Brexit

What have we gained by Brexit/leaving the EU?

Elephant4 · 29/12/2020 18:39

In simple terms.

I've read so much about what we've lost.

Please no sarcastic comments. I just want to know what we've gained - probably best if those who think Brexit is a positive thing post.

Do you have another username that is pro EU and forgot to change?

I've heard of sock puppets that agree with the same poster before, but never known a sock puppet set up for the specific purposes of disagreeing. Confused

Peregrina · 04/01/2021 16:27

That was weird behaviour, I wonder who the culprit was?

Mistigri · 04/01/2021 16:44

Is it even possible to use the same name as another user? Very odd.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 04/01/2021 16:45

Yeah

Usually if you change letters

So capital i looks like a lower case L

The second character in the fake account was the digit one if you hover over a name it appears in Courier New and then its clear ...
Peregrina · 04/01/2021 16:50

Shame it wasn't 1st April. It fooled us all including Clavinova.

AuldAlliance · 04/01/2021 16:57

Why?? Some people have a lot of time on their hands.

(I appreciate the irony of writing that on MN...)

Tanith · 04/01/2021 16:58

Someone did this a while ago with a number of accounts, changing the odd letter or number, then posting messages that in complete opposition to the account holder's usual opinion.
It's a popular pass time with the kids on Twitter, I believe.

I don't think anyone has hacked your account, Clavinova, but MNHQ should be able to sort it out.

Tanith · 04/01/2021 17:02

Ah! You've already worked it out! I shall crawl back into my hole, then Smile

Clavinova · 04/01/2021 17:25

Just to update - MNHQ have asked the mystery poster not to use the name again. HQ were perplexed as well but confirm my account has not been compromised.

ListeningQuietly · 04/01/2021 18:10

Clav
Glad you sorted it.
And now we all know to hover over a name if somebody starts posting massively out of character Smile

Peregrina · 04/01/2021 18:35

Pity, I was hoping for a Damascene conversion.

DoubleTweenQueen · 04/01/2021 20:36

@Peregrina Plenty of time for that ;)

www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-9120623/Think-Britain-vaccine-problems-EU-writes-ALEXANDER-VON-SCHOENBURG.html
The editor of Germany's biggest-selling newspaper (albeit a right-wing tabloid) is not impressed with the EU's vaccination programme and says:
"Anyone who still doubts the wisdom of Brexit needs only to look at the vaccine chaos unfolding across the Channel - and think again".
An advantage to leaving the EU?

"Anyone who still doubts the wisdom of Brexit needs only to look at the vaccine chaos unfolding across the Channel - and think again"

I don't think that holds up to scrutiny.
Denmark, despite only receiving vaccine over xmas, has done in % terms almost as many people as the UK.
Nation states messing up or doing very well, isn't an EU issue.
Plus the mechanisms we used to procure and approve vaccine were open to all in EU.

FuriousWithTheNHS · 07/01/2021 10:12

I think it completely holds up to scrutiny actually.

Trizzledizzle · 07/01/2021 10:35

@jasjas1973
Not a brexiteer but this is a EU issue as it's the EU that's in charge of procuring enough vaccine for its member states not the individual member countries and they've not done a good job with this at all. Their procurement has been sluggish and hampered by the 27 member states haggling over their allocations etc.

The Danish data looks good but they don't have a central data base for their vaccine data so they are some concerns in Denmark itself as to how accurate this no is. Plus Denmark is about 6 times smaller than the UK in terms of geographical size and had 60 million less residents so it had been able to take a very different approach in its vaccination programme mainly based around mobile units going to the populated areas.

DoubleTweenQueen · 07/01/2021 13:15

The EU decided to work together to ensure no country got left behind. It was a conscious decision for unity against Covid. The UK could have pursued this same path while we were still a member state. Not a Brexit issue.

DoubleTweenQueen · 07/01/2021 13:16

I mean the UK were able to go it alone as a member state, as could any member state.

jasjas1973 · 07/01/2021 19:14

@Trizzledizzle

As i understand it, the EU procurement has been reasonable, they've ordered more than enough vaccine for all the people in the EU.
its the member states that have done very badly in getting it in peoples arms, the vaccination rate in France is terrible.

Take your point on Denmark but the fact is they have rolled it out better than most EU countries, v surprised at Germany.

FuriousWithTheNHS · 10/01/2021 17:53

I'll just leave this here...

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/14/coronavirus-vaccine-delays-brexit-ema-expensive

DoubleTweenQueen · 10/01/2021 18:09

That article is nine months old. Try more recent sources - the BMJ is quite good

FuriousWithTheNHS · 10/01/2021 18:16

I know it's nine months old. That's my whole point. Typical Guardian anti-Brexit doom-mongering by so called experts which turned out to be completely, spectacularly wrong.

DoubleTweenQueen · 10/01/2021 22:39

Nine months ago, the writer of the article did not predict the UK Gvnmt would take it's own route to emergency temporary approval of use of the Pfizer - BioNTech vaccine through MHRA - a step available to any EU state. The basis of the article is that we will likely not have access to new drugs, as a separate market, as quickly as the EU. That is still likely to be the case, unless developed solely in the UK

DoubleTweenQueen · 10/01/2021 22:43

Perhaps you should take your blinkers off and do a bit of reading around the subject, if you're interested? Bit desperate if you're relying on contradicting a nine month old article to underpin Brexit. It's still an absolute crock. Any other possible upsides I've missed?
