The 'smooth' exit from transition now leads to a million and one little things that you can't get hold of or took completely for granted.

Why is sainsbury in NI selling spa milk? Why can't you get hold of your favourite food stuff?

Its a slow strangulation of the country.

In which you get to learn all about the merits of the EU and what a donkey Johnson really is.

Kate Hoey, woman who set fire to the house, fanned the flames, added accelerant, can’t believe it burnt down.

Justice is better served cold because if its warm then its justwater

She'd like to believe that the Prime Minister didn't understand that what he agreed in 2019 was a betrayal of NI's place in the UK... She can believe what she likes, but the facts speak for themselves. Or... we'd really like the facts to speak for themselves

However, what we see is how little facts play any sort of place at all in today's politics. For Tories or Republicans Putin, Orban or any far right politician's... etc. I wonder if this will be a disadvantage for Starmer who still believes that facts and evidence matter?

Because the media will force him to account for every fucking bean. Look how Corbyn was grilled. Meanwhile no one has any idea how much the tories have spaffed these past 13 months. No one. But that's OK. They're Tories. Who have a complaint media onside (much as in the US) to convince the country that Tories are the natural party of power and anything else must be an aberration in nature that must be corrected (sound familiar ?).

About half of the posters Bill Philpot creates and sells from his Suffolk-based studio are sold to customers in Europe.

His very first sale after the new post-Brexit rules came into effect was from a customer in France.

But that customer was far from amused. On top of the £80 cost of the poster, says Mr Philpot, the customer had to pay a further €34 (£30) made up of French tax, a brokerage charge from delivery firm UPS (to expedite it through customs), and the new EU sales tax.

(contd)

Oh Jesus wept some more.

Our fish are now happier because they're British...

Peregrina · 14/01/2021 15:27

I imagine that the fish could be happier. Safe from the fishermen's nets because there is no point in catching them if they can't be sold.

Ironically you can't take a ham sandwich into the EU anymore, but there aren't any restrictions on fish.

It's almost as if they are trolling us. Or trawling us, even.

I'll get my coat.

Long queues at Ashford Brexit lorry park as truckers wait for paperwork to be cleared

Truckers have been left queuing for hours at a new Brexit lorry park as they wait for border paperwork to be cleared.

Transport chiefs say a photo showing a long line of hauliers at the Waterbrook Park facility in Ashford proves the government "isn't fully prepared" for disruption in Kent

The site - which is set to be used until the end of February - opened on January 1 and has been getting busier in recent days at the end of the Christmas lull.

HMRC is currently carrying out customs checks on the plot while construction continues on a neighbouring 66-acre facility.

On Twitter, Rod McKenzie, director of policy and public affairs at the Road Haulage Association (RHA), said drivers had been queuing for up to eight hours yesterday to get their border paperwork signed off, describing the situation as "shocking".

and

In a statement, HMRC said it has set up five inland border facilities across the country - Waterbrook, Ebbsfleet, North Weald (Essex), Birmingham Airport and Warrington.

It says hauliers may choose to visit whichever site is most convenient for them.

A spokesman added: "Drivers are encouraged to pre-book their space at an inland border facility by using our online service, which will allow them to see how busy each site is in advance so that they can avoid delays.

"With a majority of drivers using Ashford Waterbrook, this has led to longer waiting times and we have advised drivers to expect delays.

“Current site data has shown the average wait time is 65 minutes.

"However, any driver concerned about the wait time may choose to visit an alternative location.”

Just a point:
Waterbrook(Kent)
Ebbsfleet (Kent)
North Weald (Essex)
Birmingham (A Bit Further North)
Warrington (Even Further North)

What % of goods originate from and have a destination in the South East and go via the Tunnel?

How much use are Birmingham and Warrington to these drivers?

(Mind you if you have an 8hour wait for paperwork, maybe Warrington isn't the worst call...)

No problem Red - if you have Raab's sense of geography.

ListeningQuietly · 14/01/2021 15:35

65 minutes sounds pretty efficient to me

even back in the day, getting a T2 / C88 done was rarely under 20 minutes for a full load
and more than that for a groupage

it all depends on how many people are doing the forms
and how experienced they are
and how they are handling the topping and tailing of returns

ListeningQuietly · 14/01/2021 15:41

The comments on the Kentonline article are interesting .....
clearly quite a few people who know what they are talking about.

I wonder how many opt for "none" ?

RedToothBrush · 14/01/2021 15:45

There are warning in the comments that the Fishermen are considering dumping their rotting fish outside Downing Street to make a point about how good the deal is.

I REALLY REALLY hope they do this.

I still do not get the "Inland Border facility" thing.

The Essex / Vietnamese people smuggling case showed beyond any doubt that drivers are able to tamper with the seals on lorries
so that goods can be added and removed from sealed lorries.

If a driver clears customs away from the border
only an idiot or a Tory minister will believe that 100% of them will not be willing to add / remove items between clearance and transit

ESPECIALLY when there is VAT and duty at stake

Quick covid divert... All those who say that the vulnerable should essentially be sacrificial lambs to the economy...

BBC article outlining timeline for vaccine containing figures of how many people are in each group.

Personally I'm in the 16-64 with underlying health conditions (you know, the ones that were going to die anyway so noone cares, even though most aren't life limiting). Along with 8.5m other people.

I still do not get the "Inland Border facility" thing.

If you wanted to hide the effects of Brexit from a largely ignorant public, how would you go about it. Bearing in mind large queues at ports are very hard to hide - especially in Tory Kent.

Much better to shift the problem well out of sight.

One thing that strikes me when administrations start going all gung-ho over international treaties (GFA and WTO in this case) it suggests that those at the top don't plan on being around into the consequences of their actions ...

'ON THE TABLE' Bombshell warning to Boris Johnson: lift lockdown soon or face leadership threat

BORIS Johnson’s days in Downing Street are numbered unless he gives a clear path out of lockdown soon, influential Tories have warned.

Powerful backbencher Steve Baker, who was instrumental in the downfall of Theresa May, has privately said “its inevitable the Prime Minister’s leadership will be on the table.”

In an explosive rallying call to fellow members of the lockdown-sceptic Covid Recovery Group, the ex-minister blasts: “people are telling me they are losing faith in our Conservative Party leadership.”

The group represents dozens of Tory backbenchers who a worried about the side effects of long lockdowns.

Mr Baker urges those colleagues to make their concerns directly to Mr Johnson’s Commons enforcer, Chief Whip Mark Spencer.

It was Chief Whip Mark Spencer together with Gavin Williamson who opposed Gove pre Christmas - they didn't want T4 everywhere and they didn't want schools closing. They won. And look how well thats working out. Its my suspicion that its their influence as to why primary schools opened for one day, before it became apparent how much of a car crash the decision to allow Christmas Bubbles had been.

There's been too much rumbling on which has screamed internal party row...

Harry Cole @MrHarryCole
Adds: “People are telling me they are losing faith in our Conservative Party leadership because they are not standing up for our values as a party."

Which values would these be?

I'm a little confused.

It can't be business and the economy, cos brexit red tape.

What 'values' do the Conservatives still have?

RTB
Johnson is an arse
but only an idiot would want his job at the moment.

The snip snip snip of Brexit will become clearer as the days get longer
and the lockdowns ease across the world

I had to go into the centre of the city today to collect an online order ...
more shops clearly been emptied of fittings - will not re open in the spring

Landlords will not get paid (and they are our pension savings)
Jobs lost
Suppliers unpaid
and how much of the stock that "non essential" retailers rushed in during December is still worth what they hoped to sell it for (clothes and fripperies in particular)
