Westministenders: Unilateral Ignoring of WHO rules

Where we are:

On 1st January the EU started to apply checks on all goods from the UK coming into the Union.

However the UK decided to take a slower route to this, and planned that on the 1st April the UK we would be carrying out Sanitary & Phytosanitary paperwork for animal and plant EU imports like meat and eggs.

Then on 1 July we'd implement a full customs check on all goods arriving into the UK from EU member states.

Obviously we've struggled with exports as we weren't ready for this and its fucked business. But ultimately the import side of things has yet to hit the shit fan still.

It sounds like there is likely to be issues with imports of food in particular, so there is talk of delaying our plan of checks until later in the day. There is concern that the reopening of pubs and restuarants which will up demands of imports occuring at the same time as checks are put in place is likely to be 'problematic'.

Remember we get 2/3 of fruit, veg and cheese from the EU. And half our wine. And to date these largely have only been affected by haulage issues NOT UK customs issues...

You might want to keep that in mind.

Chin up chucks - I'm sure your 'truth' will shine - meanwhile yo're all sounding like the last, lonely geezers after last orders have been called.

HannibalHayes · 07/04/2021 22:59

Ah, Hate. Why haven't you started a thread about the "troubles" in Northern Ireland at the moment, and how it is absolutely, definitely, completely nothing whatsoever to do with wonderful Brexshit?

HannibalHayes · 07/04/2021 23:02

Funny how when we abbreviate your name it seems to become so much more appropriate...

Peregrina · 08/04/2021 09:53

HateIs - your post is particularly crass
seeing that there is a danger of civil war breaking out in Northern Ireland.

However, this should cheer you up - another Brexit bonus

Now the DUP are trying to blame the outbreak of violence on a Sinn Fein funeral, but from what I have read, this was held last June or July, and it's only now, post the Transition period ending and the effects of Brexit being felt that the violence has broken out.

Oh but it's nothing to do with Brexit! I don't doubt that it's not as black and white as that, but Brexit hasn't helped the situation.

ListeningQuietly · 08/04/2021 10:00

Most interesting to me is that clearance agents are not taking on new clients.
That does not bode well for week after next.

The decision not to prosecute was only announced a week ago - I watched several BBC TV reports at the time. Just popping out so you will have to read the BBC links yourself:

BBC 30 March -
Bobby Storey funeral: NI politicians react to PPS decision.

BBC 30 March - Bobby Storey funeral: Arlene Foster calls on PSNI chief to resign.

17 December 2020 -
The police say an investigation into potential breaches of restrictions at the funeral of senior IRA figure Bobby Storey is now completed.

A file will be submitted to the Public Prosecution Service...

I think that’s been the case since the start of the year - customs agents being inundated with calls and turning people away?
wherearemychickens · 08/04/2021 10:39

What happens week after next?

ListeningQuietly · 08/04/2021 10:42

@wherearemychickens

What happens week after next?
Shops finish taking down their Christmas decorations and start shifting stock again. Hospitality venues start selling food in catering quantities again. At which stage the pressure on the logistics chain will start to show.

The lack of the Irish land bridge lorries on their inward leg will be an interesting factor.

Peregrina · 08/04/2021 10:46

Clavinova always pops out.

So the decision to not prosecute was only taken last week. But it doesn't alter the fact that the riots didn't break out last year.

We could also look to the behaviour of Westminster politicians - for them law breaking is something to be shrugged off with a 'So what?'

Peregrina · 08/04/2021 10:50

Not that Westminster politicians just shrugging their shoulders makes law breaking right but they would have more moral authority if they set an example.

HesterThrale · 08/04/2021 10:58

At an independent garden centre last week, prices seemed a little higher than before, with gaps in stock. Talking to the owner, I heard a couple of their EU suppliers have stopped exporting to the U.K. due to paperwork. But a larger supplier there has agreed to be an agent for other suppliers’ goods, doing the paperwork for them. And adding a fee for themselves for doing it. Therefore goods are more expensive and take longer to arrive.

The owner wasn’t so keen on Brexit now.

Maybe many EU goods will get pricier and there’ll slowly be less choice, but we won’t notice... like boiling frogs.

Peregrina · 08/04/2021 11:00

But it will be the EU's fault for not giving us a special deal. But wait, we had a special deal....

Peregrina · 08/04/2021 11:10

And of course, the rest of the world is going to come running in to trade with us to make up for the gaps. It doesn't seem to have happened yet though.

It's all so very depressing and predictable isn't it. Thanks everyone for keeping the threads going.
Missing seeing a few regulars on here. Hope everyone is Ok.
LQ have you heard from Big Choc recently ?

LeClerc Most days!
RedToothBrush I've emailed her to do a thread but if she doesn't, I have a title Wink

Peregrina · 08/04/2021 11:42

The thing is, we are in a sort of phoney war now, which is probably why it's a bit quiet.

And besides which, the various “calls to arm” on Twitter and Facebook actually references the sea border/NI protocol, and not the Bobby Storey funeral PPS outcome. So a valiant attempt by Arlene to deflect from the DUP mess-up, but the loyalists didn’t get the memo, it seems.
