Brexit

What have we gained by Brexit/leaving the EU?

In simple terms.

I've read so much about what we've lost.

Please no sarcastic comments. I just want to know what we've gained - probably best if those who think Brexit is a positive thing post.

According to Michael Gove it does. It then begs the question, if red tape is so good for boosting business, why not introduce it for all domestic sales as well?

It will take at least 18 months for the UK economy to return to its pre-pandemic size and its recovery will lag behind that of its peers, according to a poll of more than 90 leading economists....

...many respondents said the UK recovery would be held back this year and longer-term by a lasting rise in unemployment, weak business investment and the creeping after-effects of Brexit.

Swati Dhingra, associate professor at the London School of Economics, predicted “an initial optimistic uptick from a Brexit deal and then a longer period over which reduced market access starts to come into play”. Hande Kucuk, at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, said the end of the transition period would “broaden” the economic shock, as it would hit sectors less affected by Covid-19.

“The Covid-19 vaccine(s) will prove a shot in the arm for both the UK economy and its peers. But Brexit will be a shot in the foot,” said John Philpott, an independent consultant.

I would say for me, it's not just about economics, but the smaller personal impacts that will gradually come to light also.

I'm reporting this post - it wasn't me who posted. I haven't even seen the article before so not a mistake. Weird. ?????

Peregrina · 04/01/2021 13:06

I must say, it didn't seem like the usual 'the EU is all bad' post from Clavinova. I did wonder if there was a Damascene conversion, but it seems not.

Peregrina · 04/01/2021 13:14

But despite that, the article was worth reading, so why delete the post?

Chersfrozenface · 04/01/2021 13:19

Because it suggests Brexit will be less than a resounding success and doesn't say that the EU and every state in it does everything worse than the marvellous UK?

You have no objections if I change my username to Peregrina then?

Do you have another username that is pro EU and forgot to change?
Peregrina · 04/01/2021 13:25

By all means and I would immediately report you for breaking the rules. However, even if you get the post deleted, there is nothing to stop someone else putting the FT link up. It's not breaking any MN rules as far as I can see.

Peregrina · 04/01/2021 13:28

So Clavinova is really Boris Johnson in disguise, providing both sides of the argument? Who would have thought that?

We did have that Big Name Change event when MN accounts got hacked. I still occasionally find posts under an old name.

I'm not bothered by the FT link - I'm bothered that someone else is posting under my username of course.

Clavinova · 04/01/2021 13:31

No - just the one username - I've never changed it.

Clavinova · 04/01/2021 13:37

If I copy and paste the 'fake' Clavinova into advanced search only one post appears so I can check to see if they post again.

Peregrina · 04/01/2021 13:45

To be fair, I do think that MN need to sort this out - otherwise there would be a total free for all. I assume that MN could find out who it really was, and well, rap their knuckles if not ban them.

ListeningQuietly · 04/01/2021 13:48

If you hover over the fake Clav account its easy to see what they have done
and yes, it would be worth you taking it up with HQ as that is not cricket.

Clavinova · 04/01/2021 14:03

Yes, I see now! MN HQ are on the case - thankfully they have confirmed that the message was not sent from my account.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 04/01/2021 14:22

The time to think about that was before you voted to leave. No wonder the country is in such a mess.

Odd thing to do. Perhaps you could find the (long) list of economists who thought Labour's Election Manifesto was fully-costed as well. Grin

The Tories have borrowed billions more than even Labour pledged, so it was possible to achieve.
Peregrina · 04/01/2021 15:02

Not only that, some of Labour's ideas don't seem all that stupid now. Roll out fast broadband nationally for a starter. It depended what they meant by free, which wasn't clear to me.

Mistigri · 04/01/2021 15:03

More U.K. passport holders with Swedish residency hitting the Brexit jackpot.

Peregrina · 04/01/2021 15:11

There will need to be a mechanism for those who had their passport stamped erroneously to get the stamp cancelled. I cannot see the UK Government troubling itself about this. It does not bode well.

Then Brexiters wonder why we are not 'getting behind Brexit'.
