Westministenders: Unilateral Ignoring of WHO rules

Where we are:

On 1st January the EU started to apply checks on all goods from the UK coming into the Union.

However the UK decided to take a slower route to this, and planned that on the 1st April the UK we would be carrying out Sanitary & Phytosanitary paperwork for animal and plant EU imports like meat and eggs.

Then on 1 July we'd implement a full customs check on all goods arriving into the UK from EU member states.

Obviously we've struggled with exports as we weren't ready for this and its fucked business. But ultimately the import side of things has yet to hit the shit fan still.

It sounds like there is likely to be issues with imports of food in particular, so there is talk of delaying our plan of checks until later in the day. There is concern that the reopening of pubs and restuarants which will up demands of imports occuring at the same time as checks are put in place is likely to be 'problematic'.

Remember we get 2/3 of fruit, veg and cheese from the EU. And half our wine. And to date these largely have only been affected by haulage issues NOT UK customs issues...

You might want to keep that in mind.

@Peregrina

Agree that Starmer has been a disappointment and not sure if all the effort to placate the ‘red wall’ is worth it.

I agree and he ought to be making a pitch for the moderate Tory voters who find Johnson and his right wing abhorrent. Make a pitch on healthcare, secure work and housing, and education and I am quite sure that the moderate Tories who are now politically homeless could lend their vote, even if just to get Johnson and cronies out.

Im sure the nonexistant 'moderate' Tories manages to dutifully put the cross in the box that fucked us all over because scary Corbyn would have turned the country into a lentil weaving venezuelan socialist utopia Hmm
ListeningQuietly · 21/03/2021 15:17

The red wall was lost a decade ago.
NOTHING will bring it back.

Labour should concentrate in the half of the electorate who can be persuaded that Brexit is a Tory plan to asset strip their communities.

Johnson is from the cohort that learns debating and rhetoric at school and uni.
He does not care what he says
so long as the person in front of him is nodding.

Peregrina · 21/03/2021 16:03

Labour should concentrate in the half of the electorate who can be persuaded that Brexit is a Tory plan to asset strip their communities.

How will that be brought about? Would it take a Scottish vote for Independence to make them change?

I despair. Enough of us don't like what we see - but don't really see anyone fully representing us.

ListeningQuietly · 21/03/2021 16:37

How will that be brought about?
Bravery.
The ability to see that trying to please everybody
pleases nobody.

Jeremy Corbyn's brother is leading Tories around London protesting lockdown.

time to ditch that whole legacy and say
Brexit will damage the lives of the people we care about

Yeah its a U turn. So what.
Labour stand for nothing at the moment.
Maybe they should stand up for the young and the interested and the travelled and females and the workers
and admit that Brexit is a shit show
and only by engaging positively with the EU
can the rights of workers
and the environment be preserved

Tories will not do it
Libdems are irrelevant
SNP and Plaid between them represent populations smaller than London.

Do you honestly think the state broadcaster, the redtops and the rest of the MSM are ever going to let that happen? Threaten the status quo and youll be labelled a terrorist sympathising commie in no time that is 'tRyInG tO bEtRaY eNgLaNd'

DGRossetti · 21/03/2021 16:58

I think we now need to forget about "Brexit". That ship sailed and ain't ever coming back.

The only way I can see that being wrong is if a situation can be engineered where it's an existential choice between continuing with Brexit or rejoining the EU. And given that is seems Johnson is clearly prepared to smoke the Union and GFA in pursuit of Brexit, it's clear that won't work.

Of much more use would be a strategy for trying to get back to 2015 in (say) 2045. I'll probably be dead by then, as will DW. So it would be nice to start now.

Brexit wasn't achieved by Farage carefully curating facts to bolster his argument, so it's curious why some people feel that's the way to reverse it.

Why do you care so much about a [PhD] student in Sweden?

I'm interested because he published his story and I'm a bit bored during our quasi lockdown. I also noticed that he had copied in, or retweeted Lord Adonis, the European Movement etc. Now he has retweeted Jeremy Corbyn - does he know that JC is a closet Leaver? Grin

Why do you not care that the UK has chosen to allow unchecked imports of goodness knows what into the country?

How many dodgy traders are there in the European Union?

Peregrina
they should be embracing the Brexit opportunities

Indeed;
The National Farmers Union Scotland ended its annual conference -conducted online this year- in upbeat mood about the opportunities ahead.
“We could bemoan the fact that we have left Europe, or we can look for the opportunities for the global country we have now become. Stepping away from half a century under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) allows us to move to a smarter way of delivering for our industry, supporting the environment, biodiversity, climate change, and delivering our high standards of food production.”

Kendodd
I expect Clavinova will be back in a bit with a link proving that the fishing industry, thanks to Brexit, has gone from being on the bones of its arse to them all having more money than Pablo Escobar.

Funny you should say that - I recognised the name of the fishing trawler in this blog, the Kirkella - 17 March;

A great deal with Norway is on the table – the UK must grab it with both hands. ...
There is a smart deal waiting to be struck and we can now see the prize.

ukfisheries.net/media-centre/a-great-deal-with-norway-is-on-the-table-the-uk-must-grab-it-with-both-hands/?msg_pos=1

It was all doom and gloom for the Kirkella back in January;

We have to forget about Brexit because that has been accomplished. What we now have to hope for and work towards is a more productive relationship with countries which however much the right wing detest it, are still our neighbours. So less of this tosh about trying to join the trans Pacific Partnership because that's where it's all about to happen. Although I suspect that part of this is more to do with the leading countries i.e. Australia and New Zealand being white Commonwealth, and if the USA can be persuaded to join, it's back to predominantly being the Anglo-sphere.

And yes, it's all designed to show China that we are a force - but if that were the case we would interfere to stop what they are doing in Hong Kong and with the Uighars - and we haven't been able to.

Has anyone posted a link to the Clown-King article yet?

Photo of Boris Johnson at the JCB headquarters in the article. JCB had some good news last week;

JCB is creating hundreds of new jobs at its UK factories as demand for construction equipment continues to soar.

The line towards banana republic is becoming asymptotic ...

www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1412853/Boris-Johnson-Union-Jack-flown-permission-EU-flag-public-buildings

THE Union Jack is set to be flown from every Government building in the UK every day of the year under a new scheme to celebrate Britain's heritage and pride, with planning permission needed to fly the EU flag.

DGRossetti · 21/03/2021 17:48

Two flags, one pole

Tory party policy it seems.

They’re worried, aren’t they?

I am disgusted at the deafeatism of the assumptions about political parties
who should be fighting tooth and nail

  • for the environment
  • for the rights of citizens
  • for business
  • all ow work and study abroad
  • for stress free travel

Brexit is done
but that DOES NOT MEAN we have to accept the shower of shit that is the Frost version

Johnson is from the cohort that learns debating and rhetoric at school and uni.
He does not care what he says so long as the person in front of him is nodding.

I might be wrong but I never clocked the teaching of persuasive speech or writing in school being required to contain any element of unbiased truth or fact. It appeared to focus on cherry picking evidence to support one’s point of view, and to use all sorts of language tricks to emphasise that. Many of my sixth formers consequently found writing straightforward reports quite difficult. In the end I had to ban all punctuation apart from full stops and the occasional comma, and entirely prohibit adjectives.

Peregrina · 21/03/2021 19:19

Just read a comment on the Guardian article about the vaccine debacle: the person now regrets their Remain vote. The question was legitimately asked, Why since we are now living with Brexit?

I hope you banned exclamation marks. Too often they ruin what is a trivial point! As thought it's the most world shattering observation!

Because (like the boast of "having had Covid" a year ago) it sounds good.
yellowspanner · 21/03/2021 23:02

Why do some of you have a problem with flying our country's flag on our government buildings?
I'm genuinely puzzled.

Think deeper.

Peregrina · 22/03/2021 07:35

Government buildings in my experience, having worked in many, quite often flew the flag - but it would be for special occasions. Flying it everyday just rather devalues the symbolism - but that is what Dictator Johnson wants to do. Their press briefings already look a bit stupid with 4 flags on display, where one would be perfectly adequate. Will we mandate them in each classroom next, and have a pledge of allegiance?

I would assume that his writ won't run in Scotland either, which would be just as well because flying the Union Jack there is only likely to further the Nationalist cause.

pointythings · 22/03/2021 07:43

Flags should be for special occasions and sports. Daily use on government building is nationalist willy waving. The US has a flag fetish, but if you travel round Europe, you won't see a lot of flags. Because these countries don't suffer from insecurity and small man syndrome.
