UK government responds to post-Brexit concerns and of course it's all the fault of those pesky EU negotiators

'Incalculable cost' of non-participation in Horizon programme 'continues to rise'

...

More or less on Radio 4 has just done an interesting item on food prices for the lowest income groups with Jack Monroe.

I have a feeling that the economy growing will become for the Tories a bit like migrants contribute positively to the economy was for the Remain campaign. Whilst it might be true it will be so removed from the lives that many people are living that it will be irrelevant.

You forget that for a lot of people, the narrative that some - especially if they are foreign/disabled/"a bit funny" - are doing worse is all you need.

It's not enough to win, others must lose

"The EU's obstruction of the UK's association with Horizon remains,"

Unbelievable isn't it?

We chose to leave the EU, negotiated a very poor WA, then renegaded even on that BUT still expect to be in EU programs.

@Peregrina

Seems Cressida Dick has rescued Boris again

Few of us expected anything else.

Did anyone hear Mr can only speak with a sneering drawl JRM dismissing the idea that the Met have saved Johnson by removing parts of Grey’s report?

Makes me think that Eton must have a class on how to perfect the patronising gaslighting of anything a member of the politburo doesn’t like.

I got stuck when he said "its eccentric" and thought well he's an expert on that.

Peregrina · 29/01/2022 08:46

I read in last week's Guardian how JRM is from extremely humble stock on his mother's side.

prettybird · 29/01/2022 08:52

Ds asked his politics tutor this question this week (he couldn't make the tutorial as he'd tested positive for the first time and despite being triple vaccinated at Christmas Sad):

Another constitutional question to ask, although this may be a bit more opinionated, is recently the leader of the house, Jacob Rees-Mogg, said we have a presidential system. What are your thoughts on that? Is he just trying to scare his backbenchers into supporting Johnson or is there an element of truth to it as people do vote for the party and the leader not necessarily the party candidate standing in that constituency or is it just an effect of the electoral system we have?

This was the reply he got. I suspect that if it weren't in writing, his language would be even stronger Grin

Our full EU status is now as a turd country;

MP steps in human poo in layby on Brexshit fact-finding trip...

ancientgran · 29/01/2022 12:32

If we have a presidential system now then we should be able to vote for the president. I won't vote for my local Tory MP, who seems very nice and very annoyed with what has gone on in No 10, because I don't want Boris Johnson and his cronies running the country. With a truly presidential system I could vote for the best person locally without ending up with Johnson.

I read an interesting article by the Secret Barrister this morning on the position of the Met and the Sue Gray report. It said normally the police request details be kept quiet so it doesn't influence a potential jury. But in this case the offences are not ones that would ever come before a jury, so that justification is irrelevant. The only other justifaction is to keep witnesses and suspects in the dark so they don't influence each other's evidence, which is why the Sue Gray report is being held back. Which I found an odd conclusion because it's only being held back from the public. Those in Number 10 have seen it. So how is that justification valid?

I wonder if he's coming back waving a piece of paper and declaring peace in our time? Mixing up his wartime leaders would be just the thing for him.
DGRossetti · 29/01/2022 13:20

Shamelessly borrowed from a rather sarky exchange on Farcebook.

It is NOT Brexit red Tape. It's the result of becoming a third country with regards to trading into the bloc. We wrote the rules regarding this. It is more like "Normal red tape required to trade with the EU now that we are not members" but it doesn't scan so well.

Those in Number 10 have seen it.

I don't think they have seen it have they? Have I missed something?

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 29/01/2022 14:01

I meant that they will see it. Johnson is the ultimate decision maker on what gets published and when and who sees what. Not Sue Gray and not the Met. He will know exactly what it says before being questioned by the Met (assuming he can be arsed to stop partying long enough to read it). Therefore the notion of keeping it secret is null and void.

After reading the Secret Barrister article I was left with the impression that he was suggesting that the report would be kept under wraps (or supplied to Johnson ready-redacted) until after the investigation had been concluded.

As you say, it wouldn't make sense otherwise.

DGRossetti · 29/01/2022 17:17

Governments that try to keep their actions secret from their citizens (sorry, subjects, we are British after all),

Makes you wonder what's going to be going on in Priti Patels concentration camps. (Well you think of a better description).

Not quite sure this augurs well for a turbo charged relationship with a

Some genius thought ‘hey, I know how we can revive the Met’s sinking reputation and save the PM!’

Playing out differently than how it was envisioned but isn’t that par for the course for this cabinet…
