RedToothBrush · 24/01/2021 14:46

The government is advising people to move their businesses to the EU to avoid UK taxation and red tape.

Why would you do this?

For the interests of the uk?

Or is it about power WITHIN the uk?

LQ - I am so sorry to hear about your parent. I had a friend in a similar situation a few weeks ago - and it was awful

SwedishEdith · 29/01/2021 21:31

Made me laugh on Twitter

'Big twist is going to be Brendan O'Neill defending the EU Commission.'

The BeLeavers are absolutely wetting themselves with excitement over on other threads about the EU cocking up. If they really have and it's to the detriment of Ireland then I suspect that Biden would weigh in and tell them to get their act together. I don't think somehow that he's going to come down on the side of Johnson.

But poor NI - what on earth did they do to earn the shit show which has been wished upon them.

LouiseCollins28 · 29/01/2021 21:48

Peregrina - well I think the DUP have done quite a lot....

RedToothBrush · 29/01/2021 21:53

On twitter Brits are losing their shit and the French ... haven't noticed that anything is going on.

The Irish noticed...

Philip Ryan @philip_ryan
A government source said article 16 may have been inadvertently triggered by “someone who did not understand the political implications” of the decision.

Taoiseach contacts EU over plans to block vaccine supply to Northern Ireland

Philip Ryan @philip_ryan
The Taoiseach has spoken to Prime Minister Boris Johnson about the EU decision to introduce controls on vaccines entering Northern Ireland.

Article 16 of the Northern Ireland protocol will NOT be triggered and EU sources say decision to do so was an "oversight".

Let me translate.

Some dickheads in EU HQ decided to trigger article 16. They did so. Then shit hit the fan cos they Irish phoned up and went 'what the actual fuck are you doing? Have you forgotten... well politics and shared land border you absolute flaming muppets'.

EU go errrr oh fuck yes about that, do you think anyone will notice if we just pretend we didn't invoke article 16 and it was all a figment of your imagination and the british media inaccurately reporting it, in a 'these are not the droids you are looking for moment'.

I really think this is the reality and the scale of fucking up theyve just made.

There is utter panic in EU HQ atm. They are all running around like headless chickens going "how the fuck do we make sure we have enough vaccine to see off a major incident and all these governments going absolutely batshit at us because we've stuff up on such an enormous scale'.

Can any help me spell exestantial crisis without me having to resort to google to spell check?

I mean... I know people are dying and everything, but why should they be our priority when we can make it all about nationalism?

TokyoSushi · 29/01/2021 21:54

Twitter seems to think that the EU are retreating and not triggering article 16, statement due shortly, apparently... 👀

RedToothBrush · 29/01/2021 21:55

But yeah i doubt if many people in France, Germany etc even blinked over this.

But Irish eyes certainly did and were not smiling.

There needs to be a big apology from Von de Leyen.
What a fuck up.

RedToothBrush · 29/01/2021 21:59

Fwiw im not convinced whats just happened would have happened on Donald Tusk's watch. He was shit hot on the border issue.

Attheendofthedays · 29/01/2021 22:02

I wonder why Tony and RTE posted this in the news earlier then about the Irish Government not being informed?
if it's all been a mix up then we need to ask why the EU have left a numpty in charge who had the authority to trigger article 16, nearly starting a national disaster.
You'd nearly think they don't talk to each other.

This is an unbelievable mess.

The Commission have united Sinn Fein, the DUP, the SDLP, the 🇬🇧 Government, the 🇮🇪 Government all on the same side. Four years of Brexit negotiations and 21 years of the Good Friday Agreement all blown to pieces, a fuse lit under the Irish border, and completely wrecking any chance of Britain ever rejoining the EU, all due to the stroke of a bureaucrat’s pen in Brussels.

What the fuck do they think they are doing?

The words 'condemned by Sinn Fein' says it all.
Violetparis · 29/01/2021 22:09

And Macron rubbishing the AZ vaccine just tops the shambles off.

RedToothBrush · 29/01/2021 22:11

Its one pretty fucking big plot twist thats for sure.

Also:
www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/blog/eu-vaccine-debate
EU vaccine debate highlights UK success – and need for diplomacy

It contains the following crucial paragraph:
However, journalists who have pieced together leaked documents and data think, even though the government has less vaccine than it expected, it has enough – just about – to hit its mid-February target

I've been saying this but i think we could be a week or two behind schedule but nothing disastrous.

It puts uk policy making largely on track.

If we do have vaccine supply issues the sticky bit will be March / April. We nedd to bridge that and we should be ok.

Meanwhile the EU is looking at somehow having to bridge more like until June.

Thats huge. Imagine a similar political situation in the UK and what lengths the government would be going to on that.

Also, in that context, the Republic of Ireland siding with the UK has political relevance. Realistically the UK could start helping Ireland at the end of April because its actually in the national interest to do so in several ways....

But yeah.

Fucking hell.

Fantastic! It is completely outrageous that OUR government is advising people to avoid UK taxes. But since they are all at it themselves, not surprising.
TatianaBis · 29/01/2021 22:13

It’s like Brexit version of the Tangier Incident.

Peregrina · 29/01/2021 22:16

I would be very surprised if our Government and press are reporting accurately. Why start now after four and a half years.

bellinisurge · 29/01/2021 22:18

Let's hope the Taoiseach will "mention" it to Biden next time he has a chat - US/Ireland currently talking about whether the Taoiseach should go for St Patrick's day as usual.

Mistigri · 29/01/2021 22:20

And Macron rubbishing the AZ vaccine just tops the shambles off.

Do you have a link to the clip or a French source? I've only seen English journos reporting this - which given their track record makes me a bit suspicious.
