Louise, just use your remote to watch the regular election night rather than the alternative one.

The right wingers go around calling others snowflakes, woke and fragile yet they seem to be the most fragile of the lot wanting the rest of the country to be put in to the right wing version of an echo chamber

But I think that accusation of ‘bias’ is a straw man argument of sorts. For me, the importance of C4 news, for example, had to do with its integrity and editorial independence. I trust it as not just a source of news, but as a source with journalists capable of analysis of that news.

‘Unbiased’ just means Laura Kuenssberg describing or repeating x has happened or y said blah blah. No analysis at all. No grilling of politicians or trying to hold them to account from a knowledgeable perspective. So Louise’s perception of bias is my perception of integrity and intelligence. Rightly or wrongly I’m much less likely to trust a commercial news source.

Given that C4 was profitable and didn’t require taxpayer’s money, the only reason to privatise it is political.

Grantanow · 05/04/2022 23:06

And Dorris didn't seem to know C4 paid for itself commercially at the Select Committee. Brain not engaged? Of course, Johnson chose her. Need I say more?

pointythings · 06/04/2022 08:32

'Bias' in the case of Channel 4 basically means 'any political analysis that doesn't fawn on the Tories and worship Brexit'.

Which is why the government wants them privatised.

@LouiseCollins28

public service broadcasting at its finest here. Nice and unbiased just as it should be

What exactly was wrong with that? a small minority booed, Cons (and brexit) elected on a minority of the vote, so a majority didn't support him, the tories or brexit....

Its live broadcasting, they cannot control the audience or do you want Putin style news programing?

Which to be honest is what the Conservatives want, no criticism of them or their policies, control our media and thats what we will get.... most recently now in Hungary, yes a democratic election but a controlled media.

Ch4 reported the facts, the Tories won by a landslide & its cultural vandalism to destroy possibly the most successful (content wise) of any TV channel - its not broke, leave it alone.

Peregrina · 06/04/2022 09:15

I have just applied for a GHIC since my EHIC has just expired.

I note how in fact it is less useful than before not covering the EEA countries. I also note the petty dishonesty of Brexiters - a tick for where it might be extended to other countries (but hasn't yet and pigs might fly one day.) A cross in the box for the EHIC covering other countries - but the Brexiters have No Idea whether the EU might seek to widen the scope of the EHIC card.

Not that the EHIC helped me when I was abroad - I had to stump up for a private prescription and my travel insurance also wriggled out of paying.

Bias to me means that its shouldn't be obvious (IMO it shouldn't be known but we'll stick with "obvious" for now) what viewpoint a person reporting a story has on that story or the person or people in the middle of it. Holding people to account is entirely right if it is done with exactly the same approach to people from all points of view.

We know this doesn't happen, it is entirely obvious to me when an interviewer has a sympathetic view of their subject or an antagonistic one.

It was entirely obvious from their demeanour what the attitude was of the people presenting the programme, to say nothing of the audience booing. Of course a broadcaster can control who the put in their studio audience, do you think they just pick people off the streets?

Content wise, interestingly C4 don't produce anything themselves. They commission it all so the value yor refer to regarding content isn't theirs.

pointythings · 06/04/2022 13:54

They commission it all so the value yor refer to regarding content isn't theirs.

Except that it is - because they are choosing to commission the content. They are therefore responsible for that content being out there.

DGRossetti · 06/04/2022 13:59

Bring back the red triangle.

And what other channel would have shown "Sebastiane" in any form. Ever ? Maybe not for everyone (I can't see it appearing on Louises bucket list ...) but it did stretch my Latin ...

HannibalHeyes · 06/04/2022 14:28

But I don't see Louise having a go at the bias of the BBC when Laura Kuenssberg is merely parroting No 10 press releases as if she was reporting fact...

Brexit bonus

Lewis Goodall
Quite the summary from the (cross-party) Environment Select Committee report into “acute labour shortages” in agriculture, due to Brexit and Covid. 500,000 vacancies causing…

-crops to go unharvested, left to rot in fields.
-healthy pigs culled.
-disruption to food supply.
Report: "The evidence we have received leaves us in no doubt that labour shortages, caused by Brexit and accentuated by the pandemic, have badly affected businesses across the food and farming sector. If not resolved swiftly, they threaten to shrink the sector permanently."
^Report says at least 27000 pigs have been culled due to lack of butchers, though real figure likely far higher: The NPA said culling was `an incredible waste of healthy pigs and good pork, [ … ] incredibly damaging for our supply chains' and 'financially ruinous' for farmers."

DuncinToffee · 06/04/2022 16:45

On a positive note, the Report makes clear labour shortages have increased wages.

But
It also says these costs will inevitably be passed on to consumers.

Well yeah, of course they will!
pointythings · 07/04/2022 11:00

Where in the Leavers' list of benefits did it say 'Food will get more expensive because of labour shortages'? Hmm

Grantanow · 07/04/2022 12:03

A Guardian reader pointed out today that a benefit of Brexit is that since the Mogg was given the job of identifying Brexit benefits we have heard little from him!

No problems here. But then I have an EU passport too.

Grin

If only the same could be said about Frost and his 'ultra-Remainers will seize on anything to try to claim Brexit is failing. Don't take them seriously' whining.

www.theregister.com/2022/04/07/ec_right_to_repair/

European lawmakers are voting in plenary on a Right to Repair resolution today amid calls for the initiative to go even further.

Notice how the UKs manufacturers need to comply despite not having a vote.

On the environment committee that Lewis Goodall tweeted about it all says "the government must...." where the hell is "the food industry must...." Most notably "the food industry must"...start paying people a wage that makes the job attractive to potential employees.

When the consumer starts paying enough they will I am sure.
