Because there doesn't seem to be a new thread yet. I'm no RTB or any of you other experts, but these threads need to keep going.

Give me a couple weeks and I'll be able to post cat placemarks!

And it was all going so well

"85% of specialist UK hauliers are considering setting up in the EU," says Kash Bennett, due to the new cabotage rules. Otherwise they would lose the business as soon as the production moves from the UK to an EU country.

HannibalHayeski · 24/06/2021 13:03

Nice one from Chris Patten;

“the problem at heart is not the sausages you get from Sainsbury’s but the porkies that we all get, home and abroad, from Downing Street.”

LouiseCollins28 · 24/06/2021 13:15

On the House of Lords being a repository for 'failed' politicians (i.e. those rejected by the electorate) I agree with Peregrina.

I do think there is value in elevating to the Lords people who are experts at various things but who would never stand for an election. Whitty and Vallance being 2 topical potential examples but putting people who've been rejected by the electorate in there is not right IMO,

More winning;

Brexit ‘cost UK research £1.5bn’

I'm glad you agree. However, most Brexshittiers have been forever howling about "unelected bureaucrats" from the EU, despite the fact that they could vote for them, and give nary a whimper about the HoL.

I guess that's down to the majority merely parroting what their favourite source of propaganda has told them.

And let's face it, most of the leading Brexshittiers are either already in the HoL, or are looking forward to being in the future.

So...
Deaths outnumber births for the 1st time since 1976 (remember the 70s?? Good times!)
I imagine this trend will continue.
Add in a young economic diaspora and bingo...
Country full of old white brexshitters
Job done ✔

Yep and the uk fertility rate is at its lowest for decades, 1.6, which is similar to some Asian countries.

A little publicised report a week or so ago, had the UK's excess deaths, over 12months (feb 20 to feb 21) as the 2nd highest in the world.

Fnib · 24/06/2021 18:41

I'm a bit conflicted about dropping birth rates. On the one hand, I see climate change caused in part by overpopulation. On the other, it's evident that as a population ages, there is a need for up and coming youngsters to not only provide care, but to pay tax, boost economy and such.
Causes of lowering birthrate? Off the top of my head only, I'd say the biggest are the costs of bringing up children/house prices/childcare, plus environmental concerns. Also possibly the explosion of mental health issues.
I don't know what the answer is. Anti feminists a couple of generations ago predicted that the opportunities that women were fighting for would lead to women having to work. Is there a case for women to be financially supported when their children are pre school age? Would it be more or less expensive than putting money into providing childcare?

Mrs08 · 24/06/2021 18:46

It's amazing how many people think that there is a pot of money worth their name on work all the contributions they have paid during their lives.
Because they aren't taught about taxes/pensions etc at school.
I wonder if a lot of brexshitters understand that when if the young leave there won't be taxes to pay for their state pensions/ social care/NHS?
Quite eye opening.

HannibalHayeski · 24/06/2021 19:22

Newsthump brilliant as ever;

Proud Brexit supporters are today hailing the opportunity to pay more for their mobile bills when using them abroad, after years of meddling eurocrats needlessly securing them cheaper mobile rates throughout the EU.

As 02 and EE announced increased roaming charges in Europe, something prevented by EU legislation, proud Brexiters have hailed it as yet another Brexit dividend.

Brexit voter Derek Williams told us, “We knew what we voted for, and when they said roaming charges wouldn’t go up, we knew they were lying, so actually it’s only loser Remainers who are crying about this. I knew it was coming and I’m delighted with it.

“If I wanted some loathsome EU bastard making things more accessible and more affordable for me, I’d have voted for Remain like a big idiot, wouldn’t I?

“Who cares if my phone bill will be more expensive for two weeks out of every year, because I can get Tim Tams now. No, I’ve no idea what they’re actually like, but I could find out if I wanted, that’s the point!

“As a proud Brexiter I believe in the free markets, and if the free markets mean I have to pay more for the things I was getting much cheaper when we were in the EU, then so be it.

“Yes, I suspect that ‘paying more for things’ was on the other bus.”

Meanwhile, the government has announced that it will publish a full list of the benefits of Brexit on the back of a new commemorative stamp, just as soon as the government can think of something to put on the bottom half.

Peregrina · 24/06/2021 20:05

it's a bit too like the reality Hannibal.

But hey, blue passports and free of the ECJ - what matter if we cut off our noses to spite our faces?

prettybird · 24/06/2021 20:15

I posted this on FB 5 years ago today. Nowt much has changed Sad - except that I think that we are now ready for a new Indyref within the next couple of years. Smile

What's on my mind?

The sadness that a Right Wing coup has been enacted on the backs of a (conned) Left Wing protest vote.

Pride that Scotland was not conned.

Anger that the young will have to pay for the selfishness and short sightedness of the old.

Fear of a de-stabilised Europe, a rise of extremism and a risk to the peace not just of Europe but of the world.

A sense of "I told you so" to those who voted No in the Indyref because they believed in Europe.

Annoyance that the Remain campaign didn't challenge the immigration arguments when they were conflated with the Refugee crisis.

Annoyance that they didn't challenge the lies about the lack of democracy.

Annoyance that it wasn't explained to the electorate what a tiny proportion of overall government spending the EU "takes".

Annoyance that the journalists and Main Stream Media didn't do their jobs so that this was exposed, so it was left to the keyboard warriors on Social Media to do this - meaning a reduced reach, especially to the old.

Anger that the poor will pay for this while the rich will profit.

Fear that the EU protections (of the environment, of workers' rights, of consumers' rights, of public safety) will be diluted or removed.

Irritation that some people didn't read beyond the (misleading or downright lying) headlines and check out the facts and figures that were being quoted.

All of this tempered ever so slightly by a glimmer of hope that this might leave to Scottish Independence - but I don't think as a nation we're ready yet for yet another referendum too soon, much as I'd like one.

But here's hoping.
HarrietPierce · 24/06/2021 20:51

Nothing has done more than to promote the idea of Scottish independence than this toxic Westminster Government.

HarrietPierce · 24/06/2021 20:52

I'm with you prettybird as a half Scot through my Dad !

www.theguardian.com/global/2021/jun/24/rupert-murdoch-seeks-to-remove-editorial-independence-rules-at-the-times

Any bets on how long it'll take Oliver Dowden to say 'yep, no problem Rup'?

He of this increasing authoritarian government that feels perfectly entitled to dictate to museums who receive govt funds about having to keep controversial statues they wished to remove.

Seems our elected representatives have forgotten that it's our money, not theirs and that we pay their salary.

FrankieStein402 · 24/06/2021 22:18

Asked what success would look like in 10 years’ time, Frost said it was a world in which “we’ve settled into a more normal relationship with the EU … one where we have gone our own way in a number of areas and succeeded …

"Normal relationship" - like what we had?"
" number of areas.. " - not even most areas/many areas

Yes, it's still those bitter Brussels politicians who are just being mean and unreasonable. That's the entire problem rather than a sovereign UK trying to break an international treaty.

Is this being disingenuous or British/Eton/Oxford exceptionalism or just dim? Bit of all three?

Meanwhile, Matt Hancock has been allegedly caught playing doctors and nurses and is back on the naughty step.

You wouldn't know from the BBCs front page ..

5 years ago in a fit of anger and sadness I put a tenner on iceland and won a ton of money...

Peregrina · 25/06/2021 08:26

It would be interesting to see people's predictions for five years hence. For myself, I can't see the Scottish Independence issue going away, but I wouldn't like to put a timescale on it happening.

QueenOfThorns · 25/06/2021 08:27

You wouldn't know from the BBCs front page ..

Not only this, but they have omitted the Sun (which broke the story) from the round up of today’s front pages… Angry

Pretend it isn’t happening and it’ll all go away?

Peregrina · 25/06/2021 08:29

BTW - where has the information about Matt Hancock playing around come from?

It never ceases to amaze me that men who to my eyes don't look the slightest bit attractive and don't seem especially nice people can attract women. I suppose though this could be the 'What attracted you to the millionaire' effect.

DGRossetti · 25/06/2021 08:44

Having run out of podcasts I risked local BBC radio this morning.

Not a word about Hancock (is this a Mandela moment ?).

Lots on the Balearics being put on the green list. Which was soured by the following exchange ...

Bamboo bar owner - so we've had a skeleton staff these past few months, but hopefully we can take on some more for the surge.

Daz Hale (over chirpily) - so some job opportunities for the Brits then ?

BBO (deeply unimpressed) "er, no mate. Brexit".

at which point the piece tanked in tone.
