Do you want market forces or don't you?

Markets are wonderful at making the rich richer.
And when they dont work it is necessary for the poor to pay to sort out the mess.
That is market forces.

rrhuth · 10/10/2021 08:08

Brexit market forces rearing their head here, the stupid UK kite mark thing is rearing its head in the field of medical supplies: twitter.com/ShaunLintern/status/1447092523978170369

This is all so depressing, given it was predicted.

The question really is which of Boris' mates benefit from these persistent shortages.
DrBlackbird · 10/10/2021 08:49

Depressing and frightening. Whilst conveying zero ability to imagine the lives of others (theory of mind), the ‘I’m alright’ attitude carries an individual so far. One day you need a hospital for whatever reason and it’s out of stock for something needed to treat or cure you.

However, even then, it’s likely that the Beleaver will insist all is perfect.

rrhuth · 10/10/2021 09:06

Also the impact of difficulties getting stocks etc - all effort diverted from treating patients and making improvements - NHS willl need to invest more staff time and money into basic activities like sourcing supplies.

DrBlackbird · 10/10/2021 10:03

I must be miserable here in the UK and regretting my vote

As said previously, we are all quite capable of simultaneously enjoying our lives (if lucky enough), whilst being angry about an incompetent and uncaring govt actively harming its citizens and feeling sorry for those directly affected.

No one is telling you to be miserable. Assuming that is rather self referential. And you’ve told us clearly that not only do you not regret your vote, but that you’d vote Leave again even knowing what you know now i.e. the effects of being out of the SM/CU.

That’s all very clear thank you.

The international trolling continues

www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/former-pm-of-finland-says-eu-must-be-ready-to-send-aid-to-brexit-britain-294494/

The problem for Boris and his band here, is that Finland (as exemplified by the "Very Finnish Problem" FB page I stumbled across years ago*) seems to be a highly respected country in the world.

Meanwhile, in possibly less than welcome news for some, Mrs DGR and I have decided we only need to shop once every 2 weeks.

*Possibly the best was one that "Angry People in Local Newspapers" linked me to called Forze dell'ordine che indicano alla telecamera il luogo del misfatto

HannibalHayeski · 10/10/2021 14:21

Ah, so now Frosty the Noman is trying to pick a fight with the EU. I guess the only thing this government has to appeal to it's support is to keep picking fights with someone.

This, combined with Quasi Kwarteng telling Marr that we can solve our energy crisis by getting a better supply from France while the rest of the government is doing everything they can to wind them up. I guess it'll let them blame the French when the lights go out.

borntobequiet · 10/10/2021 14:29

I think this government appoints ministers to ministries they think unimportant (so most ministries) and then keep them out of the loop so they have to got a clue what the inner circle is thinking or planning, hence they appear on such programmes and say something that is immediately contradicted from on high. So as well as gaslighting the populace, they’re gaslighting each other, sort of.

Which is all jolly japes until someone loses an eye ...

But I hear now that Johnson and Priti Patel are having a spat. This could not happen between two more unpleasant people.

Then Johnson has cleared off on holiday again - he hasn't had a foreign holiday for 21 months. Boo hoo, neither have a good many people with Covid restricting travel.

DGRossetti · 10/10/2021 15:01

But I hear now that Johnson and Priti Patel are having a spat.

Has he accused her of looking like a letter box ?

mavisgreen · 10/10/2021 15:40

@vera99

I missed the 1991 Victoria Station bombing by 5 minutes and heard and felt the explosion. But as you bring up Irish terrorism I regard the greatest victory of my life as the Good Friday Agreement and peace that it brought to that troubled isle something I had believed to be impossible.

The fact that Brexit has called that into doubt is reason enough alone to revile it. Maybe the social control and firm hand of the autocracy of a country like China would be more to your tastes Problem is it's full of foreigners and 'slitty eyed' ones according to our late great Duke.

Northern Irish terrorism not Irish terrorism! Northern Ireland is part of the UK.
julieca · 10/10/2021 17:22

Ireland is going to unite. I don't see any other way this will go. Then Scotland will go.

DGRossetti · 10/10/2021 17:36

@julieca

Ireland is going to unite. I don't see any other way this will go. Then Scotland will go.
And it's something the wiser heads will start planning for now. Luckily there will be a lot of good - and practical advice from Irelands friends in the EU (and further afield) on the best way forwards.

It would be an interesting exercise compared to German reunification.

What would happen to Irish citizens and the 1921 UK-Irish treaty in the event of unification ? Could it still apply ?

julieca · 10/10/2021 17:42

@DGRossetti I don't know enough about the details of the 1921 treaty to know if parts would need renegotiating. But the central part of making Ireland an independent country would remain. Simply the definition of Ireland would change.
The key is to get most citizens behind it. Without that then terrorism could again be a major issue.
Biden will be very invested in this being done well and won't care a fig about England.

julieca · 10/10/2021 17:44

Gibraltar will also become part of Spain.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 10/10/2021 17:48

@julieca

Gibraltar will also become part of Spain.
Not if Gibraltar gets a say in it! Grin
julieca · 10/10/2021 17:55

I don't think the British government give a damn what the people of Gibraltar think. The only thing they would listen to is an uproar from Tory voters.

I know you will all join me in welcoming Boris and Carrie happy holidays. the video is a Mumsnet exclusive... I had to hunt it down.

Heart says Irish unification. Head says, who on earth would want to take NI on? Any form of unification would have to be very heavily underpinned by the US, with goodness knows how much in bribes to keep the DUP/UUP and paramilitaries on side.

wewereliars · 10/10/2021 20:31

Hard to know what to say TBH Vera.

I am beginning to think a news fast is needed, it's not doing my bloood pressure any good. May be better not to know?!

I imagine a Russian gas oligarch as a thank you for helping with the price rises we are all enjoying.

Peregrina · 11/10/2021 07:44

Zak Goldsmith's villa apparently. I.e. Johnson is scrounging off an unelected Lord, who was kicked out of the Commons by the electorate.

What was that the Brexiters used to whinge about being Governed by people who were unelected?
