Brexit Megathread Part 3: COP26 and beyond. The Empire is no more.

The old thread is nearly full so as COP26 is in my home town, I thought I'd start the next one.

I'm not expecting anything wonderful from COP26. The selfishness that is Brexit will extend to the rich nations - or rather corporations, countries and cronies - not wanting to do anything that might actually cost them money or hurt their profits and having made their money on the back of the resources of the poorer nations (in some cases quite literally Sad), they'll expect them to pay the price for the riches of the West.

The deliberate mistranslation of France's letter to the EU will distract from real issues - but that's ok for BJ as he can then blame the perfidious French.

Nothing changes.

I think it is both, they can't be bothered and they think no one will notice anyway. They are used to getting away with it.

Paywalled, but Geoffrey Cox suggesting that MPs shouldn't have to declare their outside earnings.

"If the voters don't know about it, they can't complain about it" says Geoffrey 'I said the quiet part loud and the loud part quiet' Cox

Version without paywall

Nice to see they've got their post-Brexshit priorities in order once again;

Conservative peer calls for shortage of au pairs to be fixed by special Brexit rules...

jgw1 · 10/11/2021 14:55

@HannibalHayeski

Well Geoffrey Cox is correct it is completely frivolous to be complaining that someone who is worth paying 34 times the average full time salary in his constituency for a part time job, is not capable of doing that and his constituency work to the highest possible standard. If only his constituents were as clever and hard working as him it wouldn't take them most of a year to earn what he does in a month.

[quote DuncinToffee]US issues warning on N.I protocol

Pretty much inevitable. Remember to be a Brexiteer you need to be deaf to all voices that don't support your POV. Which means at some point you will prod the dozing giant that is the US.

Just as (some) UK politicians are quite happy to use external events to advance their own agenda, it would be amazing if the same were not true in the US.

In this case parties seeking to use tensions in NI to advance their own agenda.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 10/11/2021 15:54

Hannibal wouldn't mind if they could also fix it so young people can also take advantage of the Erasmus scheme. I suspect that's a step too far though doesn't affect Tory peers to the same extent

DuncinToffee · 10/11/2021 16:01

DGR according to Nick Tolhurst

Lord Frost changed his speech on triggering article 16 on Northern Ireland after calls with Boris Johnson and communication and “direct intervention” from the US govt.

wewereliars · 10/11/2021 16:08

About time someone put these self serving idiotic twats in their place.

The UK is of no global import now, so they had better get used to it.

prettybird · 10/11/2021 16:20

The House Foreign Affairs Committee: "In threatening to invoke Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol, the United Kingdom threatens to not only destabilize trade relations, but also that hard earned peace. We call on the UK to abandon this dangerous path, and to commit to implementing the Northern Ireland Protocol in full.”

The gloves are off.

And even if Trump or another Republican succeeded Biden, there is still a strong Irish lobby in the US, so Frostie and Co do need to watch their step.

@Peregrina

And US politicians will jostle with each other to build themselves up by knocking their old oppressor down.

There may yet be the disintegration of the Tory party as the hardcore Brexiteers refuse to accept any suggestion of US pressure on the one side, while the less bonkers ("old-school" Tories) on the other side pile on pressure to stay onside with the US.

There's also the obvious fact that the more BrexitSceptic in the EU will be pissing themselves with this news.

“Government 'replaces' Cornwall's EU £100m with just £1 million.”

So by voting for Brexit Cornwall have lost £ 99 million in funding !

prettybird · 10/11/2021 17:57

So much for "levelling up" Hmm

Although I'm sure there will be some sort of hidden environmental reason that this is a good thing and that the UK Government has Cornwall's best interests at heart and Cornwall is just being obtuse in not seeing it it (after all, the British fish are now happy fish Wink)

One can hope. But maybe the events of the last few days has shown that public opinion can turn against them pretty quickly. It’s a good thing this has all been exposed and their entitlement is rattled.

HannibalHayeski · 10/11/2021 19:15

Geoffrey Cox making himself ever more popular to the average tax payer;

Geoffrey Cox has received more than £800,000 for his work at Withers LLP, a law firm that helps multinational companies to sue nations for introducing any measures that harm their profits...

HannibalHayeski · 10/11/2021 19:18

Funny how you never hear of the "TaxPayers' Alliance" complaining about any of this. It's almost like they don't really care about the average taxpayer...

Whatever happened to the hordes of Spaniards who needed Brits abroad.

There's a certain pleasure in gammons not being irreplaceable.
