wasn't felt throughout the UK. I don't recall any grave-digger strikes in my locality, or rubbish piling up. But nurses have been on strike locally, so this is affecting all parts of the UK except Scotland.

SerendipityJane · 17/12/2022 09:23

It may just be me, but it seems the right - on both sides of the pond - appear to have hit some sort of natural limit to growth. Possibly generational. But they are increasingly morphing into the echo chamber that Remainers were circa 2016-18. The parallels between the ERGy types and the MAGA types are interesting. A couple of friends in the US feel that if the Republicans fluff the opportunity to excise the MAGA continent, they will be saddled with a whole host of "approved by MAGA mini Trumps" in 2024 that will see them lose big time.

Meanwhile in England (note the distinction) the Red and Sea walls of Tory seats are in peril for related reasons.

Charlie Brooker once said in 2017 after Trump was elected "doesn't it seem the cunts have been rolling sixes for ages ?". If he - or Republicans and Tories - knew anything about statistics, they'd know there would be some snake eyes to follow.

DuncinToffee · 17/12/2022 10:14

Omnisis found that 84% of all voters believe ministers should instead raise nurses’ pay at least in line with inflation, with almost a third agreeing that it should rise above that level.

Admittedly a questionaable turn of headline, but ...

John Curtice is known for being right about these things more often than he is wrong.

SerendipityJane · 17/12/2022 17:00

I am vaguely reminded of the media storm against Princess Diana that the Royals so badly misjudged.

Spoiler alert. Someone will die in the coming days. Most likely a child. That death will be blamed on the nurses. Or ambulance drivers. Or both, if the government think it's their lucky day.

quiteathome · 17/12/2022 17:25

Or the government will do what it has done to teachers award a payrise of sorts and not increase money to schools to pay for it. Thereby screwing over everyone especially pupils

Thatsasmashingblouseyouvegoton · 18/12/2022 09:21

Well, I'm starting my social media break early this year so happy Christmas folks and I hope 2023 brings better for us all xxxx

mathanxiety · 19/12/2022 04:53

Its time for people to get out on their doorsteps to clap for the nurses.

Or better still, just not vote Tory. Far more effective.

Alexandra2001 · 19/12/2022 07:50

Brexit has led to a shortage of Care workers, Dentists and specialist doctors for the NHS.... who knew?

www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/news-item/the-costs-of-brexit-make-severe-challenges-even-harder-for-the-nhs-and-social-care

Which then exacerbates the self inflicted shortages of nurses and AHPs which despite knowing we knew we were short on failed to train.

People bang on about corruption in EU whilst people like Bojo, Farage walk free despite the real damage their lies have caused.

mathanxiety · 19/12/2022 16:47

I think a public demonstration of irony would be great.

Is it time for a chorus of that old Leaver classic "Don't They Know Who We Are?" Xmas Grin
