Because there doesn't seem to be a new thread yet. I'm no RTB or any of you other experts, but these threads need to keep going.

Give me a couple weeks and I'll be able to post cat placemarks!

Yellowspanner, you have chosen to infer something that I never said. It is generally accepted that immigration was one factor in the Leave vote.

Michael McCormack(acting Australian PM) -" The big winners, in the UK-Australian trade deal, are Australian producers, Australian farmers, indeed Australia full stop... I'm not worried about the Welsh, Scottish & NI beef producers... I want what's best for Australian producers."

Peregrina · 16/06/2021 19:15

So we sacrifice some sovereignty to Australia, because all trade deals do to some extent. Wouldn't it be good if we had a PM who wanted to support British Industry - by which I include fishing and farming?

HannibalHayeski · 16/06/2021 20:04

OK, I'll take the Spanner off my list of Brexshitters who have finally shown themselves up to be xenophobic.

It think that he/she/it is literally the only one who hasn't yet though...

TheElementsSong · 16/06/2021 20:22

Point of order!!!

No, dinosaurs are not dead - they are very much alive and we call them birds.

Crocodiles are not dinosaurs, nor are plesiosaurs and other marine reptiles.

OK, back to 🐿

HannibalHayeski · 16/06/2021 20:24

I take it squirrels aren't dinosaurs.

Well, maybe in the Brexshit sense...

HannibalHayeski · 16/06/2021 20:30

David Henig on twitter says it better than I could;

The attitude of the diehard Brexiteer to new trade deals is that they must be good because they aren't with the EU, and that trumps democracy or protecting livelihoods. And anyone who says otherwise is a traitorous remain type. There is a word for that political system.

HannibalHayeski · 16/06/2021 20:55

No racism at the Home Office. No. None at all. No...

FrankieStein402 · 16/06/2021 21:22

It’s already been flagged up that the Australian trade deal will make it easier for UK citizens to work there.

I spent around a year working in Sydney about 8 years ago, didn't notice any issues then, certainly didnt get the classic US border bods line of 'could your work be done by an American?'

Not sure about their much vaunted points system though - about a decade ago my brother was looking to emigrate with his family, he had skills that scored well, but had two 'disabled' kids (registered blind) which apparently blew his chances.

The time I spent there also made it clear that misogyny and white privilege was very much a thing - it may have changed, if not many brexiteers would feel very much at home.

HannibalHayeski · 16/06/2021 21:30

And, obviously, going to work or study in Australia is going to be easily as cheap as popping over to France, and not only for the rich, no...

DrBlackbird · 17/06/2021 08:29

Cummings telling us that Johnson intended to quit two years after the next election in order to “make money” and move on from politics

Quelle surprise

DrBlackbird · 17/06/2021 08:33

Catching up on Chris Grey...

There’s no point in finessing a basic fact: Brexiters have consistently lied about Northern Ireland (and much else besides) and the consequences are now coming back to haunt them, and all of us. They lied about what Brexit meant for Northern Ireland, and they lied about what they agreed for Northern Ireland. Johnson is the most obvious culprit, but it goes much wider than him: they almost all lied or at least misled.

He should stop being so opaque and just tell us what he thinks...

Jason118 · 17/06/2021 08:36

It was always obvious on NI - to my simple mind it's impossible to both have a border and not have a border at the same time. It really is that simple.

HarrietPierce · 17/06/2021 09:43

We can't get enough fruit and veg pickers from the UK but:
.There's a shortage of 26,000 farm workers in Australia

..The UK-Aus trade deal includes a visa for UK citizens to work on Aus farms

The UK can't get UK citizens to work on UK farms as our crops rot in fields, and Johnson has signed an agreement for UK to work on Aus farms

pollyannaperspective · 17/06/2021 09:48

Put your faith in the Home Office? Why would you when they keep rising to the challenge of most incompetent department? It may be an error, it may be the hostile environment. It is definitely appalling, shameful and does not bode well for those who cannot call on the UK media for assistance, having tried the HO 'contact us' options multiple times.

prettybird · 17/06/2021 10:00

What annoyed me about that article quite apart from it being yet another example of HO incompetence was that the Home Office spokesman said, "A replacement passport will be issued as soon as possible." Hmm

....and NOT "A replacement passport is being issued as I speak" Confused

....because, after all it was the HO error, so up to them to remedy it Angry

There may have been a certain amount of irony in my thread title. It was inspired by a poster on this thread who appears to have limitless faith in the Home Office as a beacon of competence and good practice.

I share your view pointythings. Whilst a series of examples of HO poor, incompetent or even deliberately racist treatment of our fellow human beings may not cause a shift in the thinking of some, it is worth the effort to catalogue the department's actions - both as historical record and on the off chance that critical thinking skills might develop.

Now now, I'm sure this is all fiiiiiiiiine and True BeLeavers will be delighted to confirm their ongoing enthusiastic support for these occurrences.

While the rest of us traitors can ponder thoughts like: "If the HO can fuck things up so badly for famous, well-connected, articulate people like this, how many other ordinary citizens are being utterly screwed over in the background?"

HarrietPierce · 17/06/2021 11:43

Seems like Sheku has got his passport now but similar thing happend to Ch 4 newsreader :

Krishnan Guru-Murthy
@krishgm
Replying to
@ShekuKM
"Glad this is sorted! You’re not alone. Once, some years ago, I applied for an additional passport and they ordered me to surrender all my documents or face arrest!"

pointythings · 17/06/2021 11:51

The point is that this sort of thing shouldn't happen at all. It's an action with such serious implications that it should automatically trigger major checking mechanisms including communication with the person whose passport is being withdrawn.

Jesse Norman suggesting "totally hopeless" does not reflect pfeffel's considered view of Hancock - just "hopeless" then

  • or given the way the ministers spray 'incredible' and 'world beating' perhaps "incredibly world beating hopeless"

I wonder whether little mistakes of this type happen to people with white skin and British-sounding names? Hmm

I have made similar observations and been accused of racism. It's hard not to think otherwise though.
