Brexit

Brexit Megathread Part 3: COP26 and beyond. The Empire is no more.

The old thread is nearly full so as COP26 is in my home town, I thought I'd start the next one.

I'm not expecting anything wonderful from COP26. The selfishness that is Brexit will extend to the rich nations - or rather corporations, countries and cronies - not wanting to do anything that might actually cost them money or hurt their profits and having made their money on the back of the resources of the poorer nations (in some cases quite literally Sad), they'll expect them to pay the price for the riches of the West.

The deliberate mistranslation of France's letter to the EU will distract from real issues - but that's ok for BJ as he can then blame the perfidious French.

Nothing changes.

@FrankieStein403

30 MPs consultancy earnings Some eye watering amounts for bugger all time - why is this not dodgy?
And one I know not even on there. Something to do with his 'deals being done' on a yacht , so not under any jurisdiction as he was off shore.

Will resign but peerage guaranteed.

@Peregrina

Just what, exactly, do they teach them at Eton...

Good question. How to be effortlessly arrogant.

I think it was already in him - remember that BCF post?

BigChocFrenzy Tue 25-Jun-19 20:20:48

BJ’s Eton housemaster, Martin Hammond, in 1982 school report:
“I think he honestly believes it is churlish of us not to regard him as an exception, one who should be free of the network of obligation which binds everyone else.”

DrBlackbird · 13/11/2021 17:26

Yes Peregrina that’s my understanding. His outraged entitlement is breathtaking. Paterson seemed similar. Both reminded me of Brett Kavanaugh’s narcissistic rage response to being accused.

DoctorTwo · 13/11/2021 19:52

Boris is exceptional: exceptionally lazy, venal and corrupt. This government is so corrupt the Nigerians are asking hoow they get away with it. Can't wait till they're voted out and have to stand in front of a jury.

LadyZoom · 13/11/2021 20:42

Boris Johnson is sooo bored with the Premiership already, yawn.

LadyZoom · 13/11/2021 20:45

I'm not talking about football but his role as PM!

Peregrina · 13/11/2021 23:35

He doesn't understand the first thing about football. Wasn't he burbling about a score of 5:2 going to extra time? Try to get him to explain the offside rule!

But as I mentioned, the downward trend of British retiring in Spain is not "only" due to Brexit. The downward spiral started after 2010 when living standards in the UK declined while the rest of Europe, including Spain, raised. .

What an earth happened in 2010 to course this?

Apologies for not answering this earlier. 2009-2010 is according to Spanish stats when British purchases in Spain accounted for over 30% of the foreign market. Right now is under 10%, a decline that has accelerated with Brexit but begun after 2010.

My opinion is similar to what Prettybird said, Spain begun the economic recovery after the the GFC with salaries, pensions and basics like food, entertainment and housing raising in prices while the average UK retiree income remained the same, making it too expensive for many British to retire in Spain like they did before.

Well it is might unfair of those foreigners to raise prices. What on earth were they thinking.

True, how they dare raising their living standards? Grin

More negative perceptions and consequences resulting from the perfect storm of Covid, Brexit and government decisions.

Oh to see us as others see us and not to ignore or deny what they see

...
Previously, when the UK was part of the EU, under a mechanism known as Dublin the UK could ask other EU countries to take back people they could prove had passed through safe European countries before reaching the UK.

The UK could make “take charge” requests and officials were often able to prove that asylum seekers had passed through other countries thanks to the Eurodac fingerprint database.

But since Brexit the UK no longer has access to that database, so it is harder to prove definitively which other European countries small boat arrivals to the UK have previously passed through.

(contd)
...

I noted long before the "deal" that if I were a terrorist organisation, I know how I'd sneak my agents into the UK. Hell, I would even need to actually do it. Just suggesting it would have the desired effect.

jgw1 · 14/11/2021 10:33

True, how they dare raising their living standards?

This is the trouble with foreigners. They did not know that everything had to be cut in the name of austerity.

DGRossetti · 14/11/2021 10:47

How will the accession of King Charles affect the course of Brexit ?

I'm guessing having discovered how supine the Monarchy "has" to be, Boris will waste no time in neutering the last semblance of oversight "the Crown" has in English politics. Scotland might choose this moment to contemplate republicanism ? And of course the unification of Ireland would demand it.

Clearly, these are the interesting times the enemies of our forebears wished upon us.

borntobequiet · 14/11/2021 11:00

How will the accession of King Charles affect the course of Brexit ?

We’ve seen Johnson tear up the rule book, constraints not appearing to work. Might Charles III (or whatever he styles himself) have a go at doing the same? A latter-day civil (cultural) war in the making?

'Plague island'

Well I never. Additionally much of the competence in the hospitality industry was supplied by immigrant labour. I used to live in a tourist honeypot and the difference between the attentive, courteous and competent service demonstrated by European staff showed up the rude, dismissive incompetence of the locals, who often liked to give the impression that they were demeaning themselves in some way in order to provide visitors with a panini and a latte.

In the CNN article it's interesting to note that it differentiates the behaviour and policies of the English with those of Scotland, Wales and NI, but observes that it is the boorish behaviour of our PM, representing the not very United Kingdom that gets beamed around the world Angry

Remember de Spaffles' unmasked visit to the hospital?

Here's how the locals felt about it...

de pfeffel wanted to be her accelerator'/'footstool'
not sure it's a good idea to have Premier who wants to be stamped/stood on. On the other hand I might wish someone would.

Always a good idea to cite your source! HanibalHayeski...

Not the recent hospital visit with the mask controversy, this one was 2 years ago. If anyone's interested here's the source material

Peregrina · 14/11/2021 13:34

If you read that post, the medic writing it does not say that it was deSpaffles latest visit. The date clearly shows that it was one of his pre-election stunts, but that in no way detracts from the substance of the article.

wewereliars · 14/11/2021 13:38

Louise collins oh that's fine then, he's great after all, FFS.

Sound of barrels being scraped

jgw1 · 14/11/2021 13:41

True. Another example of EU bullying.

I remember well being repeatedly told in the run up to 2016 that austerity was a result of us having to stick to EU rules....
