SLOW CLAP FOR BREXITEERS (again).

I posted a while back about a ridiculous customs charge I had to pay due to the wonder that is Brexit.

So now, it’s a special birthday of a relative who has had a hard time recently. I ordered her a certain type of Murano glass vase (she collects these) and, hardly surprisingly, it comes from Italy where it is made. No problem as it’s free and fast delivery with this company.

Anyway, the vase didn’t arrive. Checked on UPS and hey presto - a customs charge of £170 for a vase that cost £450. This is “due to the inconvenience that is Brexit” that’s how it translates on the Italian tracking page).

So, it seems we can no longer order anything from Europe for to the genius of those who voted Brexit! Has anything more idiotic ever taken place in British history? Maybe reality will finally hit them at the same time as the customs charges hit?

To those that never really looked beyond their own backyard, probably not a big deal

FourTeaFallOut · 29/03/2021 19:27

How much to get my diamond shoes through customs?

MiaMc · 29/03/2021 19:27

Bloody hell, did mumsnet turn pro-Brexit overnight?

fretnot · 29/03/2021 19:28

PPs saying “why didn’t you check the amount” - this is actually pretty difficult to do!

I bought some shelves from what I thought was a UK company but turns out they ship directly from the factory in Italy. Like with the OP’s order they explicitly stated that all taxes were paid, and shipping was free(!) but they did warn that some import duty may be liable owing to Brexit. I tried to find out how much but... so many different subcategories of goods meant more time than I’d be prepared to spend, even after finding the right “gov” website to delve into.

Turns out that DHL also take a little commission on the import charges! (The total additional was a £66 bill on top of a purchase of £230). Yay Brexit!

@B33Fr33

Oh my god how funny! There are actual real people who think the vaccine negotiation would have been different inside the EU for the UK. I really thought it was just cartoonists taking artistic licence. Thanks. I'll be laughing all week that the propoganda machine is still spoon feeding successfully.
Would you really want someone like Ursula von de Leyen, involved in decision making for the UK? Now that's funny, if you do.
alaia3 · 29/03/2021 19:29

Even when you phone U.K. customs it’s actually embarrassing as they don’t know what’s going on. This is what the dopey bloke said, “Hold in, can I check with the manager ..,Hello, well we don’t really know, but something like one in three packages will be charged now and I don’t know why and I haven’t got a list or anything, but all you can do is pay it and then fill out a form to find out if you’ve been overcharged or something like that because it’s government, not me and there’s piles of stuff at customs and we just leave it there for 21 days and then send it back.”

you keep saying its untrue people dont buy from overseas with import tax

well they dont do they because you know tax weve all survived having not ordering high end items from overseas

if you dont like it you can go t another country

PinkiOcelot · 29/03/2021 19:31

🙄🙄🙄
How long are people going to be bleating on about this?
If you can afford to pay £450 for a vase you can afford the delivery.

Kimye4eva · 29/03/2021 19:31

@alaia3

Why the bloody hell would I only order from Britain. What utter nonsense is that? Who does that? It’s not even possible.

I’d this is the mentality of people it’s no wonder we are where we are.

Are you being serious? Plenty of people buy British where they possibly can. It’s much better for our carbon footprint and it helps to support local businesses and jobs.

😂 Ah OP you are good fun.

It’s also annoying trying to buy things from the U.K. and have them shipped to EU. I stopped trying on about 3rd January.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 29/03/2021 19:32

This country has had it as far as I’m concerned

Off you pop then.

DoubleTweenQueen · 29/03/2021 19:32

I'll be off to France soon. Can't wait.

Ednafrommooneyponds · 29/03/2021 19:32

@mygenericusername

"Tell us what the item is then. I can guarantee I will find it for sale from a U.K. stockist"

I'm sure you could but I'd bet my pension it won't be British made.

LemonRoses · 29/03/2021 19:32

Yes Brexit is rubbish. The impact is huge but being manipulated under the cover of Covid.

HandyHarry · 29/03/2021 19:32

@alaia3 the dopey bloke is not as dopey as you! You've been caught again! So dopey! GrinGrinGrin

alaia3 · 29/03/2021 19:33

“if you dont like it you can go t another country”

Here we have it ^ Say no more.,,

OP posts:
fretnot · 29/03/2021 19:33

To think this is only going to affect high end items is pretty blinkered

PawPawNoodle · 29/03/2021 19:34

@alaia3

“In my life I have only ordered one thing from abroad and that was from the US”

Yes because that’s totally normal, isn’t it.

Yes, it is totally normal to not make any more than a few orders from overseas in a lifetime. Most people don't have the privilege of being able to chuck money at importing Italian cutlery or whatever it is you're ordering, and those that do aren't so crass as to plaster it all over a parenting website where mothers frequently post about not knowing if they can make ends meet.
DoorhandlesUnited · 29/03/2021 19:36

Won't £90 of that be VAT?

Moondust001 · 29/03/2021 19:37

Oh ffs. I voted to remain. I passionately believe the decision to leave was a bad one. But can we all giving give it up now? It's excruciating the number of threads rehearsing why we shouldn't have left or crowing about the fact that we did. Get over it. Both sides. It's done. I have been managing orders from outside the UK for decades. Everyone knows that there are tariffs and/ or taxes. Pay them, don't order from abroad, or leave the country. But please can we stop arguing about history. There are far more important things to worry about than a decision that has been made, and isn't going to change any time soon.

arethereanyleftatall · 29/03/2021 19:37

Lol. You bellend. Again.

I guess the people who are alive because they've had their vaccine probably would take that over your moronic import complaints.

Yabu

Gemma2019 · 29/03/2021 19:37

I hear you OP - I had similar issues trying to order Easter eggs for the kids this year. Faberge London didn't stock the type I needed so I had to buy pre-enjoyed from an online boutique in Italy. Now I have to pay £4999 in customs fees thanks to bloody Brexiteers.

alaia3 · 29/03/2021 19:39

How many things in your house are “British” PotNoodle?

OP posts:
HamFisted · 29/03/2021 19:41

I don't think I've ever ordered anything that costs over £135 from abroad. And I don't think that's as unusual as you seem to think.

But that's irrelevant, really. Expect to pay the customs charge, then be pleasantly surprised if it turns out you don't have to, rather than expecting to get away with it and being irrationally irate when you don't.

TooOldandTired · 29/03/2021 19:41

@alaia3

This country has had it as far as I’m concerned. We’re going backwards to nowhere.
If it's so shit off you pop then.

You release 90%+ of people will never incur these charges and an even higher percentage wouldn't/couldn't spend £450 on a vase.
If you really think any who voted Brexit (or lots who didn't) care about you and your vase you are mistaken.
The rules changed, seeing as you are so much cleverer than all those stupid brexitiers maybe you could have check if charges apply.
