Westministenders: Unilateral Ignoring of WHO rules

Where we are:

On 1st January the EU started to apply checks on all goods from the UK coming into the Union.

However the UK decided to take a slower route to this, and planned that on the 1st April the UK we would be carrying out Sanitary & Phytosanitary paperwork for animal and plant EU imports like meat and eggs.

Then on 1 July we'd implement a full customs check on all goods arriving into the UK from EU member states.

Obviously we've struggled with exports as we weren't ready for this and its fucked business. But ultimately the import side of things has yet to hit the shit fan still.

It sounds like there is likely to be issues with imports of food in particular, so there is talk of delaying our plan of checks until later in the day. There is concern that the reopening of pubs and restuarants which will up demands of imports occuring at the same time as checks are put in place is likely to be 'problematic'.

Remember we get 2/3 of fruit, veg and cheese from the EU. And half our wine. And to date these largely have only been affected by haulage issues NOT UK customs issues...

You might want to keep that in mind.

I notice the EU law about right to repair is being bought in. Presumably because if the UK wants to sell to the EU it needs to comply anyway, so no point in having 2 product streams. Particularly when it would be the work of a morning to set up a business in the EU exporting spares to he UK.

And unlike cars, you don't get left hand drive washing machines to artifically create a cartel.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56340077

Appliances such as fridges, washing machines and TVs should last longer and be cheaper to run under new rules.

Ministers have confirmed that from the summer consumers will have a right to repair on goods they buy.

They are keeping a promise to implement EU rules aimed at cutting energy and bills – and reducing the need for new materials.

(contd)

Strange isn't it, when we held all the cards?

Peregrina · 10/03/2021 10:51

The trouble is with things like fridges, dishwashers and washing machines, they have a nasty habit of breaking when they are 10 years and one month old.

borntobequiet · 10/03/2021 10:56

Anyone tried to buy a cheap home printer lately?

ListeningQuietly · 10/03/2021 11:07

DGR
That map makes me snigger because my German built car satnav does not recognise the Holyhead Dublin Ferry route so tried to tell me something similar Smile

BUT
Brexit dividends are just piling up

One nice thing about having used Amazon since the start is a lovely order history - with historic prices. Mind you, I've also kept every receipt from grocery shopping since 2017.

Two useful anti-gaslighting resources.

The equivalent to the one I bought in 2013 for £125 is now £160.

Yy previous machine had a five year warranty & conked out six weeks after it ended.
Bee0808 · 10/03/2021 11:41

Been slowly replacing stuff this year/end of last year.
2 new laptops, new printer, 2 new ipads, portable air con unit for the summer...
No idea what the prices/tariffs will be like post June 2021...
Also having some work done to the house...whilst the contractors can still get the parts/Plaster/tiles etc

Bee0808 · 10/03/2021 11:42

Yes...had a devil of a job getting a new dishwasher last summer!
All oos most places

borntobequiet · 10/03/2021 11:50

I understand that lockdown has made lots of people need to buy cheap printers. But Argos has had nothing like that in stock for weeks now. I think in normal (non-Brexit) times they'd be restocking constantly.

He'd get more if he'd been on Love Island Grin, they get a crazy amount. If you want a good laugh, take a look at the price/celebrity list.

prettybird · 10/03/2021 12:06

We're going to need to buy a new dishwasher as our current one has just gone phut Sad.

Not sure how old it is but not very old. The element has gone but Siemens have integrated it into the pump so the part alone is £85 and you practically have to take the whole machine apart to fit it Angry
I wish I’d realised that the element in my old Zanussi dishwasher was extremely easily replaced, when it stopped working - but I’d already got rid of it when I found that out.Sad

You're not filling me with confidence as to our ability to replace it quickly! Shock

Try ao.com

DGRossetti · 10/03/2021 12:10

Some chatter in DIY land that there doesn't seem to be any requirement to make parts available to the great unwashed, and that it won't address bundling.

So basically, whereas before, you could only get a £100 part to replace that £5 doohickey from an authorised dealer if the manufacturers kindness allowed it, it is now your right to be able to buy the £100 part to fix the £5 doohickey. Maybe even an inalienable right.

For some reason I am reminded of when the income tax rate fell, but the threshold did too.

NoCryingInEngineering · 10/03/2021 16:49

We bought a new printer recently to support home schooling.

It looks like the pricing models have shifted with changing from model specific ink cartridges to refillable ink bottles. The printer we bought was near enough like for like in terms of functions etc & was definitley more expensive than the old one but the bottle ink is massively cheaper. Like £10/6000 pages v £10/300 pages.

So you used to buy a cheap printer, but then have to spend 3 or 4 times the printer cost in ink cartridges over its life. Now you spend more on the printer but the overall cost is the same.

This came up on my news feed. A very sad read as it's spot on.

The nationalism — its ugliness, hate, racism, selfishness, greed, toxicity — that wrecked Britain is here to stay. Its people haven’t learned a thing.

I was due on a DEFRA webinar on Monday so we know what documents are required for importing from 1st April. It was postponed less than an hour before it was due to start. Basically because they weren't ready.

TheHateIsNotGood · 10/03/2021 20:48

As so many Container Ships have been held up in Ports worldwide, there's a shortage of Containers in the Chinese Ports - don't worry those cheaply-manufactured goods (eg: printers) have already been made and will be on their way to you soon.

Irrespective of any damage to human rights and the environment, your right to buy these products cheaply appears to be the priority and over rides any other concerns.

Peregrina · 10/03/2021 20:52

Has this been posted? Another Brexit bonus, with Japanese firms moving out.

Now if it was as wonderful as Johnson and chums say that it is, it would be the Netherlands and Germany who had seen a decline in the number of Japanese firms trading there, and the UK which would have seen the increases.

changi · 10/03/2021 20:57

Is it just me that is wondering what the World Health Organisation has to do with Brexit?
