Ukraine has sent an urgent request to London that an airlift of cats and dogs be prioritised over planned visit by PM Johnson...

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 29/01/2022 20:44

I just watched Lord Sumption, Justice of the Supreme Court on last night's Newsnight. He said the report having to be redacted on the say so of the Met is legal nonsense, there is no legal justification for it at all. Government releases factual reports following investigations which could end up with police involvement all the time. And on issues way more important than a few fixed penalty notices for breaking covid rules. He cited the Hillsborough report as an example.

Presumably he has to go because Macron is. The difference being that Macron may actually be doing some useful diplomacy.

Morning all. I post very rarely but have found these threads invaluable over the past years.

I don't think this has been shared yet but it's a fantastic summary of how things stand and makes for a very sobering read.

Pmk.

Was just wondering, what with another Tory mp (Chope) saying the SG report should be published in full, adding to the voices we’ve already heard (Davis,May)

And..,

Sunak not backing down on the NI rises,

We might see a growing split starting to snowball in the Tory party? Or is that wishful thinking..

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 30/01/2022 12:19

Thanks, redavocado that does make a succinct and sobering summary. Depressing, isn't it?

TheABC · 30/01/2022 18:35

Johnson will eventually be booted out. The only question is if it will be done before or after the May elections. Part of me hopes for afterwards; let him cause as much damage as possible to the Tory party's electoral prospects.

I am wondering how you get rid of Dame Cressida. What's th process for firing a police commissioner?

DGRossetti · 30/01/2022 19:25

How can you get rid of someone who got promoted for turning an innocent mans head into tripe ?

Voodoo ?

It feels more productive than writing letters to my MP.

Can’t wait to see what EU laws that Westminster is aiming to jettison in their plan to get rid of “EU red tape"

They want to pretend to us that it’s those EU laws that have stopped ‘Global Britain’ and UK businesses from trading with the EU. Hoping that we’ll magically forget that it’s being a bloody ‘third country’ with its barriers to trade and border regs thats the problem, which will now never go away.

Not to mention that many of those EU regs upheld employment and customer rights as well as safety laws. I shudder to think of what will now be allowed. Safe to say that we’ll only find out after it’s a done deal.

And if they had planned for Brexit, this would have been the law they introduced 2 years ago. As it is there is still no indication of which EU regs might need changing.

Am I being cynical to conclude that this is just another part of Operation save big baby?

DrBlackbird · 31/01/2022 08:30

Feel free to give full rein to cynicism jgw1 Grin

The big baby’s team is working flat out trying to think of ways to not only save him right now, but to also divert our attention from the cluster f*&k of his entire premiership.

It’s pleasantly ironic in how he and Dom were such pals as the ultimate architects of Brexit, yet with the one now determined to take the other down. What does this say about that particular club?

Really none of those associated with the Brexit leadership (Johnson, Gove, JRSmug, Farage, Banks, Cummings, Hannan…the list can go on for some time) were/are nice people were they? Absolutely none of them. Yet we still vote them back into parliament. Well, some folks do.

DrBlackbird · 31/01/2022 08:38

From that BBC article, seems to me that this phrase could be applied to every aspect of Johnson’s government…

"A source said Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Irish ministers believe the plans undermine the devolution settlement. They added that a meeting between the Attorney General Suella Braverman and devolved ministers on Saturday was last-minute, fractious, and cack-handed .

DuncinToffee · 31/01/2022 08:47

Brexi Freedom Bill, yes definitely part of big baby rescue, another 3 word slogan.

prettybird · 31/01/2022 08:50

I know the Scottish Government is determined to retain as many of the EU laws as possible, to preserve the acquis communautaire , so as to reduce the time it will take to move from being an EU accession state to a member state Wink

Peregrina · 31/01/2022 10:44

It would be interesting to see what would happen if NI and RoI ever vote to re-unite. There is something of a precedent with W and E Germany reuniting, but in this case, both parts were in the EU and NI still is partly. So it shouldn't be too difficult.

Then Scottish Independence - as prettybird says - many laws are already EU laws, so again it should still be less difficult than the E & W Germany situation. Or indeed the Eastern Bloc states acceding.

An interesting future beckons - we just have to get rid of the current corrupt Government and get someone decent in.

DGRossetti · 31/01/2022 11:00

It would be interesting to see what would happen if NI and RoI ever vote to re-unite

Will the people of NI be sufficiently happy with their improved Brexit outcome compared to the rUK to risk it ?

And will the Tory government and media be able to scare the horses enough to prevent it ?

And will the RoI risk accepting into it's fold a population implacably opposed to it's very existence ?

It would be richly ironic if the vote for union was 52:48 in favour. Which I have no doubt it would be. Just to troll us.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 31/01/2022 11:40

SG's report has been delivered, per BBC.
