I am also surprised that people haven't clocked that all the aspects of the pandemic which require strategic thinking and planning (ie pandemic preparedness, policy decisions about how to educate our children, in other words what a government is for) have been a shambles, but the operational issues (ie vaccine rollout, NHS intensive care) have been a success. Actually I suppose I am saddened but not surprised.

wewereliars · 05/06/2021 09:35

Taking credit for what works, scapegoating for what doesn't.

Now that IS something this governement is world beating at.

mrslaughan · 05/06/2021 10:09

@yellowspanner

Some posters on here are repeatedly nasty about other posters.and there is no need for it. Where is the harm in saying what you want to say in a polite and civilised way. Clavinova only mentioned her law degree because the other poster mentioned it.

Brexit is not about individuals. It's about what is best for the whole of the UK now and in the future. It's not about what is best for some British citizens who live in the EU. It's about a way forward for the UK without the restraints or bureaucracy of the EU.
Fatcat, l'm truely sorry if you are inconvenienced.

But yet you have failed in all your posts to point to why it is better - except for some mythical concept which you appear unable to explain at every turn. And don't bother trying now - I used to read your posts - but now I just scroll......... I am not interested in just empty rhetoric
HarrietPierce · 05/06/2021 10:13

"But yet you have failed in all your posts to point to why it is better "

yellowspanner seems obsessed with the deportation of any poor soul perceived as illegal. She sees that as" better".

Yes - but in many posts we have demonstrated amply that we were already doing that..... and brexit has made it harder to get "rid" if those she truly despises - asylum seekers and refugees ......so 🤷‍♀️
Peregrina · 05/06/2021 10:37

But what exactly is a country if it's not made up of the individual residents/citizens? I agree that each person's whims cannot be wholly accommodated and a balance has to be struck between what is believed to be best for the country. But so far the Brexiters have been unable to give a really tangible benefit.

We have sovereignty for example, as evidenced by our immigration policies - this has now been decreed by yellowspanner not to be a question of sovereignty. As yet the answer as to why the immigration policy as far as the rest of the world was concerned was part of the remit of the EU, or if not, where did it originate, has gone unanswered.

Tim Martin's labour troubles might in the fullness of time lead to British employers (especially in the retail and hospitality industry) bucking up their ideas about how they treat their staff. If so, that will be a welcome Brexit bonus, but it hasn't happened yet.

Exactly!

But there now is this deal with Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.....

mrslaughan · 05/06/2021 10:51

@DuncinToffee

But there now is this deal with Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.....
Apparently in much worse terms than we had as members of the EU....

So I guess if the aim was to make us poorer......

Maybe that is it - it's to punish the poor? A continuation of austerity....?

DuncinToffee · 05/06/2021 11:00

Well yes
Lewis Goodall on twitter

This is how Oslo reacted- Norwegian PM Erna Solberg: “The FTA is not as good as the EEA agreement. An FTA means more bureaucracy and higher costs both for businesses and citizens...”
“...and is less dynamic, compared to what we had [with the UK] through the EEA agreement. The deal does not solve all trade barriers. Some remain unsolved. We must therefore not forget that this is a result of the UK choosing to leave the internal market and the common rules.”

Her words are partly about Solberg wanting to protect Norway’s position in the EEA, something to which her party is committed and for which there are critics in Norwegian politics. But it’s a starkly different tone from that struck by British ministers.

DuncinToffee · 05/06/2021 11:02

I also enjoyed reading the replies to Oliver Dowden's tweet about how this deal is good for touring artists.

yellowspanner · 05/06/2021 11:09

Harriet, your post is nasty and offensive. I have never said I want to get rid of asylum seekers or refugees.
I want to get economic migrants and failed asylum seekers deported.
We should always welcome refugees.

Peregrina · 05/06/2021 11:10

But this hasn't stopped the Brexiters crowing about how they have secured a tariff free deal. I.e. they have managed to partly put the clock back to how it was up to December last year.

HarrietPierce · 05/06/2021 11:11

Daniel Lambert Wines

Have to work today delivering the Prosecco and Pinot Grigio that has finally arrived in Wales this morning. 5 weeks in transportation due to paperwork which had to be redone 11 times until customs were happy. Normally takes 5 days. #BrexitReality

Peregrina · 05/06/2021 11:22

yellowspanner - you have repeatedly said that you are happy with Johnson's Government of which Priti Patel is a key member. I don't recall you hedging it about with caveats. When pressed you do manage to mention some - we managed to get an admission that you thought the Windrush deportations wrong. You now appear to be telling us that you don't find all of Priti Patel's ideas acceptable. Well, it's a start.

pointythings · 05/06/2021 11:38

yellowspanner, HarrietPierce was pointing out (rightly IMO) that your main focus in terms of Brexit benefits is around deportations. No care for people losing their businesses and their jobs, no care for young people having reduced opportunities in the parts of the world geographically nearest to them, no consideration for the poorest in the UK who are suffering already. No, it's all about kicking people out.

A lot of 'failed' asylum seekers only 'fail' because the Home Office applies its criteria without much regard for law or justice. The fact that you support this tells the rest of us here a great deal about the kind of person you are.

Oh don't be ridiculous! that post was in no way nasty.

It was pointing out that many of your posts focus on asylum seekers and deportations, which they are. You see being able deport people as a big benefit of brexit.

You ve also failed to say how you feel about no longer being able to deport migrants to the first EU country they arrived at but as you don't see brexit as being about the individual, maybe you don't care?

jasjas1973 · 05/06/2021 12:48

@pointythings

You put it a lot better than me!

jasjas1973 · 05/06/2021 13:00

Under freedom of movement EU citizens could come and live and work in the UK on the same basis as UK citizens as I'm sure you know. Citizens from other parts of the world could not. Now all will be treated equally because the same rules will apply to all

Yes all those nurses, fruit pickers and bar staff who wont come here now as its as hard (even harder) to come here as say Canada or Australia (post covid)
Meanwhile our young people will find working in Europe just as hard too..... what a win!

HarrietPierce · 05/06/2021 13:01

It's far more nasty and offensive to relish in the deportation of people, who through no fault of their own, may have failed to jump through the hoops required to stay on Brexit island.

HarrietPierce · 05/06/2021 13:23

You alright with this kind of thing Yellowspanner :

My friend’s Spanish mother also been told she has 2 weeks to sort her papers out or she has to leave..she’s 76 & been in UK for 56 years! Paid her taxes etc…disgusting #BrexitDisaster

mrslaughan · 05/06/2021 13:58

Well the UK gov completely Fucking up their management of the Covid pandemic certianly won't encourage NZ and Australians to come here anytime soon. The why the UK Gov has hung its citizens out to dry is looked on with aghast.

DuncinToffee · 05/06/2021 14:31

Not sure if migrants will be in a hurry to come here

twitter.com/lewis_goodall/status/1399843724507729925?s=19
Several years ago the govt opened a scheme for highly skilled migrants to settle in the UK. Today, many we’ve spoken to tell us they wish they’d never made the trip having been subject to what they say is unfair treatment by the Home Office which has left them on the edge.
