Brexit Megathread Part 3: COP26 and beyond. The Empire is no more.

The old thread is nearly full so as COP26 is in my home town, I thought I'd start the next one.

I'm not expecting anything wonderful from COP26. The selfishness that is Brexit will extend to the rich nations - or rather corporations, countries and cronies - not wanting to do anything that might actually cost them money or hurt their profits and having made their money on the back of the resources of the poorer nations (in some cases quite literally Sad), they'll expect them to pay the price for the riches of the West.

The deliberate mistranslation of France's letter to the EU will distract from real issues - but that's ok for BJ as he can then blame the perfidious French.

Nothing changes.

Part of the thing with No Deal was that the other countries were going to come running in to do Trade Deals. The biggy with the USA is on hold for at least a couple of years.

FatCatThinCat · 08/11/2021 10:40

I'm getting really pissed off with the narative that MPs need to do consultancy work because their pay is so low and only rich people would be able to do the job otherwise. Their pay is beyond what most people could ever dream of. How dare they make out that they're church mice. At the height of my working life, when I was full time, I earnt £14,500 pa. And they're bleating about only getting £80,000 plus expenses/second homes. Fuck off!

Peregrina · 08/11/2021 10:47

FatCat - we must assume then that Tory MPs are paid less than the others, because 28 out of the 30 were Tories.
Paterson himself will be able to earn a comfortable living from his Consultancies.

FatCatThinCat · 08/11/2021 10:50

It's just greed. They're already getting more than most can dream of and they want more and are prepared to lie and cheat to get it.

FatCatThinCat · 08/11/2021 10:56

I read a legal blog the other day that said the narrative around triggering article 16 is completely false and is being nurtured to keep the gammonati riled. Article 16 does not end the NI protocol as we're being led to believe. All is does it trigger the formal dispute resolution process. It only allows for the suspension of rules in a specific area, for a specific problem, for a limited time period (while the problem is fixed). It does not allow for the suspension of everything for forever.

Peregrina · 08/11/2021 12:10

It does not allow for the suspension of everything for forever.

But it plays to the Nasty EU bullying us. Will it take the public's mind off the Tory Corruption?

I think there is very much the question of any US response if the UK goes rogue. I suspect their list of allies goes something like:

Ireland
EU
UK

in that order.

And Boris won't win any friends for kicking up a shitstorm when POTUS would rather concentrate on domestic matters.

Just seen that De Spaffle and Rees+Smug are refusing to attend the emergency tory corruption debate in Parliament today. Nothing says 'We don't give a shit' like not giving a shit.

Typical Mr Johnson - leading from the back.

They’ve got quite the eye for the optics, haven’t they? WTF sort of message do they think they’re sending? (That’s a rhetorical question. They know full well what message they’re sending.)

Best for Britain tweeted

On a side note, Johnson says he could not attend the Commons debate, because of a “longstanding commitment in Northumberland” - of which neither the journalist pool nor his cabinet colleagues knew. Trevelyan said this morning he’d be “in his office watching it on tv”. 🤨 ~AA

I so wish I had the words conveying how truly revolting these two are I have never voted Tory, but I did mostly respect a lot of the those who represented them in parliament previously, such disrespect is sickening but sadly wholly expected I am utterly depressed today.

Word of the day (again) is ‘catchfart’ (17th century): a follower of the political wind; one whose actions are guided entirely by the whims and desires of their boss.

As John Major said:

"We are the masters now"

and he wasn't happy.

FrankieStein403 · 08/11/2021 15:30

yaay we ought to be able to introduce import controls by Sept 22.
On the other hand - given the track record to date a further 6 month delay wouldn't be surprising.

borntobequiet · 08/11/2021 15:46

When things start to go seriously wrong for Tory PMs don’t they unravel very quickly?

It would be so nice to think this was one of those pivotal moments. OTOH what/ who are the alternatives?

LouiseCollins28 · 08/11/2021 15:58

It'll be interesting to see if this sentiment continues to stay high or starts going away again. I think the Paterson case has been appallingly handled but I'd love to know how much this is a "bubble" story and how much is real cut through.

Interesting to me that there is sooo much more media attention on Owen Paterson and not on Claudia Webbe who's level of offence is of a different order entirely IMO.

My take on that is that the BBC and other media are just desperate to damage Boris any way they can and trying to make it into a pivotal "moment", they may well succeed.

Alternatives? Alternative Conservative leaders do you mean?

DuncinToffee · 08/11/2021 16:08

Corruption in now a 'bubble' story?

Starmer on Webbe

"When Claudia Webbe was charged the Labour Party suspended her," he said.
"When she was then convicted, we didn't argue with the conviction, we expelled her from the Labour Party.
"We now say she she should resign and we would support a recall petition."

FatCatThinCat · 08/11/2021 16:11

Not sure how the Claudia Webbe case is relevant. Have the media failed to report on the labour party backing her fully and then trying to overturn the conviction? Has Keir Starmer been whipping labour MPs to over throw parliamentary processes to save her? Or is it just a case of 'look a squirrel'?

wewereliars · 08/11/2021 16:11

Claudia Webbe has been thrown out of the labour party and Starmer has called for her to resign, not promised her a peerage. So what point do you think you are making Louise Collins?

wewereliars · 08/11/2021 16:15

Tories just do not know the difference between right and wrong apparently,

LouiseCollins28 · 08/11/2021 16:20

My point as I made very clear was about media attention. What Starmer has done is of no consequence now as you, rightly, point out Webbe isn't currently a Labour MP.

borntobequiet · 08/11/2021 16:21

That’s a pretty weird take on an episode that’s being seen as appalling by so many Conservative MPs both of the old guard and the new.

FatCatThinCat · 08/11/2021 16:27

The media aren't damaging Johnson, his behaviour and lack of integrity are.

wewereliars · 08/11/2021 16:29

If only it were true that the mainstream media would call out Johnson for the corrupt liar he is Louise Collins, the country may not be falling into the abyss if they had done.
