Did you read the conclusion?

Pretty damning conclusion from the cross party (and maj Tory) committee: “the Govt has not demonstrated a strong understanding of these issues and even on occasion sought to pass the blame onto the sector on the basis of incorrect information about its own immigration system.”

And higher wages doesn't automatcally mean able to fill vacancies

Report cites example of Sharrington Strawberries which has increased wages by 50% but filled only 2/3s of vacancies

Probably because it is fucking expensive living rurally.

I find myself musing that the Tories have managed to remove almost any incentive to actually own your own home ... a thought I had as I realised our energy bill now exceeds our mortgage. It seems another area where they have seen the dream Thatcher sold a generation and said "We can't have that. What ? Ordinary folk doing something that only their betters should be doing ? How can we put a stop to that ?"

Yes, saw that earlier Hanibal, it's brilliant. Someone had done a song version as well! Grin

If you pay people as much to work the land as companies pay city bankers or lawyers, or Doctors, or whatever profession you'd care to name I bet people would be queing up to take the jobs. Question of priorities. A 50% increase on the minimum wage isn't anything like enough, clearly.

That's only a tiny part of the problem though.

No use earning £100,000 a year if you find you are spending £110,000 on mortgage, childcare and transport as well as 16 hours out of your 24 hours getting to, performing and getting back from your job.

However, as there is more joy over one sinner saved, it's good to see a slight inkling that it's maybe not quite as easy as all the slogans made it sound dawning.

That is never going to happen now is it really, and imagine the price of strawberries!

Well obviously.

Besides which I've noticed that almost anything sold by weight these past few years is shit. Tasteless and watery. It's almost as if they grow for profit not flavour. Which I'm sure isn't true. Although the only tomatoes DW and I have recalled with any flavour were grown by DF in his Godfather tribute garden ...

We could ofcourse become a communist country...

DGRossetti · 07/04/2022 17:22

Given the inefficiencies, corruption and dwindling consumer choice, I thought we were.

Plus the massive state machine we appear to have acquired. In all the wrong places.

borntobequiet · 07/04/2022 17:50

@DuncinToffee

On a positive note, the Report makes clear labour shortages have increased wages.

But
It also says these costs will inevitably be passed on to consumers.

That was always something that puzzled me, people saying “wages will go up”. But of course that means prices go up too. Fine if you are happy to pay more so people can get paid more - I am - but oddly didn’t seem to occur to many.

The people who voted for Brexit were hardly masters of economics.

...and still the insults arrive. I'd have thought you'd be better served trying to change people's minds on this, but you do you.

Yet still we're proved correct, time after time, after time.

If seeing that catastrofuck that we're suffering as a direct result of Brexshit isn't enough to change your mind, but someone being nice to you is, well, that just proves it even further...

LouiseCollins28 · 07/04/2022 21:32

Not remotely fussed if people are nice to me. A whole class of people over 17m were criticised in base terms.

If you folks want the Brexit decision reversed and #Rejoin, which I presume most of you do, then you'll need to convince some of the 17m to change their minds...

Any thoughts on how you are going to do that? Your move.

pointythings · 07/04/2022 21:51

Louise I'm sure some of the 17 million will have the nous to realise they were lied to and that none of the benefits they were promised will come to pass. And of course there's demographics too.

As for changing minds - I know two in my not very large circle of family who already have. They're both lifelong Tories who will not be voting Conservative again either because they are disgusted with the lies, the corruption and the self-serving behaviour, especially around COVID which hit them hard.

prettybird · 07/04/2022 21:56

The very fact that the age profile of those that voted for Brexit was skewed to the "oldies" means that in the nearly 6 years since the vote took place, many of them have died and 6 years worth of younger voters - who are the ones who are being and will be most negatively affected by Brexit - are now on the voting register.

HannibalHeyes · 07/04/2022 23:08

Yeah, funnily enough, it's telling the truth that seems to be changing people's minds, rather than patronising them...

LouiseCollins28 · 07/04/2022 23:53

#Rejoiners patronising people has surely been tested to distruction on these threads. Been the way of things for years on here.

TheElementsSong · 08/04/2022 06:24

I'm not sure why anybody would be trying to nicely and tenderly change Leavers' minds, seeing as Brexit Got Done remember? So whinging about how people are so rude to complain about the fucking obvious shitshow that is actually happening in front of us has got nothing to do with expecting Remainers to help Leavers change their minds, but everything to do with not wanting to admit that this shitshow is what you voted for and we Told You So.

DrBlackbird · 08/04/2022 08:09

AFAIK these threads have gone back to before the referendum. I joined a few years back. Most of what I saw were informed, evidenced, and thoughtful arguments about how, on balance, remaining in the EU was better than leaving it. There were arguments about trade, about the impact on NI, on policing, on research, on governance and joint governing bodies, on finance, on FOM, on workers rights, and animal and human health standards etc etc etc.

None of those arguments, absolutely none of them changed any Leaver’s mind. In fact, there were a whole series of counter threads simply stating their preference to leave. The gap between reasons for staying and reasons for leaving was/is unreconcilable.

It is not my responsibility to try to convince friends who voted leave to change their minds, which for them seemed to stem from a sort of ‘you can’t tell me what to do’ set of arguments or immigration or fears of a EU-wide army (which might come in handy about now). In the immediate aftermath, most of them had no personal immediate impact so didn’t feel the consequences of their vote.

However, I will admit to reminding them that they voted for it when bits here and there are slowly but negatively impacting on them. Petty perhaps but I am frustrated at their intransigence in light of all the damn evidence that leaving was going to create a shit show for most. Also frustrated that they voted for this Tory government when even died in the wool Tories were saying not to vote for Johnson.

Yet here we are…

DrBlackbird · 08/04/2022 08:17

Not to mention how these threads have been a sanity saver when I could not understand just why family and friends continued to celebrate both Leaving and Johnson’s win.
