Yes, I think we have got to go on the offensive and not keep pointing out what is wrong with Brexit, but how much better being in the EU or at least in the Single Market and Customs Union would be for the country.

DuncinToffee · 05/05/2022 19:46

Will the war in Ukraine influence people's views on the EU?

Peregrina · 05/05/2022 20:00

This news of yet another firm falling into Administration does not give me the slightest feeling that our post Brexit economy is bouyant or growing. Worse, it will be the poorest people who suffer from the loss of jobs.

It's certainly meant much greater support from current and potential new members....

Remains to get seen what effect it has here.

Ds1 pointed out to me that in 1975 Interest Rates were at 26.6% so we've a way to go until we are ad desperate as we were back then....

26.6% inflation (in 1975) is eyewatering Shock. Hopefully we won't get to that, despite how much everything is going up, much of it was in place before Russia invaded Ukraine but the war has added to it. Energy prices are going to be a big problem next winter. Every time I book/alter my online food shop, something goes up. I'm playing "what has gone up this time?" each time I log in, it's very worrying as I'm not sure how people are going to absorb the rises. Butter is now nearly £2 Shock. How is the foodbank @ChiswickFlo ?

But Brexiters assured us that food standards would rise, that the nasty EU was what held us back. Not that we could now eat radioactive food.

Seeing Johnson enjoying his radioactive popcorn reminds me of John Gummer feeding his daughter a beefburger at the height of the BSE crisis.

Peregrina · 05/05/2022 22:44

For those interested in the election results a handy table showing what's up for grabs. I note that there are still one or two UKIP seats hanging about. Will they go back to Labour, or have they well and truly be captured by the Tories?

ChiswickFlo · 05/05/2022 23:19

The new statesman live blog is already very interesting...

can radioactive food be used to heat the elderly?

Peregrina · 06/05/2022 00:33

Labour holds on comfortably in Brexit Central Sunderland.

ChiswickFlo · 06/05/2022 07:26

Hmmmm
Interestingly, the tories seem to have lost in areas where they were out canvassing hard (TM etc)
As expected they gained or held on brexshitty areas

Sinn Fein are hoping to become the biggest party at Stormont

Saw that on BBC. Can this be true? What will it mean?

borntobequiet · 06/05/2022 07:38

It would mean ructions and if the Unionist parties refuse to put up a Deputy First Minister, could lead to direct rule from Westminster, I think. After that, who knows?

www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/politics/jim-allister-dup-and-uup-should-refuse-to-nominate-deputy-first-minister-if-sinn-fein-become-largest-party-40889534.html

borntobequiet · 06/05/2022 07:40

Oops that link a bit out of date but those issues were being discussed the other day on the BBC. I’ll try to find.

DrBlackbird · 06/05/2022 08:11

Thanks for article @borntobequiet It implies that SF majority is more indicative of people not voting for homophobes, misogynists, and never-ending crisis politics (in the DUP) rather than being anti-union per se.

Chris Grey latest blog.

ChiswickFlo · 07/05/2022 07:14

Chris grey is SO good on this

Not sure what to think re: local election results...mixed bag. Tories didn't do as badly as they should have, Labour got some big results in the cities (Dudley was a surprise...) But I think the big news is the LDs and Green gains.

SNP still the largest party in Scotland but labour in 2nd place which is as good a result as they could hope for tbh.

Looks like SF will be the largest party in NI. Not sure what this will mean for NI. Pleased the DUP are being seen for what they are.

I'm still betting on a GE end of this year/early next.

This winter will be grim....

(Mum needs an outpatient test. Should have been done next week - after a 6 week wait - been told she won't be seen til the autumn. Mil may have parkinsons. 35 week wait to be seen on nhs. Food prices are eye watering here. Fuel prices going up again in October. The nhs may well collapse this winter. I forsee the army/fire brigade etc being called in).
