Brexit Megathread - Part 1 because it's not over by a long shot

Started a new thread for all things Brexity as the last generic dumping ground reached its 1000 post limit. As this developing shitshow unfolds it's going to be important to share and unload. Clav of course will punt a contrarian view along with unrepentant 'taking back control' so-called Brexiteers. I look forward to seeing the benefits.

@HarrisonStickle

I live in a farming heavy part of England. Item on local BBC radio this morning about farmers and how angry and disappointed they are about what Johnson has said about the industry. Particularly the part about animals going to die anyway, so what was the problem.
Are these the same farmers that couldn't get enough of Brexit before the vote ?
rrhuth · 06/10/2021 15:21

Think about 40% of farmers voted remain?

Would be different now I suspect.

rrhuth · 06/10/2021 15:22

That is based on something I'm dimly recalling, rather than extensive research btw!

The boss of Next saying overseas workers only way to solve shortages

Hell mend him for having supported the Leave Campaign. Hmm

I no longer shop at Next Wink

DGRossetti · 06/10/2021 16:24

I have to hand it to Boris. By allowing the Leave voters to accept the mantle of xenophobic racists, he's found a way to push Tory Brexit to fuck all resistance.

Peregrina · 06/10/2021 16:27

Yes, I read the boss of Next's suggestions yesterday. They are not bad ideas I thought, but then thought 'Wait, you are a Tory Lord, so sit in Parliament. What in the last eleven years, when your Government was in power, stopped you putting forward your suggestions then?'

It's a matter of serious debate as to how many Lords know where Westminster is at all.

The similarity to the "ghost jobs" the US mafia used to give to mobsters is too close for comfort.

HannibalHayeski · 06/10/2021 17:37

The boss of Next who campaigned for Brexshit and lost me as a customer asking for visas for staff.
The boss of Wetherspoons who campaigned for Brexshit and lost me as a customer, not that I was a regular asking for visas for staff.

Anyone noticing a pattern here?

Peregrina · 06/10/2021 17:45

I notice that the Boss of Next was getting his arse handed to him in the comments - like pay your staff properly.

Johnson''s speech dissected for porkies.

@vera99's link suggests that most farmers in the NW voted remain.

I do know that, at the time, it wasn't cut and dried Brexit full support here from farmers.

vera99 · 06/10/2021 18:58

My takeaway from his 45 minute turn is ;

there is no plan
frame any hardships from random consequences of no plan as the plan
blame the Eu
lie , mention Corbyn
Churchill
lie again
exeunt stage right
job done.

FT analysis on that when Boris Johnson said “fuck business”, he really meant it

Johnson is a useless narcisstic haystack, he will implode sooner or later.

The real issue is how weak this country is in terms of being wrecked and pillaged by a bunch of gangsters, funded by shady criminals, seemingly without any hindrance or consequence and in plain sight.

The country and its citizens seem to have no protection from this.

I feel like I am watching a Saxon pillage in real time.

I can't see any way out at the moment.

Brindle88 · 06/10/2021 19:29

@wewereliars I really feel the same way. I’m so angry and upset at what is happening that I wish I were in a position to leave the country and live abroad.

vera99 · 06/10/2021 19:31

@wewereliars - it's bleak, isn't it? For some, these are no doubt desperate and tragic times as well. Even local FB groups (I'm in 3 don't ask) keep away from the B-word when discussing fuel shortages or empty shelves. They are clever buggers these tories and it's looking like an economic depression may awaken folk up or it may push them further rightwards.

This cheered me up today - communities uniting around each other and offering support - I should get off the internet and do something locally other than just helping my neighbours and family and fighting the battle on Twitter!

I realised today watching some of the interviews just how much I dislike Rishi, he comes across as smug and arrogant. Covid disguised some of this over the last year and half, now they’re emerging from the shadows it’s clear just how vile they are.

DGRossetti · 06/10/2021 19:40

I do know that, at the time, it wasn't cut and dried Brexit full support here from farmers.

If farmers themselves were remainers (and I have my doubts) then the fact so many rural communities seemed to vote against their interests means they are surrounded by people who clearly don't really think much of them.
wewereliars · 06/10/2021 19:41

Yes, they are vile, the whole self serving lot.

What they are genius at is turning people against each other , which lets them off the hook. I am hoping this sleight has a shelf life.

Maybe this is the quiet before the storm and revolution is on the way, people seem to be dazed at the moment.

We need anger, we are going to have to save ourselves, the mainstream media is nothing but government, propaganda and bread and circuses and the opposition is AWOL.

DGRossetti · 06/10/2021 19:42

I dislike Rishi, he comes across as smug and arrogant

because he is.

vera99 · 06/10/2021 19:44

They are all vile now it's part of the job description. Johnson's Brexit putsch got rid of whole swathes of talented good one nation tories. Nadine Dorries is culture secretary FFS. In what universe is that even possible?

Cold War Steve's quick take on the speech....
