Brexit Megathread Part 3: COP26 and beyond. The Empire is no more.

The old thread is nearly full so as COP26 is in my home town, I thought I'd start the next one.

I'm not expecting anything wonderful from COP26. The selfishness that is Brexit will extend to the rich nations - or rather corporations, countries and cronies - not wanting to do anything that might actually cost them money or hurt their profits and having made their money on the back of the resources of the poorer nations (in some cases quite literally Sad), they'll expect them to pay the price for the riches of the West.

The deliberate mistranslation of France's letter to the EU will distract from real issues - but that's ok for BJ as he can then blame the perfidious French.

Nothing changes.

DGR and my MIL who is now 98, so was a young adult for part of the War, doesn't say that.

I am quoting someone who as you say was a child during the war, and would have been 11 when it finished. Who wasn't bombed out as far as I am aware, didn't lose a father during the war, so was relatively shielded from the worst of the horrors.

prettybird · 06/11/2021 08:39

My dad is 84. He was two when the war started Confused. The most he can remember is a vague recollection of war torn Europe when he visited from South Africa in the late 40s and they ended up being stuck in Denmark for longer than planned as they couldn't get a boat back.

My parents “managed” during the war (born 1912 and 1916).

They wouldn’t have wished that “managing” on anyone else. One of the joys of their later years was being able to visit European countries that were prosperous, at peace and welcoming. They’d be appalled to see the state we’re in today.

Who knew 25 years ago that I'd end up liking Michael Heseltine...

Interesting but not surprising perspective on Global Britain by Alastair Carmichael. I was particularly interested in his comments about the German view of Merkel.

It's depressing, isn't it? 2012 was so optimistic, 2021 certainly doesn't feel the same.

prettybird · 07/11/2021 15:37

I think I and others Indy supporters are amongst the few to see some hope Wink

But it's certainly not the route I would've chosen Sad

I'm not sure I'd go that far.

Even more alarmingly I seem to agree with Tobias Ellwood.

Notice the new narrative. It's Brexiteers that are the good guys now. Not those nasty Remainers who clearly don't care as much about UK farming as real patriots.

If only there was some kind of union or community of our neighbours that would be willing to share our farming standards with us...

30 MPs consultancy earnings
Some eye watering amounts for bugger all time - why is this not dodgy?

prettybird · 07/11/2021 22:53

All these costs and the EU:GB border is still not deemed by the NAO to be sustainable. And the UK is potentially open to challenge as it's not fully implementing checks.

Remind me again what the benefits were supposed to be? Confused

Official estimates from the Office for Budget Responsibility point to a Brexit loss of more than £1,250 per person over the coming years – more than 178 times the most optimistic prediction for the benefits from the new trade deals Seems that our new trade deals will jointly have an economic benefit of adding 0.01 to 0.02 per cent of GDP over the next 15 years vs 4% loss of GDP from the economic hit from leaving the EU over the same period.

Well there we go… Brexit was obviously all worth it.

So an emergency parliamentary debate apparently today wrt on standards and the ‘Paterson Affair’. Talk of banning consultancy work.

I was initially concerned that such a ban would leave us with only the uber wealthy running for parliament and that what’s needed is a more stringent review process. However, the fact that it is 28 conservative MPs out of the 30 MPs potentially affected by such a ruling leads me to wonder if I’m being naive here.

Or get voted out and a peerage is yours.

Chris Grey's blogspot on Paterson's role in Brexit.

Quite a key one, as you can see. But Leading Brexiter Disgraced hasn't been the headline.

I am getting really nervous that they are actually going to trigger Article 16 and go for No Deal.
