Well.
Don't get cancer, eh?

ChiswickFlo · 16/03/2022 15:42

I'm so delighted Nazanin is coming home

But the Govt could have written off this debt years ago and secured her release.

And have only done so now because we need ME oil and the tories need ME cash

ChiswickFlo · 16/03/2022 15:43

I suppose it just highlights how utterly corrupt this govt is and will continue to be.

pollyannaperspective · 16/03/2022 15:45

Louise ref £400m
We were given the money, we didn't give them the tanks - so, actually, no tanks involved - that was the point at issue. We are returning their money to them, not UK taxpayers' money as I have seen suggested.

Rather good article from Jon Simpson on bbc website today re: War in Ukraine.

Hard not to disagree.

I won't post a link as mine always seem to come out massively long!

DuncinToffee · 16/03/2022 16:20

Thank you! ☺️

Peregrina · 16/03/2022 17:20

We have seen an example from AuldAlliance about how Brexit has damaged her University's links when it comes to student exchange programmes.

It's a pity that Louise can't come up with a similar concrete example of how Brexit has benefited her. But she hopes that we will invest in nuclear and she doesn't think the working time directives will be repealed.

Somewhere, someone must surely have a real example of something which we can do now that we couldn't do before. One which is of benefit to the country. I don't count very dark blue passports, nor do I count the vaccine programme.

Peregrina · 16/03/2022 17:23

I wish I could laugh at the Week in Tory but really I am embarrassed and ashamed of the depths to which our Government has plunged.

Still, I think we are overdue a Corbyn would have been worse.

DGRossetti · 16/03/2022 17:23

Which government ? The Iranians ? Why on earth should they ? It was money they were owed and which the UK - quite frankly - had no right withholding.

Apologies I thought it was a debt rather money we owed the Iranians
ChiswickFlo · 16/03/2022 17:27

(That is, something the UK govt could write off itswim?)

DGRossetti · 16/03/2022 17:35

We have seen an example from AuldAlliance about how Brexit has damaged her University's links when it comes to student exchange programmes.

I've started trawling through our historic data, but the CEO is suggesting a 10% reduction in turnover. Most of which was the costs of making changes to processes.

We trade in AU and NZ and apparently the new "deals" are actually going to increase our costs to those territories. When I feel like listening to an accountant for an hour, I'll know more.

prettybird · 16/03/2022 17:35

No - the £400 million was money that the previous regime (under the Shah of Iran) had paid the UK back in 1979 for tanks but then the Revolution happened so they were never delivered. (To rub salt in the wound, they were later delivered to Iraq Shock)

With compound interest the amount would be well over £1 billion Shock

Blimey...
Peregrina · 16/03/2022 17:45

It's amazing isn't it, how this Government can find the money when it needs to? That money of course is only a little more than we supposedly sent to the EU per week, which is now earmarked for the NHS! It's just a co-incidence that the last few weeks has seen a potential reshufflling in the world order, and suddenly, we might have to learn to live with Iran, because we need them after all.

I am extremely pleased that Nazanin has been released and is on her way back. I hope it goes well for her and her family but I can't imagine that it won't be anything but difficult for them all.

HannibalHeyes · 16/03/2022 19:35

When it comes down to it, I guess "I knew what I was voting for" doesn't mean "I had thought through all the implications of my vote and decided that on balance the benefits of leaving outweighed the benefits of being in the largest trading bloc on the planet", which is what I suspect most remain voters thought (in reverse, obs), but means "yes, I'm xenophobic".

ChiswickFlo · 16/03/2022 19:56

Meh...
No point even engaging further.

^ This Disappointing, really.
ChiswickFlo · 16/03/2022 20:06

Yeah.

But also not. I save my disappointment for people that matter to me.

ChiswickFlo · 16/03/2022 20:07

Any of you watched viking valhalla?

It's madness but fun

pointythings · 16/03/2022 20:17

@Peregrina but Corbyn would have been worse!

There, done - now we don't need another of those for a bit. You're welcome.

Again, so pleased to see people can make such refined judgements about my motivations, seemingly disregarding everything I say.

I don't expect people on here to agree with me for one minute but the constant demands for explanations and then dismissal of them after they are offered is getting wearysome tbh.

HannibalHeyes · 17/03/2022 00:27

But you've let the mask slip in a previous thread. Xenophobia was the result.
