Council in heart of Brexitland wants others to share the pain share the benefits

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-57369175

Child migrants arriving at Dover may be turned away by Kent County Council (KCC) within days as its services are overwhelmed, the authority has said.

KCC has taken its first steps in legal action against Home Secretary Priti Patel and wants her to make other councils take "their fair share".

...

I still think Frankie Boyle was spot on in his comment about PP on his NWO last series. Won't repeat it here, as I don't want another grilling by the Conservative and Unionist Party of Great Britain. I've only got use to sitting down again.

Peregrina · 06/06/2021 19:07

To be fair DGR I think Kent CC do have a point. We know that Brexiters absolutely adore child migrants so they should be welcoming them with open arms in other counties.

Its just another failure of Brexit, we have lost the provisions of the Dublin Convention & the ability to negotiate with our nearest neighbours, the relationship appears to be very sour atm.

Not only is this situation awful for the migrants, its also terrible for Kent's own social provision.

In something that will come as a total surprise to all, our treatment of EU people coming over here is likely to have repercussions...

mathanxiety · 07/06/2021 02:53

"The decision was sent to the European Court of Justice (CJEU) for clarification after being first heard at an employment tribunal in Watford, and is thought to be one of the last major decisions by the EU in relation to UK employment law before changes brought about by Brexit take hold..."

Do you think it's a good thing or a bad thing that Brexit could conceivably result in British employment law taking a different turn, to the detriment of the fight for equal pay and other matters relating to employment, @Clavinova?

mathanxiety · 07/06/2021 03:11

Am I the only poster here wondering why the heck anyone has to go to a specialty shop ('Taste of Britain') if they want British foods in Sweden?

Both were up to very recently members of the EU.

Meanwhile, I have in my fridge a half bottle of Italian mineral water and a few pounds of Irish cheese and butter, plus two boxes of an Irish brand of tea. I bought all these items in a local supermarket and a Walmart.

mathanxiety · 07/06/2021 03:34

However, it’s the local natives who are among the shop’s most enthusiastic customers. Swedes are extremely well-traveled, and even if they haven’t been to London recently, they consume a lot of UK-produced movies and television programming (subtitled, not dubbed!) where many of the shop’s most popular offerings appear almost as characters. (Curly Wurly anyone

The products would surely sell themselves on Swedish supermarket shelves.

Clearly someone has missed a trick.

Meanwhile, a reminder of a Special Relationship:

While many American grocery stores and gift shops were mentioned by our readers, one Stockholm favourite topped the list. The American Food and Gift Shop According to Charles has the largest selection of American food and memorabilia in the capital, ranging from Game of Thrones-inspired Oreos to every Pop Tart you could imagine. During the holidays, the store brings out different themed items for events like Thanksgiving, St. Patrick's Day, and 4th of July.

Brexit is not about individuals. It's about what is best for the whole of the UK now and in the future. It's not about what is best for some British citizens who live in the EU. It's about a way forward for the UK without the restraints or bureaucracy of the EU.

Is it just me or does anyone else hear an echo of 'jam tomorrow' when they read this?

mathanxiety · 07/06/2021 04:19

A points based immigration system will advantage the UK because we will bring talent from all over the world rather than freedom of movement for Europeans.

You are basing your comment on an assumption that there is no such thing as the internet, that people all over the world don't read English, and don't do a lot of research into their opportunities and the stability offered by various potential destinations.

HarrietPierce · 07/06/2021 07:39

"Brexit is not about individuals. It's about what is best for the whole of the UK now and in the future. It's not about what is best for some British citizens who live in the EU. It's about a way forward for the UK without the restraints or bureaucracy of the EU."

Well thanks to Brexit, bureaucracy appears to have increased tenfold. Just look at the problems Daniel lambert is having and he had done everything to prepare for it.
"Best for the whole of the UK" - Brexit is a deliberate act of self harm.

Jason118 · 07/06/2021 07:51

I think it's pretty obvious now that Brexit is detrimental to the UK, even @Clavinova and @yellowspanner aren't able to articulate any tangible upsides. It's a madness in the form of collective hysteria combined with sunk cost belief fallacy and cognitive dissonance. It's all so costly and pointless.

You can get a handful of British products in our local supermarket and I'd guess more are available in city supermarkets. But not a lot. Locally to me they have digestives, shortbread, carr's water biscuits and vimto. That's it. In the next nearest town (45 minutes away) we found Heinz tomato soup and stilton.
Peregrina · 07/06/2021 08:14

FatCat - at one time I would have said that there was a good marketing opportunity being missed there. Now the answer is going to be 'Forget it'.

Thats quite incredible HannibalHayeski :(

I see the Solicitor General Lucy Frazer is now saying the UK/EU trade deal implementation in NI is proving more complex than anticipated.... no shit sherlock... should have read the Westminster threads.

Clavinova · 07/06/2021 10:32

Apparently someone at the Home Office hasn't got the memo...

A bit disconcerting that the applicant has access to their mobile phone during the test and there is a "cheat sheet" option in the header. Grin

(Must be an out-of-date practice test from a private company)

Their current, practice, test asks "Who is Queen Elizabeth married too?

Is that proof that private companies aren't best suited to deliver public contracts ?

Or something else,. Clav ?

yellowspanner · 07/06/2021 14:10

Jason118, I disagree. Brexit has already benefitted the UK in my opinion. We are no longer tied to the ECJ, which despite what is usually written here, does not only deal with trade. That is a big benefit for me.
We can have a points based immigration system so that opportunities are available equally to people from many countries not just those within the EU. Again major benefit.

pollyannaperspective · 07/06/2021 14:26

Yellowspanner, until matters judicially decided by the ECJ while the UK was an EU member are brought before the UK courts - and overturned, I think you will find that ECJ decisions will continue to be applied in the UK. What's more, the adjudicating committees under the TCA and NI Protocol will be staffed by individuals, on the EU side at least, that will reflect on ECJ judgements when discussing solutions to intractable issues that were and continue to be identified by many, including on these threads, but seem not to have troubled those responsible for negotiating said TCA and Protocol or, indeed, those who passed both in to UK law.
TLDR: the ECJ judgements continue to have effect in UK legal jurisdictions. So tied we remain.

As for the points based immigration system - you may hope it is better, but, if past performance is anything to go by, possibly not in the hands of the Home Office - Windrush Scandal, current issues with points based immigrants not being able to get ILR (see Lewis Goodall's Newsnight piece last week and other articles over the last 5 years), difficulties for UK resident EU nationals to secure UK residency post Brexit (and pre to be accurate) and ongoing uncertainty for EU visitors to the UK being challenged at the border and some sent to detention centres for deportation. Your son will be rubbing his hands as an immigration lawyer - business looks brisk.

pointythings · 07/06/2021 14:27

Which is currently not working out brilliantly in hospitality, is it? It also perpetuates the system whereby people who come to work here are effectively penalised by having to pay UK taxes and having to pay the NHS surcharge as well as recurring immigration charges costing £££. I suppose you could see this as a nice little earner for the Treasury, therefore a benefit, but it's immoral.

borntobequiet · 07/06/2021 14:28

That is a big benefit for me

How?

We can have a points based immigration system so that opportunities are available equally to people from many countries not just those within the EU. Again major benefit.

Why?
