Brexit Megathread Part 3: COP26 and beyond. The Empire is no more.

The old thread is nearly full so as COP26 is in my home town, I thought I'd start the next one.

I'm not expecting anything wonderful from COP26. The selfishness that is Brexit will extend to the rich nations - or rather corporations, countries and cronies - not wanting to do anything that might actually cost them money or hurt their profits and having made their money on the back of the resources of the poorer nations (in some cases quite literally Sad), they'll expect them to pay the price for the riches of the West.

The deliberate mistranslation of France's letter to the EU will distract from real issues - but that's ok for BJ as he can then blame the perfidious French.

Nothing changes.
@jgw1 You re just like that guy i see on FB "Daly Male" lol!

Johnson won't resign, he is loving it, even if he lost the next GE, he would try and get the result overturned.
He won't lose the next election, don't worry about that. His popularity will know no boundaries by then, when he has got Brexit done, built back Boris and levelled uperything.

Ah, I used to like Dale Maily on twitter, but he doesn't seem to have posted for a while...

also a warm shout to Barbados who are ditching the useless monarchy. It can be done.

borntobequiet · 29/11/2021 09:47

Thanks for that link, DGR. A Dance to the Music of Time is now on my list to reread over the winter months. I was wondering what reading material would get me through the long haul to March.

pointythings · 29/11/2021 10:26

DGR I'm actually not hopeful at all. For things to change, English exceptionalism has to die. I don't see that happening any time soon.

Oh I'm not either. The old adage about being careful what you wish for applies as ever.

I'm on record as saying I'd accept Brexit if it finished off the Tories. However what will replace them ? Worse than nurse ?

Apropos Barbados.
Interesting article in the Spectator regarding Chinese influence over Commonwealth armies, the provision of officer training in China and the funding of military initiatives incumbent upon the provision of facilities promoting the Chinese Belt and Road strategy.
There has been some domestic criticism within Barbados that the split from the Crown has been rushed through with little opportunity to argue against such a move.
However, the article points out that this rush to Republicanism does come after decades of neglect from the UK.
I'm certainly not against the split from the Crown, but would rather it wasn't to the benefit of Chinese influence in the region.

So TL;DR - now is not the time to leave an organisation that works together for the common good I can't imagine what on earth could have got into Barbadoinian minds.

Well, it's good to see Ireland is benefiting from a Brexit bonus, given all the crap they are having to deal with over the NI border arrangements.

Just goes to show what a great nation we can be without the yoke of the European Union.

I was in London over the weekend. The nearest I got to Westminster was Victoria station and even from there I swear I could hear the sound of carborundum on steel.
Peregrina · 30/11/2021 09:54

Let us pray for two by election successes this week - i.e. Tory losses and then we might hear this sound even louder.

(Are we now writing cryptic crossword clues?)

(Are we now writing cryptic crossword clues?)

There are 3 by-elections coming up that will be contested isn't there?

I'm afraid the Tories will win all 3.

The new variant has taken the focus off BJ's many failings, he is, after all, "doing his best"

Peregrina · 30/11/2021 10:36

I thought one is still under dispute - the person concerned hasn't yet been subject to a recall petition?

As for the two contested ones - yes, I suspect the Tories will win again with a reduced vote, but a vote of one more than the opposition is still a win, and will be 'overwhelming' in Tory parlance.

Johnson has the devil's luck - a new variant comes along just in time to scupper the by election news.

DuncinToffee · 30/11/2021 12:22

Another poll, this time from party members.

Top is worrying

Brexit Megathread Part 3: COP26 and beyond. The Empire is no more.
DGRossetti · 30/11/2021 13:05

I think we can ignore the by elections. After all the Tories will have to

The SOP is "these are always a popularity poll on the present government"/can't take too seriously/the only poll that matters is the general election.

So win, lose or draw, the Tories are condemned to grey-stone ...

Octavia174 · 30/11/2021 14:06

True if they lose, they can bat the losses away but if they win, then that is surely a sign that BJ, despite his many woes, is in good fettle to win the next GE, which may even be as early as next year.

It's tempting to vote Tory just to fool the party into keeping BJ.

Never underestimate the scope for mischief that can be played with our Putin-approved electoral system
