I found that thread about the state of the country very depressing. Back in the 1950s and 60s I think we were more like Scandinavia in that we believed in a mixed economy and knew that some things were better provided for collectively by either local Government or centrally. Since Thatcher we have had naked greed and individualism. However we were always pulled in different directions - while Churchill was talking of a Special Relationship with the US, which was always a fiction IMO, he also tried to big up the Commonwealth. The end result, metaphorically, we didn't know which horse we were riding nor in which direction.

Oh no DGR please reconsider. Been following your posts for years and this place will be the worse without you.

Tanith · 22/04/2022 18:21

Please stay around, at least for the leadership contest, DGR!

P.S. Told you to keep your eye on Jeremy Hunt, didn't I? :)

And in "some might call this corruption" news...

Hi, I lurk around on these threads on an occasional check-in basis and this caught my eye. Full fact are questioning this claim and it’s coming up wanting.

“That company is not registered in Rwanda. It has had several government contracts, but none appear to be to do with immigration.”

I don’t know about land grabs, but we all know how information is twisted on the internet.

pointythings · 23/04/2022 09:31

ParsleyRosemarySage the corruption thing is the least of it. Treating asylum seekers in this way is morally indefensible and will be economically far more costly than processing in the UK. It wouldn't surprise me if someone were planning to make money out of it, but the bigger concern is that it should be happening at all.

ParsleyRosemarySage · 23/04/2022 10:24

There are or were threads about that, and yes I agree it’s not a good policy. But specific accusations of corruption that isn’t happening shouldn’t be bandied about wildly imo. Anyway, returning to lurking!

pointythings · 23/04/2022 10:28

Frankly, this government has brought accusations of corruption on itself by having been proved to be corrupt so many times. They can't now whine about being side-eyed for ones they may not have done - the trust is gone. Neither can their supporters whine about it.

Hardly seems an efficient use of a minister’s time. Poor time management skills might be the reason why he’s not realised any ‘Government Efficiencies’ 🤔

NB just realised that there are no more unique MN icons… v sad.

Perhaps Sir Humphrey found an alternative activity him to do 😊

I met a Leave voter who regretted her vote yesterday!
Most leave voters seem willing to burn their own house down before regretting Brexit so I was very surprised, and she just raised it herself out of the blue. She was full of regret and even guilt. I was astonished. She said she'd been such a fool and didn't know much about it at the time. I bet a man would never show regret like that.

Tanith · 23/04/2022 22:57

One of my neighbours regretted his vote a few years ago. He's heartbroken. He has 3 children and two are disabled. He believed the lies and thought Brexit would improve things for his family.
I don't hold that against him: these people threw everything they could at persuading the electorate. I do blame the cynical politicians who knowingly manipulated people like my neighbour for their own gain. I hope their treachery will one day be held to account. They are beneath contempt.

Off to read some of the links. because it's better than fighting an extremely glitchy mn

Kendodd · 23/04/2022 23:08

@Tanith
Tbh I have very little sympathy for the (very few) who do regret voting Leave, they have done enormous damage to the country and should be blamed. Brexit could have been stopped if enough had changed their minds and been vocal about it. So unless they are now speaking out loudly, writing to MPs , never voting for any brexiteers etc they get no forgiveness from me.

Kendodd · 23/04/2022 23:15

One thing I don't get though is this whole idea that you must always vote and it's all the fault of non voters. If you don't have strong opinions or really don't understand the issues (and EU referendum you needed an absolutely massive amount of knowledge to be reasonably well informed, far more, than it became very clear, most MPs even had) then what's wrong with not voting. Voting without knowledge might as well be just picking a number.
