Not something you want everyone to know, obviously, so I'll drop it here, but heard a fascinating suggestion that Boris heyday is yet to come.

Imagine following the Tory party leadership election, if Boris basically refused to step down as Prime Minister claiming that he has the support of parliament - which is better than the support of the Tory party.

Thus far, convention has been the leader of the majority is invited to form a government. But that relies on people respecting convention.

Yes, it would be a constitutional explosion - but so was proroguing parliament.

Trump didn't (or hasn't) gone quietly. Why would his acolyte be any different ? If a week is a long time in politics, then 7 weeks is an epoch.

Exactly what I've been saying to ds1

We really do live in interesting times...

In other news, DD2 has passed her first year Marine Biology despite completely missing one end of year exam due to sleeping through three alarms. Fibromyalgia really is a bitch.

And we will soon be travelling to the Netherlands to get her passport renewed because you can't get an embassy appointment for love nor money right now and she doesn't have enough left on the current one for her fieldwork trip to South Africa. We've decided to say fuck it, get a nice AirBnB and make a mini holiday of it - the facility at Schiphol Airport turns a passport request round in 5 days!

DuncinToffee · 12/07/2022 11:25

Getting an embassy appointment is really luck of the draw. I managed to get one last year but there were plenty of appointments then at the visa centre (or whatever it is called).

A mini break sounds lovely though, better than a day trip to London imo.

DuncinToffee · 12/07/2022 11:27

And well done to DD!

DS passed for his second year.

Well done to your dd 🌟
Ds1 passed his first year too (2 x 1sts in 2 modules)
Very proud. Its been shit for them.
Well to your dc too @DuncinToffee 🌟

Yay to all the students passing their year! Next week I am going to DD1's graduation.

She's in the same boat passport wise but has no urgent need to travel. Passport valid until end October. She's been told to check the various websites daily to see if a slot has come available through cancellation and has all her paperwork at the ready.

prettybird · 12/07/2022 12:23

Ds and dh (suitably anonymous Wink) at ds' graduation last week - walking to the "proper" university to take nice pictures (actual graduation ceremony had been 5 miles out of town at the soulless barn of an exhibition centre Sad)

He started his job yesterday - he's been fortunate enough to get a job, using his PIR degree, in the niche field that he wanted, public affairs. He's feeling out of his depth today on the Zoom calls (it will mostly be working from home until he is allowed out needs to see clients) but we've told him that that normal in the first few days/weeks, especially for a first graduate job.

He's planning on staying with us for a minimum of 2 months until he's settled and then he'll look for a flat.

We can't go anywhere abroad on holiday Sad: we followed the advice and didn't book anything until we got dh's renewal done. It's now been 10 weeks (10 weeks tomorrow that they received the old passport) but we can't expedite it as we have nothing booked ConfusedAngry

Contrast that to ds' passport (renewal but first adult) which was sent off mid April and he got it back in just over 2 weeks Shock

Oh, that's shit ☹️

We're off to Northumberland this week. Rather glad I'm heading north after seeing the predicted heat this weekend 😵‍💫

Oh well done to everyone’s DC’s definitely been a very difficult time for them all🥂

pointythings · 12/07/2022 13:59

@prettybird that is really shit. The situation with passports is just crazy! Getting DD2's done is costing me well north of £1k with all the travel, but at least it's a 5 day service and we're turning it into a mini holiday (and also bringing back tons of tasty Dutch goodies, hence taking the car).

We're hoping for a proper family holiday next year, bringing foster son and his DP too.

borntobequiet · 12/07/2022 18:16

I think I remember your DS getting his place at University, @prettybird .
Goodness, these threads have been going a long time. Well done to all DC.
My own DD is starting her PGCE in September. She’s been putting the inevitable off for too many years now (she’ll be a great teacher) but has had some interesting experiences on the way.

Euro now at parity with the dollar.

SerendipityJane · 13/07/2022 16:40

Briefly caught a rumour that the Prime Minister Boris Johnson is planning on calling a VoNC in his own government.

I wonder if he'll be tweeting his supporters that it'll be "wild" soon ?

Incidentally why did nobody tell me the French for people who use Twitter is "Twittos" ?

The VoNC is on the front page of the Guardian.

SerendipityJane · 13/07/2022 17:12

The VoNC is on the front page of the Guardian.

I don't always see UK newspaper headlines in real time, but I was waiting for that one. Annoying.

If no one else can see "PM for PM" as a tagline for the dim, there's no hope anymore.

Chevyimpala67 · 14/07/2022 12:18

Well, whoever gets the PM job, they'll be out in 18 months.
You can't make a success of brexshit. It's not possible. In every possible way, it will leave the UK poorer and globally more irrelevant.
So my prediction is a new PM then GE late next year.

prettybird · 14/07/2022 14:08

I wish I could be as confident @Chevyimpala67 Sad

Unfortunately I think there is a certain cult following who won't admit to make a mistake - either for voting for Brexit or (in the Red Wall) for having voted Conservative, so will continue to cut off their noses to spite their faces Confused - to everyone's continued detriment Angry

To them, to justify their votes, it will always be someone else's or something else's fault. Never their responsibility or the direct consequence of their choices.

So......

• Cost of living crisis: world wide/Ukraine/Covid. Despite other countries, although suffering, not suffering as badly (our power prices have gone through the roof compared to, say, France).

• Lack of growth: Covid and nasty EU's fault.

• Inflation: Covid and greedy trade unions. Nothing to do with effectively being at full employment and the cost of power (which the government could influence but chooses not to

• Inward Investment dropping : Covid and nasty EU putting in barriers

....and so on SadAngry

SerendipityJane · 14/07/2022 16:51

Latest grim smile is at the MPs who are surprised that now credit card companies can charge more for UK-EU transactions, they are.

If only someone, somewhere had warned them.

Yes, if only....

SerendipityJane · 14/07/2022 17:21

Yes, Britain, they are laughing at you. And if Sunak wins, I can't see the narrative being anything other than "UK has to import PM to fix Brexit" being the headline in a lot of papers around the world.

Mind you, at least he is of planet earth. Not like Mad Nad and Dorries to know.
