Only an update on her investigations, not the full report.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 31/01/2022 12:51

Well, it's a start. PM will address Commons at 15:30, and the report will be released to the public "later".

LouiseCollins28 · 31/01/2022 13:01

Lets see if it was worth the wait

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 31/01/2022 13:22

Don't hold your breath.

AuldAlliance · 31/01/2022 13:27

An in-house report by a non-independent civil servant?
Of course it won't be worth the wait. Or much else, for that matter.

TheElementsSong · 31/01/2022 14:01

Don't hold your breath.

Whilst waiting, this is a live tweet thread (live now) about the new UK government policy paper called "The Benefits of Brexit", which is somehow (?) 100 pages long....

Enjoy

I'm so pleased to see that Gove is calling for 'Christian forgiveness' over partygate. As a Christian I think this is absolutely the right path for the government and country to take. I think we should all get behind him on this.

Thing is in Christianity forgiveness isn't the get out of jail free card some people think it is. It has 3 very clear steps, which everyone will be familiar with even if they don't know it.

The first step to forgiveness is confession. You have to admit honestly and fully what you've done wrong. Making excuses, minimising or hiding behind redacted reports won't cut the mustard.

Second step is repentence. This means showing genuine remorse for your wrong doing and demonstrating that by turning away from the bad behaviour and going in a different direction. Showing through your own actions that you have changed, not by sacking others and using them as you whipping boy.

The third step is then forgiveness and follows on from the other two. Without the first two there can be no 'Christian forgiveness'

So yeah, confess, repent, forgiveness is good. Over to you De Spaffle ...

About Red Tape : Jonty Bloom says the following:

As I may have mentioned before, I am old enough to remember Lord Heseltine’s bonfire of red tape. In fact I made the effort 6 months after the speech to find out what red tape had been burnt. It was, if I. remember correctly, 7 pieces of legislation, 6 of which were trading with the enemy Acts from the first days of World War Two.

You get the nails, I'll bring the hammer, and all the families of people who died alone, in pain, in fear and in betrayal will bring the crosses.

Sounds about right to me.

Yep that'd be step 2. Part of showing remorse is acepting your punishment.

That's why Gove's suggestion is ignorant bollocks. He's equating Christian forgiveness with turning a blind eye and not holding Johnson to account when it actually means the complete opposite. No holds barred, fully accountable for your actions.

Crucifiction is too good for him.

I look forward* to the AoC "calling him out" on it.

*You can add that to the list of "things that never happen".

I have no problem with peoples personal beliefs and connection with their deities. I have no end of problems with the seething crocks of shit that are any form of organised religion.

How can I say that ?

Well for a start I have actually read the fucking bible (to which the correct response is "which one ?" ....)

HannibalHeyes · 31/01/2022 15:07

This Christian forgiveness thing works for me.

I'm an atheist...

Hardly fucking inclusive though is it. What about Islamic Forgiveness. Or Judean Forgiveness. Or Hindu Forgiveness ?

I think the Tory party have benefitted from white mans forgiveness for quite long enough, thank you.

I can't imagine the more intense Muslims I know being happy at one of their key prophets being invoked to take the curse off Boris either.

Opal8 · 31/01/2022 16:04

The silence from the tory benches is....interesting

I was raised Catholic (the irony, right?) 🤣

My understanding was that to gain forgiveness one must truly repent.

De Pfeffle is VERY sorry he was caught, no doubt. But I truly believe he has no understanding at all that he's done anything wrong.

I'm rather pleased to note that 2 of the parties allegedly being investigated by the MET took place the evening DC left No10 with his little cardboard box....

Carrrie's delight at getting rid of him may be their undoing....

BJ is only sorry about the "serious misjudgment" and says that "lessons need to be learned" as per the Sue Gray report and doesn't take any responsibility for anything that happened, instead throwing the Civil Service under a big red bus. AngryQuelle surprise Hmm

Ian Blackford was right to refuse to withdraw the point that he had misled Parliament, based on the PM's own statemens Confused - which resulted in Blackford having to leave the House before he was suspended.

AuldAlliance · 31/01/2022 16:21

Christ, PMQs is a pointless exercise when it involves BJ, isn't it?

HannibalHeyes · 31/01/2022 16:36

What a speech from Starmer!

DuncinToffee · 31/01/2022 17:02

Johnson's reply was vile

He knows it’s not true. He knows it’s a smear. He is advised in advance not to say it. He says it in Parliament anyway.

Wonder who will defend him on this

100problems · 31/01/2022 18:33

The old "lessons will be learned" trope again. As easy to trot out as "thoughts and prayers". Just empty words that mean the square root of fuck all.

What's the lying liar going to do to demonstrate having learned this lesson? Put the country in total lockdown again and not throw a string of parties?

The lesson is surely you don't break your own rules, you don't lie and if you do and you're caught having had a string of parties and found to be a liar you have to quit.

Opal8 · 31/01/2022 19:08

Polls looking grim for the tories...

That'll be what does for De Pfeffle.

The tories will dump him asap once he's no longer useful.
