@ICouldHaveCheckedFirst

So sorry Flo. Godd job she has you. Hoping for better news for her today.
Really hope so as well much love.
DGRossetti · 04/04/2022 12:58

If I was on a jury, why would I find anyone guilty of anything ?

How can a head teacher tell pupils why they must follow rules ?

pointythings · 04/04/2022 13:07

So sorry to hear this, Flo. Flowers

mathanxiety · 04/04/2022 15:07

Flo utterly horrific. Your poor mum.

ChiswickFlo · 04/04/2022 15:22

Thanks.
Just been for a visit.
She seems slightly more with it than yesterday.
My siblings are being utterly useless as usual

What I find fascinating - and I'm sure I've banged on about this before - is that in my (many!) A&e visits and hospital appointments with mum over the past 10 years, 95% of adult a&e service users are elderly (65+)

And yet these are the folk voting tory, yes?

Or maybe it's people who have never had to use the nhs/a&e?

I dunno.

God, I'm tired:(

I think there's also ageism in the NHS in terms of how people are prioritised. Pretty much exactly a year ago I was in A&E with DD2, then 18, with suspected appendicitis. She was whisked in, assessed and admitted in under 2 hours even though going by your account she was much less ill at that point than your mum. She had surgery that same day on the emergency list (at 10.30 pm, don't tell me surgeons don't earn their pay!).

I do wonder if she got such speedy treatment because she's young?

ChiswickFlo · 04/04/2022 16:23

Probably...
(and I'm very glad she did)
Mum has told me more than once that once she hit 65 she felt that she was a burden to drs
Hard to argue tbh
The surgical SHO was very clear to me that if her bowel perforates they won't operate. No one wants to operate on stone mums age with her comorbidities. It would bad for their mortality stats

Sorry to hear about your mum Flo

I think there's also ageism in the NHS in terms of how people are prioritised and treated. Not to operate at 76 is based on so many assumptions but feasibly, with surgery, your mum might live another 10 years.

Saw this blatant ageism with my lovely FiL. Treated as if he was an idiot. Told by consultant that he had heartburn. Actually had 5L of fluid in his lungs and mesothelioma. But ageism seems to run through much of British society. I was bemused at the idea of 25 year old being a ‘mature’ student.

ChiswickFlo · 04/04/2022 16:48

Yes, I agree @drblackbird

She's certainly "better" than yesterday evening in that she's not saying she's at the co op anymore!

I'm not even sure surgery would be the best thing tbh (it would involve a colostomy) but to not have the option?

The HCA on today is lovely though

All healthcare decisions should be made on clinical criteria. Age can be a part of that, but only in the sense that it impacts potential clinical outcomes, and even then the individual's physical health and comorbidities should be looked at. Anything else just isn't acceptable.

My mum was 66 when she had her accident while cycling in India (broke her pelvis and had a fronto-temporal head injury). Once she got back to the UK (which is a whole other story although the care in India was exemplary), my dad had to fight to get her any rehab at all as she was "older than 65" Shock

Funnily enough, once the Herald did an article about her (comparing the care in India with what she experienced when she returned) a place in the PDRU (Physically Disabled Rehabilitation Unit) miraculously suddenly opened up Hmm

But my dad (a former medic himself and very pro the NHS - always refused to do any private work) does acknowledge that the care that the majority of Indians can access in no way compares to the tertiary care they experienced in Ajmer and then Delhi via their insurance.

Channel 4 up for sale soon

Alex Mahon, CEO of Channel 4 has confirmed in an email to staff that the government has confirmed it is it’s intention to privatise the channel. Says ministers have rejected their proposals to keep the station in public ownership.

HarrietPierce7 · 04/04/2022 20:12

They'll have a dodgy mate waiting in the wings to buy it , and turn it into the Tory propaganda channel.

They can’t forgive Jon Snow’s criticism of the bloody Tories.

Sir Ian Cheshire’s appointment as head of channel 4 and the appointment of Michael Grade, a Conservative peer, as the new chair of Ofcom sealed its fate. "Lord Grade has been openly sceptical about the value of public service status in television".

Julian Knight has suggested it is revenge for C4 coverage of Brexit and the perceived 'personal attacks' on Johnson

He will still support the plans.

Boris Johnson is expected to announce plans 'to send migrants to Rwanda to be processed in a deal worth millions to the nation'.

Under the plans, asylum seekers will be flown to Rwanda for processing and settlement, with the UK set to pay millions as part of the deal, according to The Times.

Discussions are reported to be under wraps, with ministers only referencing "country X" during meetings.

public service broadcasting at its finest here. Nice and unbiased just as it should be

Well you know Louise, there is such a thing as switch channel if you don't like the program.

Eh, don't I have a right to expect that public news broadcasts are unbiased?? Don't we all?
