AuldAlliance
Hence my exasperation at the feeling that communicating with you resembles banging one's head against a brick wall. Which I expressed in non-hysterical terms.

Head. Brick wall. Bang. Bang. Bang.

Seems quite OTT to me. Grin

I suggested that the proposal to introduce voter ID will most likely deprive some voters of their rights, as the UK has no free form of photo ID.

You posted;
Making voter ID mandatory without making it possible to obtain any form of free ID...Especially in a country where a passport costs £75-85, and a driving test alone (theory & practical) is £85.
The current gvmt has proposed that photo ID should be mandatory when voting, despite the fact that all forms of photo ID are subject to a high fee.

All forms of photo ID are not subject to a high fee.

You finally engaged, by stating that denying the right to peaceful protest doesn't trouble you because you don't like Extinction Rebellion causing obstructions and megaphone guy was "annoying".

You are putting words in my mouth. I gave two examples of where the new bill might be useful:

"preventing Extinction Rebellion causing complete havoc in London" - which most ordinary Londoners would agree with, I'm certain. And 'the shouty guy' - who interrupted every BBC news broadcast outside parliament for months on end.

I also posted; "Let's wait and see" - I don't know if it will trouble me or not yet.

Going to be great fun when they start checking the paperwork for Brits holidaying in France this summer. Much confusion and disbelief in immigrant FB groups - UK citizens may not need a visa but you may be asked for your hotel booking and if you have enough funds to support yourself. And if you're coming to stay with friends? You'll need to apply a month in advance and pay 30 euro so their local mayor can supply you with the correct paperwork. Those queues are going to be very long....somehow I doubt every holidaymaker is going to arrive with the correct paperwork.

If they were trying to break the rules, why write a letter announcing she was coming to work for them for her to present at the airport?

From here?

Au pair arrangements...
they’ve got a signed letter of invitation from the host family that includes details of their stay, for example accommodation, living conditions, approximate working hours, free time, pocket money.

And this?
Giuseppe had sent his cousin Marta a letter signed by him to enter the UK as an au pair, welcoming her for some time in his family. Due to COVID and the suspension of tourism and leisure travel, non-residents could enter the UK only for work purposes in recent months.

Thanks for looking up an old post of mine Clavinova I am flattered. I won't return the compliment as I always avoid your cut and paste effluvia.

You called me deeply unpleasant and lacking any logic two weeks ago - and likened me to old man Steptoe. How could I forget you? Grin

What are you attempting to say Clav it’s not clear.

Why not try to articulate your point rather than just pasting?

Feb 2021
Landmark EU Settlement Scheme reaches five million applications.

A further £4.5 million of funding has been announced today for the network of 72 organisations across the UK who support the vulnerable and hard to reach in applying to the scheme. This is on top of the £17 million already provided.

Roughly £62k per org ...... that's going to go a long way........

Clavinova · 17/05/2021 14:30

If they provided a letter of invitation as per the government guidelines - why didn't they spot this?

Hiring an au pair
You can hire an au pair if they:

are from the UK or Ireland.
are from an EU country and have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or are eligible to apply under the EU Settlement Scheme.
have a Youth Mobility Scheme visa.
If none of these apply, you need to check the au pair’s visa conditions for their right to work before hiring them.

They've had over 5 million applications already (some might be duplicates pre-settled and settled) - how many more are they expecting? What happened to the 3 million?

I remember when they tried this in 2018. Our school sent a covering letter making it clear we were allowed to refuse.

@Clav

Presumably because they’ve had au pairs before or been advised that was required, and hadn’t appreciated the impact of Brexit rule changes. Just as many, many people have been caught out by unfamiliar customs requirements.

Given you can’t even read your own links one would have thought you could understand not reading the government website.

If they had intentionally been trying to break the rules then they would have tried to pass her off as a visitor.

Writing a letter to say she’s coming to work but not securing a work visa doesn’t make any sense as a scam.

I can't understand why there are so many different versions of their story - perplexing;

“We tried to inquire through our local MP whether she could come as an au pair which should have classed as skilled work and they told us it should be fine."

“It wasn’t."

If they had intentionally been trying to break the rules then they would have tried to pass her off as a visitor.

They thought they would be breaking the rules if she came as a visitor;

Due to COVID and the suspension of tourism and leisure travel, non-residents could enter the UK only for work purposes in recent months.

“My main worry was Covid, not Brexit, but unfortunately as it turned out, Covid wasn’t a problem, but Brexit regulations are.”

Writing a letter to say she’s coming to work but not securing a work visa doesn’t make any sense as a scam

Digging a hole for themselves rather than a scam.

I'm not sure she is eligible for a visa in any case;

What a complete fuck up Brexit is.

TatianaBis · 17/05/2021 16:14

Yes it’s really surprising there are different versions of a story in the media. Hmm

They’re either intentionally breaking the rules - ie scam, or not.

Which is it?

Yeah, he’ll be looking a long time.

Unless he settles for someone who gives him a list of things that aren’t true.
