Will the UK now introduce imperial chargers?

They could be disguised as old-fashioned wireless radio sets for that extra ambience.

hanahsaunt · 07/06/2022 17:30

@prettybird sadly Kevin is in one of the safest Tory seats in the UK so can do/say what he likes.

prettybird · 07/06/2022 17:40

I saw that - I looked him up after I'd posted Hmm

And there's no hope of an SNP type paradigm shift to break the swingometre, as happened in 2015 Sad

SerendipityJane · 07/06/2022 18:23

Keeping a weather eye out.

Or in.

Worrying this thread

NEW: The UK government will introduce a bill that will allow future ministers to fundamentally override the Northern Ireland Protocol by emphasising the UK internal market over the EU single market, RTE News understands.

ChiswickFlo, I hope things get better for the foodbank, the Sky news story about the lack of donations in Dewsbury is worrying, it's not even autumn yet when things will get even harder. Weekly shop is going up cumulatively by an extra 50p or £1 every week, that adds up over time.

I did think Boris would escape this time, I think he will go one day and it will probably be something small that will be the straw that breaks the camel's back, despite all the bigger things he has done, like consistently lying about everything.

Thank you.

Petrol £1.80 a litre now here. Diesel £1.90 per litre.

My weekly online grocery bill is now routinely over £100 and some weeks more like £130 (not including top up shops)

I've no idea how some people will cope.

The big tub of country life butter I usually get had a price rise of £3 so that didn't go in the trolley.

prettybird · 07/06/2022 21:20

I've noticed that 4 pints of milk has gone up from 99p to £1.15 to £1.29 in a very short period in Lidl.

prettybird · 07/06/2022 21:23

Actually looking through my Lidl digital receipts, exactly a year ago, 4 pints of milk was £1.09.

Looking at that Tony Connelly thread on the NIP and bearing in mind the widely circulated letter of Jesse Norman in which he stated that unilaterally overriding the protocol would almost certainly be illegal in international law. It is perhaps a clear way of the 148 disgruntled Tories of flexing their muscles.
Abstain or vote against this legislation and it's easy to see how a majority of 80 can melt away.
They may not have got rid of him first time but sometimes you have to flush twice.

DuncinToffee · 07/06/2022 21:51

Guardian is reporting on that WorriedMutha

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/jun/07/rebel-tories-plan-vote-strikes-to-capitalise-on-pms-weakened-position

MPs will attempt to stymie Boris Johnson’s legislative agenda, starting with bill on NI protocol

WorriedMutha · 07/06/2022 22:02

That's interesting as I had just seen that Peter Foster was saying something similar on Twitter. The thing is though, it has often been said recently that the rebels are not a coherent organised group of leavers, remainers, moderates or right wingers. Some would reject the legislation on the NIP on principle or to be disruptive but it might be red meat to Steve Baker or Andrew Brigden.
Nevertheless, 148 loose cannons is bad news for the greased pig.

Great thread here.

Why Boris is the worst Prime Minister ever...

HannibalHeyes · 08/06/2022 09:18

Elinor Elliot
@ElliotElinor
Fun fact: 30 minutes before the results of the VONC vote yesterday, the government scrapped its plans for an HS2 link to the West Coast Main Line. Guess whose constituency it would have run through, and who was dead set against it?

Graham Brady, Chair of the 1922 committee.

I shared this on the Johnson party thread, thank you!

A handy Schengen calculator for those who still wish to go to the EU.

Especially useful, I would imagine, for those Brexit voters who haven't managed to secure an EU passport and are whining about getting what they voted for.

The only limitation that I can see is that it doesn't mention the EEA countries in Schengen.

DuncinToffee · 08/06/2022 11:39

hanahsaunt

I just came across this tweet Smile

Spare a thought for kevinhollinrake MP for Thirsk & Malton

He voted for Boris in VONC & the very next day his weekly call with the Home Office to discuss his objections to asylum seekers being housed at an RAF base in his constituency was cancelled!

Depressing datapoint from @OECD report.
The gap between rich and poor in terms of how much they’re impacted by higher food and energy prices is greater in the UK than in all other leading economies.

More winning!

"Economic growth in the UK will grind to a halt next year with only Russia, hobbled by western sanctions, performing worse among the G20 leading economies, the OECD forecast on Wednesday"

First, Sheer f'ing hypocrisy of Frost. Blaming "weakness" of UK position for outcome of Brexit deal? After Brexiteers spent effing years insisting "we held all the cards". FFS!

Want to go cycling in Europe this summer? You'll need to courier your bike across, rent one there, or find some other way to go - because Eurostar won't take them because Brexit has introduced too many customs complexities...
