SLOW CLAP FOR BREXITEERS (again).

I posted a while back about a ridiculous customs charge I had to pay due to the wonder that is Brexit.

So now, it’s a special birthday of a relative who has had a hard time recently. I ordered her a certain type of Murano glass vase (she collects these) and, hardly surprisingly, it comes from Italy where it is made. No problem as it’s free and fast delivery with this company.

Anyway, the vase didn’t arrive. Checked on UPS and hey presto - a customs charge of £170 for a vase that cost £450. This is “due to the inconvenience that is Brexit” that’s how it translates on the Italian tracking page).

So, it seems we can no longer order anything from Europe for to the genius of those who voted Brexit! Has anything more idiotic ever taken place in British history? Maybe reality will finally hit them at the same time as the customs charges hit?

What’s next on your shopping list OP?

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 29/03/2021 19:00

Buy local is not a sensible piece of advice for someone buying for a relative who specifically collects Italian glass.

alaia3 · 29/03/2021 19:01

And yes... it’s all random (one in three packages they estimate, though they can’t be sure) - all for extra Brexit Britain fun!

I can honestly say that of all the things I hate about Brexit, paying duty on imported luxury items probably worries me the least.

canigooutyet · 29/03/2021 19:01

@bungaloid

I don't really get the new systems. I've had two separate things arrive from Germany, each valued at about £100, and neither has needed any additional fees paying. I was mentally ready for something, but they just turned up. Is it a statistical sample / luck thing, or is there a proper way to do it?
Because they are under £135

AlexaNeverListens · 29/03/2021 19:02

Is this a real post or do you just like telling us how much money you've spent on artwork and vases?

lioncitygirl · 29/03/2021 19:02

😂😂😂 why didn’t you learn from your previous mistake or check first?! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

“There are plenty of companies within the U.K. where you can buy such items. “

We, no there are not or I would have ordered it from this U.K. wouldn’t I? (obvs)

Newsflash - we do not produce everything in this country!

Nope. Show we the evidence please. What complete and utter nonsense.

Random you say?!? Grin

Jesus Christ. No wonder you have trouble understanding Ts and Cs.

rwalker · 29/03/2021 19:05

Forget artwork and vase order some glasses (from the uk ) then you can read up on all the info that CLEARLY states you would have to pay this .

Eleganz · 29/03/2021 19:06

@mygenericusername

There are plenty of companies within the U.K. where you can buy such items. Your footprint on getting one item imported is huge compared to a retailer importing a whole containers worth.

As a British company, our exports have been unaffected in terms of share of sales. We have had the minor inconvenience of the odd delay here and there but we got our act together, have all our products coded for export and got our licence in plenty of time.

On the other side, my parents in their 60s are vaccinated. For that, I’m very grateful to this government and the people you are sneering at.

Entire depends on the products being imported and exported as to whether retailers stock them in the UK and whether UK exporters have had troubles. It is very clear that certain export sectors have had huge problems with brexit that they have still not sorted out.

Vaccine nationalism is also a fucking horrible look by the way.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 29/03/2021 19:06

@alaia3

Why the bloody hell would I only order from Britain. What utter nonsense is that? Who does that? It’s not even possible.

I’d this is the mentality of people it’s no wonder we are where we are.

I've never ordered anything online that's needed to be shipped from overseas - too expensive.
mygenericusername · 29/03/2021 19:06

Newsflash - we do not produce everything in this country!

Tell us what the item is then. I can guarantee I will find it for sale from a U.K. stockist.

HOkieCOkie · 29/03/2021 19:07

Slow hand clap for the moron still crying over brexit.

Eleganz · 29/03/2021 19:09

@HOkieCOkie

Slow hand clap for the moron still crying over brexit.
It has literally been only a few months since the import and export measure came into force and they are still under active discussion and potential further changes. Have you been living under a rock or did you assume Boris "got brexit done" when he squeaked the treaty over the line before Christmas?
alaia3 · 29/03/2021 19:09

It’s not about the amount to all those scoffing. As I said, it was a special gift for someone who has been very ill for their milestone birthday.

Wait until it happens to you and then tell me Brexit was worth it. Anything over £135 apparently - take your lucky chances of being charged an extra £70 or whatever once it hits customs. Fantastic.

Er no, it was free delivery otherwise.

I look at this and wonder what’s so special about this 1,600 murano pair of vases

Bet you’ll be happy to get your vaccine before the majority of the EU though...

mygenericusername · 29/03/2021 19:13

Vaccine nationalism is also a fucking horrible look by the way.

It’s not vaccine nationalism. The EU are sitting on millions of doses that they can’t get their act together to distribute. My friends parents in Germany are having to complete form after form to get the jab. They are in their 70s for god sake. I think the priority is distribution rather than box ticking bureaucratic bullshit.

That's mad! Clearly for people who have run out of stuff spend their money on.
VictoriaLudorum · 29/03/2021 19:14

It works the other way as well, unfortunately.
Jigsaw has stopped shipping to Europe.
Trying to return things to the UK is a nightmare, too.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 29/03/2021 19:14

Slow clap for the idiots who don't factor in customs before they order, more like.

In my life I have only ordered one thing from abroad and that was from the US. So yes it is possible and quite easy as long as you have more sense than money.

ivfbeenbusy · 29/03/2021 19:14

Buy British

I'd rather have covid vaccines than a vase 🤷‍♀️
