I bet the Queen is thinking that she could do without all this at her time of life. I wonder what Charlie would do?

Congrats to your DS prettybird.

borntobequiet · 07/07/2022 02:36

Well it took a little longer than we thought but the final implosion of the Conservative party is rather more spectacular and horrifying than could be predicted.
What a shower of grotesques they are. What a plight the country is in.

Peregrina · 07/07/2022 05:28

No, the Fat Lady hasn't yet sung. She's there waiting in the wings, desperate to get on stage though.

Chevyimpala67 · 07/07/2022 07:45

50 gone now.
Chief whip at No 10.
The man is fucking delusional.

SerendipityJane · 07/07/2022 07:51

None of this pantomime would have happened if it wasn't for Brexit. Something to point out when the Tories try to crowbar another Brexiteer into leadership.

Still at least Louise is getting what they wanted. Because if you wanted Brexit, this is what you get. This is what trying to spend a dud cheque looks like.

Chevyimpala67 · 07/07/2022 08:21

Now up to 53

But neither the Tories or Labour are talking about undoing Brexit, so what exactly would be the point? The big issue for most people at the moment is the cost of living increases - some of which is undoubtedly due to Brexit but not all.

Any incoming PM is going to end up skewered on the paradox that has killed Johnson. Either Brexit is done - in which case whether a PM is a Brexiteer is irrelevant. Or Brexit is not done. In which case we "have" to have a Brexiteer PM to get it done.

Now Schrodinger's Brexit may be a perfectly valid debating point for the philosophy of physics, but it's not really a basis for stable government.

Or: TL;DR - we'll be seeing this again before 3 years. Theresa May had it (surely someone has realised the deja vu ?) . Johnson is having it, and whoever comes next will have to face it.

I've been trying to catch up all today as I was at ds'graduation yesterday: an MA in Politics and International Relations Grin

Many congratulations hope you had a fabulous day.

dontcallmelen · 07/07/2022 08:50

Zahawi just resigned I think.

Zahawi just resigned I think.

Scrub that heard it wrong got confused with the latest flurry of resignations.

DuncinToffee · 07/07/2022 09:14

Johnson will resign today

to be fair he got about as close as he possibly could with that letter without resigning. "with regret I must resign from the government" is about all that was missing.

SerendipityJane · 07/07/2022 09:23

He's gone.

I expect the pound to rally and FTSE to surge. You can bet your life all the scurrying rodents that resigned called their brokers first.

This is what Brexit does and will do to Prime Ministers. How long before the next one hits that same fork in the road ?

quiteathome · 07/07/2022 09:34

What a day to attempt to concentrate on things.

Chevyimpala67 · 07/07/2022 13:58

He isnt gone.
He didn't use the word "resign".
He is still PM.
Watch this space....

HannibalHeyes · 08/07/2022 09:37

This is just brilliant!

"This is just brilliant!"

It certainly is . I watched it this morning and retweeted it. Very clever and hilarious !

Chevyimpala67 · 08/07/2022 18:23

Martin Lewis says predictions for energy price rises now 64% in October. Could even be higher.

Food prices sky rocketing.

Fuel prices now over £2 per litre in sime areas.

No treasury staff, the govt has imploded, no new leader til at least September...

Nothing to see here.

Everything's going brilliantly.

HannibalHeyes · 08/07/2022 21:19

This is where we have reached with ministerial appointments...

I caught up with Question Time late last night.

Firstly it was astonishing to note the audience reaction in what was a true blue Tory constituency.

Secondly, did no on ever tell Jenny Jones before she cast her vote for Brexit, that the animal welfare standards the EU mandated were a minimum? They would not have refused to accept food produced to a higher standard. She is now about to find out that she's voted to lose the standards we fought for. Well done Jenny!

Thirdly, what a pompous sneering ass Rees-Mogg is. Trust him to get a dig in about the EU and the NI Protocol, when I believe the reality is that Liz Truss hasn't bothered herself to meet the EU over the issue.

I didn't see it @Peregrina
Astonishing in what way?

Peregrina · 10/07/2022 21:09

Sorry, got my programmes mixed up - it was Any Questions on the radio. My comments stand though, particularly No 3.

I can't watch Question Time these days.
